 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

  "Methods and apparatus for resistance welding"
The present invention relates to art; electric resistance welding and it relates more particularly to an improved method and apparatus for welding metals by the resistance method.

   Until now, resistance welding machines have been supplied with single-phase alternating current. For two-phase and three-phase installations, which are generally employed in industrial establishments, this leads to unbalanced motive force load and a great disadvantage is encountered when it comes to large machines because of the large amount of energy to be supplied.

   The difficulty lies in the nature of the power transformer.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 hard, which can not transform a polyphase power supply, and a single-phase one; an additional disturbance is due to the large reactance of the secondary circuit of the welding machine, which results in the power consumption being very low and generally less than 30%.

   An attempt has been made to improve this state of affairs by fitting capacitors in the primary circuit of the solder transformer and using a low frequency current, for example 25 periods instead of 60. However, this current low frequency is rarely available and, moreover, the load is not yet balanced when it comes to polyphase current. Other solutions consisted in using a motor-generator group which transforms the polyphase high frequency current into single phase low frequency current, but this significantly increases the cost of the installation.

   Accumulation of energy is another attempt that has been made to solve the problem, but theory and practice have shown that neither electro-magnetic accumulation welding machines nor accumulation machines: electrostatic, cannot supply currents for a period exceeding a small fraction of a second; however, in some cases, it takes several seconds to weld large pieces of metal.

   The object of the present invention is to create a welding process ensuring an improved power factor and making it possible to reduce energy consumption and heat loss. This process is based on the use of electro-magnetic accumulation of energy in order to obtain an alternating current of welding at low frequency.

   Another object is to create a welding process based on the electromagnetic accumulation of energy and in which the welding is carried out by means of a current

   Another object of the present invention is to provide a soldering process in which the current flowing in the secondary circuit during soldering is a low frequency alternating current and, in which a balanced load is taken from a source of alternating current. - native two-phase and three-phase:
Another object of the invention is to provide a resistance soldering process for welding metals, wherein the solder current which passes through the secondary circuit is low frequency alternating current having the best waveform. suitable for the characteristics of the metal to be welded.

   Another object of the invention consists in creating improved devices for applying periodic pulses of direct current supplied by a rectifier to the primary winding of a transformer, and according to which the transformer is characterized by an air gap. in its iron core to increase energy accumulation and to improve the waveform of the solder current induced in the secondary circuit.

   Another object is to create a resistance welding process for metal welding, whereby the waveform of the alternating current in the secondary circuit is changed by varying the voltage and the frequency independently of one of them. the other.

   For these and other purposes, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and operation which will result from the detailed description which follows, together with the accompanying summary and drawings.

   The present invention relates to a resistance welding method using a device consisting of a resistance welding machine provided with a pair of electrodes, one of which is movable to apply mechanical pressure to the part, and comprising a transformer. circuit having a primary circuit and a secondary circuit, with an air gap in the iron core of this welding transformer. A current rectifier capable of transforming a polyphase alternating current into direct current is mounted in the primary circuit and a mechanism is combined with this rectifier and makes it possible to apply periodic pulses of direct current to the primary of the welding transformer.

   Although the use of an air gap is preferable in order to increase the energy accumulation and to avoid saturation of the iron core, the invention also relates to the use of a core. iron without air gap. In this case, for the same purpose which consists in improving the efficiency of the process, an iron of a quality such that it possesses a high permeability and a low retensivity is employed.

   We will first consider the embodiment of the invention which is shown in Figure 1. The place 20

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 welding machine is placed between the fixed electrode 21 and the movable electrode 22 of the welding machine. A pneumatic pressure taken from the air line 24, by the operation of the valve 25, is applied to the piston 23, which imposes a mechanical pressure on the part placed between the electrodes.
21 and 22, which are electrically connected to secondary 26.

   This winding and the connections with the electrodes constitute the secondary 27 of the welding transformer having an air gap 28 in its iron core 29. The primary 30 is electrically connected by contactors 31 and 32 to a rectifier 33. One end of the primary circuit 34 is connected to the rectifier at a neutral point 35 and the other end of this primary is connected to the rectifier at 36. The current source supplying the rectifier 33 is indicated by the reference number 37 and it consists of a usual three-phase alternating current source. The rectifier 33 comprises rectifier tubes 40 of the ignitron type which will be described in detail later.

