<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

the Company known as: N.¯1 [.PHI1IP8 'GLOLTLAJIPiLE'AB1T v ".V Device comprising a system of electrodes.
The invention relates to a device comprising a system of electrodes, including an emitting electrode from which electrons exit under the effect of an electric field; This is understood to mean an electrode which consists of at least one conductive base layer and a very thin insulating layer and in which this insulating layer is subjected to a high intensity field, when a certain potential difference is applied between this electrode and another conductive electrode (suction electrode). This electrode therefore emits electrons in the cold state.
An example of such an electrode is described by Walter in "Physical Reviwe 1936", 49 p. 478. The electrode specified therein is not used as a primary cathode, but as a secondary cathode. An electrode such as envisaged here can be of very variable constitution, but it must always include a thin insulating layer, subjected to a field of very high intensity.
The current emitted by an electrode thus formed cannot be modulated in the usual way by placing a negative grid in front of this electrode, because, as a result of the. high speed of output of electrons (30-50 volts), it does not occur, as in normal cathodes, a space charge.
However, a variation in the voltage in the plane of the suction electrode allows a small variation in the intensity of the electronic current to be obtained.
Tests have shown that it is possible to modulate with a greater slope, when using a device according to the present invention, which comprises a cathode emitting under the effect of an electric field, as well as several grids and an anode, the role of control grid being performed by the second grid counted from the cathode towards the anode, or by a grid closer to the anode, while the cathode side of the control grid is find a grid to which a positive voltage is applied with respect to the cathode.
It can be seen that, for a determined voltage range of the control gate of a device according to the invention, the anode current-voltage characteristic of this control gate is negative, that is to say that an increase of the gate voltage causes a decrease in the intensity of the anode current, and vice versa.
It is not impossible that this results from the fact that the electrons return in front of the grid and release on the n

insulating layer of the emitting electrode positive places, so that the emission of the cathode increases as the gate voltage decreases. From the energy point of view, this can be explained by the fact that, due to the special construction form of the cathode, when they leave the insulating layer, the electrons have a speed greater than 0 volts; speed can be 30 to 50 volts for example. As these electrons return to the layer at the same speed, they are able to free up positive places.
According to a particular embodiment of the present invention, it is the second grid, counted from the cathode towards the anode, which acts as the control grid and the first grid which is brought to a positive potential. This potential is between 150 and 250 volts for example. It is, however, very possible that the control grid constitutes one of the following grids and, in this case, it is a previous grid which is brought to a positive potential; It should be noted that the grids can be wound up in an arbitrary manner and that the best solution is to wind these grids so that their turns are not located one behind the other.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course being part of said invention.
In the drawing, 1 is a nickel wire, which acts as the conductive core of the cathode; it is covered with an insulating layer 2 a few microns thick, for example of magnesium oxide, lined with a layer of highly emitting material 3, for example of calcium oxide. The cathode thus constituted is surrounded by two grids 4 and 5, and an anode 6. At the grid 4, a direct voltage of 200 volts is applied; grid 5 acts as a control grid and the anode is brought to a potential of 250 volts.
