<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF PATENT OF INVENTION the Company known as: N.V. PHILIPS'GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN Filling mass for recuperators, consisting of one or more sections of wire.
The bulk of the recuperators' fill is frequently made up of one or more wafers or spools of wire. This embodiment requires certain precautions to obtain the required ratio between the heat absorbing surface and the gas passage opening. In the known embodiments, the coils are wound on a support which must remain in the mass to maintain the required spacing between the turns. Crossed wire spools have also been used; the presence of the support is then superfluous, but their manufacture is more complicated than that of cylindrical coils.
According to the invention, the wire required to constitute the filling mass of the recuperator is at least partially deformed and the pitch of this deformation is at most equal to 100 times the average thickness of the wire. This pitch does not have to be constant over the entire deformed length, but it should always be less than the value specified above.
After the assembly of several deformed son, due to the shape of each section there remains between the son sufficient space to allow the passage of gases. To achieve this result, the wire does not necessarily have to be deformed over its entire length. The deformed wire sections can alternate with deformation parts of larger pitch, or even with non-deformed parts. In all these cases, as a result of the deformation, a determined part of the wire is only locally in contact with the neighboring part of the wire or with the neighboring turn of the same wire.
The aforementioned deformation will preferably have a periodic character, which can be carried out in a rolling mill or in a hammering machine. Undeformed sections are obtained by temporarily shutting down the rolling mill or the hammer.
As the step of the deformation is at most equal to 100 times the thickness of the wire, the latter will be sufficiently rigid to maintain the deformation after the assembly of the various sections. In the case of larger pitches, the deformations could be altered during the assembly of the wire, so that the various sections would come into contact over a greater length, which could obstruct the passage of gases.
The various sections can be assembled in several ways, since the shape of each of the sections constitutes a sufficient guarantee of a judicious distribution of the openings.

the one that gives up heat. This is how the wire sections can be wound into cylindrical coils which fill either directly, or a.nrès l.eur sectioning into wafers, the recovery chamber. It is also possible to assemble the sections of wire into bundles and the filling of the recovery chamber then consists of one or more of these bundles.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the wire is deformed in a zigzag fashion. This deformation can be carried out immediately.

Not
EMI2.11
of the deformation is "'u oÜmum ëg" L to ¯L) 0 times the diameter of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
wire, and the height of the deformation is of the same order of magnitude or smaller. Below this limit, the deformation of the wire remains during subsequent handling, for example during winding in coils. As a result, in the coil wound with the aid of a wire as shown in FIG. 2, the neighboring turns keep their zigzag shape. The neighboring turns will therefore only be in contact locally, namely at the vertices of the zigzag line. In general, the free space between two neighboring wires is sufficient for the passage of gases, and the four sides of each opening are formed by wire.
To avoid accidentally two neighboring wires being arranged so that the zigzag parts match each other, which would reduce the passage offered to the gases to a minimum, it is possible to make the pitch of the zigzag line variable between the most large and smallest value which must always be less than the imposed limit of 100 times the diameter of the wire. Apart from fortuitous cases, two neighboring wires will touch each other on parts with deformation of different pitches, so that they will not be in contact over a very long length. The figure shows a second wire 23, placed next to the first wire 20.
In general, the conditions for a uniform distribution of the passage openings between the wires are imposed for only one direction, namely that of the gas flow, so that it will suffice to deform the wire in a single plane. In this case, when winding the coil of the recuperator, care must be taken that the plane of the deformation of the wire is perpendicular to the direction of the gas flow. To make this precaution superfluous or to manufacture recuperators intended for various directions of circulation, the wire can be deformed from the strip shown in FIG. 3. The wire 25 is of round section and is deformed in a zigzag way.
The plane of this deformation, however, rotates around the axis 28 of the deformed wire so that from the position indicated by 26, the zigzag line gradually assumes a position perpendicular to its initial position and then returns to the latter. This deformation can be obtained by twisting the folded zigzag wire around its longitudinal axis. It can possibly be combined with a variation, periodic or not, of the size of the step.
The wire shapes mentioned can be obtained by passing, before winding the coil, a round wire, drawn to the required diameter, between two serrated cylinders. These cylinders can be found on the winder used for the manufacture of the recuperator spool, which allows the deformation of the wire and its winding in a single operation. The step variation shown in FIG. 2 is obtained by using cylinders with variable pitch serration. The variation in pitch thus obtained has a periodic character: in fact, after a complete whole of the serrated cylinders, the variation returns.
The twist of the wire after the zigzag deformation, as shown in fig. 3 is obtained by rotating either the supply coil and the serrated cylinders, or the coil of the recuperator in a plane perpendicular to the winding direction.
In general, wire with a diameter of 50 microns is used. The pitch of wire deformation is 0.5mm, or it varies between 0.2 and 0.5mm
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the wire is composed of a series of flattened parts, offset by 90. Such a wire can be obtained by hammering a round wire. The width 30 of each plate is 0.5 mm, the thickness 31 is 0.1 mm. This wire is obtained by starting from a round wire of 0.25 mm in diameter. The total pitch 32 of the deformation is approximately 10 mm.

Fig. 10 shows a deformed wire, composed of a round wire 36 of 0.5 mm in diameter, wound in a helix. The diameter 7 of the wound wire is 10 mm. men pitch 38 is 4 mm. Filling masses produced using such a wire are particularly elastic. After its winding, the spool 11 is held rigidly by means of ties, for example of a paper tape, so that all the threads are more or less compressed. After the plan in the recovery chamber 14, the paper tape is removed, for example by burning it, so
