 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 EMI1.1
 PATENT v 'i NY ià lOE T 1 0 lÎ "Heat exchanger, in particular air heater or wind heater" the Company known as: Société Anonyme BROWN, BOVEPI & Cie, in BADEN, Switzerland * Faiaant object of a first patent application filed in SWITZERLAND: December 28, 1943.

   It is known, for example in steeply sloping tube boilers, to mount the lower manifold in a fixed manner, but to suspend the upper manifold from springs, so that it can participate in the displacement resulting from the expansion of the tubes. * The manifolds of other heat exchangers, for example air heaters, have also already been suspended from springs or counterbalanced levers, to free the tubes from the weight of the manifold.

   A disadvantage of this construction consists in that a very large number of tubes must be controlled simultaneously by one and the same tensioning device, so that it can happen that all the tubes do not undergo the dreary expansion and that it is then precisely to the most strongly heated tubes that the purpose of the device is not achieved. In addition, the supply lines going to the collectors in question must also be made flexible when using the known spring suspensions.

   The object of the invention is to eliminate these drawbacks. It relates to a heat exchanger for gas, in particular an air heater or wind heater, whose tubes forming their heating surfaces open, at both ends, into collectors which are both fixedly mounted, and one of the ends of which is rigidly joined to the corresponding manifold, while the other end slidably passes through the bottom of the other manifold, the tubes being

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 tensioned by springs These springs can be loosened inside the corresponding collector; the connections to the manifold are, like the latter, fixedly mounted.

   Several tubes will advantageously be brought together in the form of a bundle, by providing them with a joint common to the collectors and common springs to keep them taut.

   As an example of execution of the invention, the accompanying drawing shows a wind heater. Its heating surfaces are formed by a large number of bundles of tubes 1, of which the lower end piece 2 is rigidly connected to the manifold 3, while the upper end piece 4 slidably traverses the bottom of the manifold. 5. By means of the springs 6 and the rods 7, the end pieces 4 are pulled through the sealing boxes at the base of the manifold and the tubes are kept taut, so that they remain straight, even when s'. they are heated strongly.

   The lower and upper manifolds 3.5 are rigidly joined to the lateral casing of the casing 8, so that the upper connecting pipes only have to follow the slight expansions of the casing wall 8, which remains relatively cold. The upper connection pipes are, on the one hand, the pipe 9 through which the cold wind enters and, on the other hand, the pipe 10 through which the heating gases exit. The wind circulates inside the tubes and leaves them through the end pieces 11 similar to diffusers. 12 designates the hot vent connection.

   The heating gases coming from the combustion chamber enter at 13 into the column of the wind heater.

   The partition wall between the heating gas column and the lower manifold 3 (hot end of the tubes) is formed by the hollow plate 14, to which the tube bundles are fixed by their end pieces 2. This plate can be provided with air cooling, for which the air enters 15. This same air can be used for cooling the internal reinforcement 16 of the end pieces. The cooling air exits at 17 and mixes with the combustion gases, the temperature of which must, otherwise, be artificially lowered in most cases, so as not to endanger the tubes.

   The upper closure of the column (cold end of the tuoes) is formed by the supports 18. In these are arranged the sockets 19, in which the end pieces 4 can slide. Since the wind pressure is usually higher than that of the gas heater, the gap fills with cooler air. However, it is also possible to use air-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 special shutter, for example when the pressure of the heating gas is greater than that of the wind.

   The construction method which has just been described proves to be particularly advantageous in air heaters or wind heaters of the Velox type. It is known that these are heat exchangers in which particularly high heat transmissions are achieved thanks to the high pressures and the high speeds of the heating gases, so that the heating surfaces and the passage sections heating gases become extremely small If the pressures of the heating gases are made approximately equal to the air or wind pressure, the tubes are practically not exposed to internal or external pressures,

   and there is also no significant pressure difference between the column of the heating gases and the manifolds, so that no appreciable losses occur due to the lack of tightness, even if there is a large clearance of the ends of the tubes at the places where the funds of the collectors cross.

   The individual suspension of tubes or bundles of tubes also allows individual or at least group assembly. After removing the cover 20 and releasing the springs 6 of a row of tubes, the supports 18 and 21 are removed, so that the desired tube bundle can be extracted.
