<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of an application for a PATENT OF INVENTION "Improvements in the execution of the bottom of packaging, preferably of the type bags, sachets and the like".
The invention relates to packaging and preferably to packaging of the type bags, sachets and more particularly to such packaging in which the bottom is obtained by a double folding of one of the ends of the starting cuff.
By double folding we must understand here two successive folds of the same end of the cuff. so that such a superposition of paper material is obtained that not only is the square shape of the bottom of the packaging produced, but also that in plan all the openings are covered by solid parts.
The object of the invention is to allow the manufacture of such square-bottomed packaging by hand, without having to use an excessive amount of paper. On the other hand, by the application of the improvements, object of the invention, one obviates, in-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is convenient to have to produce the so-called "reinforced" bases and which are generally produced by the subsequent application of a label of relatively large dimensions which covers the largest surface of the base.
This means is at the same time expensive, slow and, if it really increases the resistance of the bottom, it cannot ensure the total tightness of the said bottom, The use of such reinforced bases due to the relatively large dimensions of the labels added after the execution of the base entails the need to have to use a relatively large quantity of glue, the excess of which occluded between the base and the label subsequently gives rise to a development of mold which is particularly detrimental when it spreads organic matter, in particular food products introduced into such packaging.
The object of the invention is also to systematically eliminate this serious drawback while at the same time introducing a means which ensures practically perfect sealing of the bottom of the packaging.
Generally, the bottoms are made by a first folding shown schematically in Figure 1 attached, so that one achieves a deformation of one of the ends of the cuff 1 such that the opening 2 is brought back to the diagnnale d 'a lozenge-shaped surplice 3, one of the vertices of which is extended by a covering tab 4, By the second folding shown schematically in FIG. 3, two vertices of the lozenge are brought together so that the separation of the diagonal 2 is covered by solid parts. However, this covering does not suddenly determine a total tightness of the bottom closure, given the very formation of the latter and the bonding technique.
For various reasons, the main one of which is to avoid suddenly gluing several bags during high-volume mechanical production, the adhesive material can only be applied to the folding elements intended to form the bottom, following two narrow bands 5.6 relatively / and located at a certain distance from the edges
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lengthwise of the diagonal opening ¯2, It will in fact be understood that it is in any case necessary to prevent the adhesive material from extending beyond said edges by subsequent crushing.
As a result, the bottom therefore only presents, as a surface of resistance against any stresses tending to deploy the folded elements forming the bottom, the zones 7,8 covered by the adhesive material. Under the weight of the packaged material, it frequently happens that detachments occur and that the packaging thus partially or totally perishes by the loosening of the bottom.
The present invention relates to an extremely simple means of definitively eliminating this drawback by making the sealing of the base practically independent of the usual bonding zones of the folded elements forming the base.
This simple and original means, shown schematically in the attached FIG. 2, consists substantially in joining the two adjacent edges of the diagonal opening 2 by a strip 9.- of suitable material - attached between the two successive folds.
According to an economical and expeditious application, this added strip can be produced by a strip of gummed paper, glued to the right of the diagonal along which the opening of the bottom is located after the first folding of the corresponding end of the starting cuff. By this means the closure, respectively the sealing of the bottom, immediately after the first folding, is ensured, so that the second folding - contrary to the usual practice - only has the sole function of completing the shape of the bottom to the bottom. 'exclusion of any impact on waterproofing.
Nevertheless, the second folding by the gluing zones that it requires increases in a way the efficiency of the prior gluing the stresses tending to separate the parts brought together by the successive folds being transferred to a much larger gluing surface than in the manufacturing processes. ordinary.
The tape added after first folding can be

paper, textile or any other suitable material.
It may extend over all or only part of the length of the diagonal of the bottom after first folding. The width of this reported band will be determined in proportion to the desired results,
The improvements which are the subject of the invention are applicable to all types of bags or sachets.