   When the contactors 31 and 32 are repeatedly closed and opened, an eourarft supplied by the three-phase current source 37 passes into the rectifier 33 and the direct current thus produced then passes into the primary.
30. The direct current pulses which pass through the primary of the welding transformer induce alternating current pulses in the secondary and these pulses pass through the electrodes 21 and 22, as well as into the workpiece.
20, to weld metal parts.

   The circuit diagram of FIG. 2 represents a preferred mode of actuation of the contactors, so that they establish and cut the current in the primary circuit by a rapid succession of operations. The switch 41, which is mounted in series with the coil 42, is connected to the terminals of a current source indicated by L1 and L2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

  The closing of the switch energizes the coil 42 and causes the closing of the contact 43; this has the effect of exciting the coils 44 and 45, the contactor 46 being closed. The energization of the coils 44 and 45 causes the closing of the contactors 31 and 32, and it follows that the direct current supplied by the rectifier passes into the primary 30. When the direct current reaches a predetermined value, the relay to maximum current 47 is energized and contactor 48 is closed.

  This contactor, as well as the coil 49 in series with it, are connected to the supply lines L1 L2. Immediately after the closing of the contactor 48, the coil 49 is energized, which causes the opening of the contactor 46 and as a result the main contactors 31 and 32 cease to be energized, the flow of direct current in the primary being thus interrupted. This stops the energization of the coil 47 of the maximum current relay and causes the opening of the contactor 48. The coil 49 thus ceases to be energized and the result is that the contactor 46 closes, which reestablishes the circuit. coils 44 and 45. The excitation of these coils again causes the contactors 31 and 32 to close and another direct current pulse passes through the primary.

   Successive pulses of direct current are thus sent to the primary of the welding transformer, as long as the operator maintains the switch 41 in its closed position.

   When a direct current voltage Ep is applied to the primary,, a current flows through the winding and tends to reach, along an exponential curve, a constant final value 1p = E, in which the resistance
 EMI7.1
 rI of the primary winding is indicated by Rp. The initial slope of the curve Ip is determined by the quotient E where L represents the self-induction of the primary and secondary magnetically coupled windings. The next slope is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 determined by the time constant of the circuit. This current curve is shown in figure 8. In this figure the Ipiodic curve a current pulse with an open secondary circuit, that is to say the electrodes 21 and 22 being separated from the part.

   The hatched area between the two openings indicates the quantity of energy transferred from the primary to the secondary during the period T T1.

   The secondary current Is curve for the successive pulses is shown in figure 10. The energy W received by the secondary circuit during each pulse, that is to say the hatched area in figure 8, is shown again. presented very significantly by
 EMI8.1
 where R is the resistance of the secondary circuit.

   - Figure 9 shows the field density B in the magnetic circuit of the iron core of the welding transformer as a function of the primary current. The hatched area indicates the electromagnetic energy stored during the pulse. At the moment T1 of the interruption of the flow of current in the primary by opening the contactors 31 and 32, a new current of reverse polarity is induced in the secondary circuit and it disappears following an exponential curve. The collapse of the magnetic field of the iron core in this welding transformer, which induces this second surge of current, is not complete, because of the betentivity of the iron core.

   The welding transformer has an air gap in the path of the magnetic field. These conditions are created to ensure the accumulation of a noticeable amount of electromagnetic energy during the pulse of running. The presence of the air gap prevents the strong saturation of the core.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 iron which takes place in an ordinary transformation when it is subjected to current impulses from one direction only.

   Figure 9, for a transformer having an air gap, shows that the magnetic field collapses almost completely) as indicated by the dashed curve Bl, when the current
Ip returns to zero. In FIG. 12, a similar current has been shown for a transformer having no gap. If we suppose that the current has the same value in the primary, we will notice that a strong saturation is reached and that there thus persists a notable magnetism after the disappearance of the current. The current induced in the secondary therefore has a lower value. This result can be improved by using an iron of such quality that it has high permeability and low retention.

