 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a request for
PATENT OF INVENTION Company known as: CORNERCROFT LIMITED and Norman RYCROFT.

  "improvements to adjustable floor lamps". Priority of British patent N 537 194 applied for February 24, 1940.

   This invention relates to floor lamps or adjustable upright of the spring type in which the lamp frame is mounted in an orientable manner at the free end of an arm which can itself pivot in an adjustable manner. , in the upper end of a foot or upright, the lower end of which is mounted in an orientable manner and by means of a pivot in a base.

   Swivel brackets are known which themselves contain a spring-actuated balancing mechanism by which the bracket, as a whole, can be automatically retained at any tilt within the scope of its adjustment, said bracket being constructed to maintain a stable position. artiole which he carries in a predetermined position with respect to the vertical.

   In an orientable telephone holder of this kind proposed so far there is a hinge or link connection between the instrument attached to the holder by means of a pivot and a fixed base to which the holder itself is connected. by means of a pivot, the position of the support around its pivot in the base being stabilized by means of a compression spring enclosed within the support and cooperating with said articulation connection, the arrangement being such that the instrument remains vertical whatever the position in which the support is 1116 .. around its pivot.

    @ The present invention differs from orientable supports of the kind described above in that it is intended to be applied to the feet or uprights of universally orientable lamps. Of the spring type in which the frame of the lamp is mounted in 'an orientable manner at the free end of an arm which pivots in the upper end of a post and is orientable with respect to this upper end independently while the lower end of this upright is mounted in an orientable manner and by means of a pivot in a base.,

The object of the present invention is to provide a considerably improved construction of a lamp of the kind mentioned herein. @
According to the invention. the orientable floor lamps of the type mentioned in this memorandum are characterized in that the relative positions of the upright and of the arm are stabilized by means of one or more springs common to both parts, one of the ends of the spring or each spring being connected

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 directly or indirectly to a member on which the upright is mounted by means of a pivot and the other end at the pivoting end of said arm so as to increase the friction at the pivot joints.

   In the attached drawings:
Figure 1 is a view, partially in section, of an orientable floor lamp embodying one form of the invention.

   Figure 2 is a sectional view of the part of the base taken along line a - a of Figure 1.

   Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the plinth.

   Figure 4 is a sectional view of a detail along line b - b of Figure 2.

   Figures 5 and 6 show adjustable floor lamps embodying other forms of construction of the invention.

   Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bulb holder on a larger scale.

   In all the drawings, like parts are designated by like reference notations.

   In each of the illustrated forms, the improved adjustable floor lamp comprises a base 2, a rotating member 3 which can rotate therein about a vertical axis, a tubular post 4 pivoting around said rotating member, and an arm. 5 mounted to pivot in the upper end of said upright and intended to carry an electric lamp at its free end.

   The base 2, which is of considerable weight and dimensions, has on its upper side a raised central part 2a which has a hollow at 2 to receive the rotating member 3. The latter can rotate in a conical bearing 3a. at the bottom of the hollow 2b around a vertical axis and is held there in its position by means of nuts 3b fitting a threaded rod 30 starting from the bottom of a conical part of said rotating member, and protruding into a hollow 8 in the lower side of the plinth.

    The rotating member 3-is provided on its upper surface with a vertical lug or lug 3d to which the lower end of the upright 4 is fixed, so as to be able to turn, by means of the transverse pin 6. ' The rotating movement of the member 3 is limited in each direction by means of a stop 7 fixed to the base 2 and by shoulders 3e (Figure 4) formed on the rotating member and intended to come into contact with said stop when said stopper. organ is rotated to its full extent in one or the other direction.

   In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the movements of the rod 4 around its pivot 6 in the rotating member 3 and of the arm 5 around its pivot 6a in the upper end of the rod are all. both stabilized by means of a pair of tension springs 8, 8. In this case, these springs are completely enclosed in the hollow interior of the upright 4 and their lower ends are respectively fixed to the upper ends of a pair. of crossed links 9, 9, pivoting in said rotating member 3 about parallel axes. The upper ends of said springs are both connected by means of a link 10 to a short lug 11, at the pivot end of the arm 5.

   A pin or roller @@ 12, supported in the lower end of the upright, passes entropy upper ends of the oroisées links, and the arrangement is such that when the upright is tilted around its pivot in either direction. , one or the other of the rods 9, 9 is moved by said pin or said roller 12 to exert the necessary tension on one or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the other of the two springs to keep the upright in the position in which it is oriented.

   The arrangement is, moreover, such that owing to the very short leverage with which the springs act on the arm, they counterbalance the weight of the arm, the shade and the lamp. The upright can be tilted to any desired position without influencing the relative position of the arm, and vice versa. Provisions can be made to increase the friction around pivot 5a of arm 5 to stabilize the balance when other lamp mounts are employed without changing a standardized spring tension.

  For this purpose, the pivot pin 5a may be provided with a nut allowing it to be tightened further to increase the friction at the pivot.
FIG. 5 illustrates another form in which the arrangements of the upright 4 and of the arm 5 with respect to the pivot are stabilized by means of a pair of tension springs 8, 8, common to both. In this case, however, the springs are disposed on the outside of the upright and their lower ends are respectively attached to the opposite ends of a plate 13 fixed to the rotating member 3 and placed transversely to the column. axis of the pivot 6 of the upright, its ends projecting through holes in the sides of the latter.

   The upper ends of the springs are both connected to the tab 11 of the arm 5 by means of metal wires or rods 14 which pass through slits in the walls of the upright and are connected to said tab by means of a link 10. As in the example described above, the effect produced is to ensure that the upright and the arm remain in any position in which either can be placed around it. their respective pivots.

  When the upright is tilted in either direction, the tension of one spring is increased and that of the other is reduced. It is not necessary that the two springs be of the main force, because if the post is inclined around its pivot in a direction away from the side to which the arm is rotated, the lamp as a whole approaches a position of stable equilibrium. However, in this position, the springs still exert a balancing or stabilizing action. '
Instead of using two springs for stabilization, the arrangements of the post and the arm relative to their pivot can be controlled by a single spring.

   One such arrangement is shown in Fig. 6, in which it is seen that the spring 8, which is a tension spring, is fully enclosed in the tubular post 4. One end of the spring is attached by means of the spring. a link 15 to a leg 3d of the rotating member 3 and the other end to a leg 11 of the arm 5 at a very short distance from the pivot of the latter.

    Also, the arrangement is such that if the upright is inclined from the vertical direction in either direction about its pivot 6 in the rotating member 3, the position of the arm relative to the upright is not influenced, the slight increase in the spring tension acting on the arm with such a short leverage being insufficient to overcome the friction of the pivot of the arm.

   The lower pivoting end of the upright 4 can be enclosed in a removable housing 16 which is nested on the raised part 2a of the base 2 and can be easily lifted.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 to provide access to the pivot pin 6 to adjust the frictional resistance to this pivot.

   The lamp holder can be mounted so as to be orientable at the free end of the arm 5 in any suitable manner, for example, as shown in figure 1, and in section and to a larger extent. scale in figure 7, the lamp can be carried by a wire loop 17 or by a short rod, the free end 17a of which is threaded and orientable in a split socket 18 threaded internally and externally and attached by means of a pivot at 19 at the free end of the swivel arm 5. A socket nut 20 is engaged on said split socket and when it is tightened, it causes the latter to exert frictional pressure on the threaded end 17a of the socket. the wire loop or the rod.

   By means of this arrangement, the lamp holder is universally orientable on the arm.