   - Figure 13 shows that the first current pulse during the period of time T T1 produces during the period of time T1 T2 a secondary current approximately equal, when there is no air gap, to that which is obtained when the transformer has an air gap (figure 10). The positive magnitude of the secondary current during the disappearance of the primary current, during the lapse of time T1 T2, is approximately the same, but the current decreases more rapidly dais la. figure 13, because the amount of accumulated energy is relatively small.

   During the second pulse of run
T2 T3, the primary current increases more rapidly than for the first impulse, because the iron core already has a great magnetism when it runs and establishes. Since the speed of the magnetic field is low, a small amount of energy is transmitted from primary to secondary. The subsequent positive secondary current that builds up during the time period T3 T4 is slightly larger than before, because the primary current is more intense, as shown in figure 11.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   The primary circuit and the secondary circuit of the transformer which, in this case, comprises an iron core having the most suitable characteristics and, preferably, an air gap, can be calculated so that the negative and positive secondary pulses have sensi- the same value. The invention therefore relates to a welding device using a low-frequency alternating current in the secondary circuit, this device having the advantage that a balanced load can be taken from a polyphase alternating current supply line. The energy and heat loss is also less with a low frequency alternating current serving as the effective welding current.

   The number of periods of this alternating current which determines the total duration of the weld followed the thickness and characteristics of the material to be welded and can be regulated by means of a time regulator.

   With a suitable rectifier, such as the one shown by way of example in Figure 3, it is possible to change the waveform of the secondary current, because the voltage of the current pulses can be varied. continued. How the waveform can be altered will be explained in detail when referring to Figures 17 to 22 inclusive. The rectifier is characterized by ignitron tubes indicated by the reference numeral 50. Each tube comprises an anode 51, a mercury cathode 52 and a starter rod 53 immersed in mercury, the circuit running from the anode to the cathode and passing through the tube is conductive only when the mercury is ionized.

   When the circuit which passes through the priming rod is closed by the closing of the contactor 54, the current passes through the thermionically controlled tube 55 to the starting rod, which has the effect of immediately deionizing the mercury. in the ignitron tube, the current then passing from n

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 the anode 51 to the cathode 52. The current will flow in this direction only during the positive half-wave of the supplied alternating current. When the negative half-wave is reached, the ignitron tube ceases to be conductive and the same operation is repeated. - fires during the next positive half-wave, provided that contactor 54 remains closed.

   The circuit of the control tube 55, which operates to supply the full voltage of the ignitrons is shown in Figure 4. In this circuit, the grid 56 is connected to the plate 57 and it has the same polarity as this plate. The cathode 58 is connected to the starting rod 53. The control tube thus immediately passes current at the start of a positive half-wave of the alternating current.

  As a result, the ignitron tube becomes conductive at the start of each alternation of the supplied alternating current and the full voltage is obtained for the rectified current drawn.

   - In Figure 5, the grid 56 of the control tube is connected to the plate by a variable resistor 60 and this grid is connected to the cathode by the capacitor 51. When the contact 54 is closed the control tube does not pass. ran immediately to the cathode, because the gate potential remains negative with respect to the plate for a while. The variable resistor setting determines the length of this time before the grid becomes positive enough to allow current to pass through the control tube and thereby ignite the ignitron.

  The greater the delay in ignition caused by the action of the control tube 55, the smaller the proportion of each positive alternance which will pass through the ignitron and, consequently, the lower the voltage of the rectified current will be - low.

   The regulation of the voltage of the primary impulses can be obtained by means of ± a dynamo or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 can be done on the primary to adjust the voltage by varying the ratio between the primary and secondary turns.

   FIG. 6 shows a variant of the invention, a variant in which an apparatus is used to apply, to the terminals of the rectifier, periodic pulses of alternating current supplied by a two-phase or three-phase source. Cam 64 is suitably driven by an electric motor or similar motor, not shown, to cause rotation of the three cam members 65, 66 and 67. These cam members actuate switch members 68, 69 and 70, each element being elastically solicited in the direction desired by the helical springa! 71. Each switch element is also electrically connected to / a terminal of the three-phase current source,

   indicated by reference numeral 72 and controlled by switch 73. When the switch elements are in contact with the cam, switch contacts 74/75 & 76 are closed, resulting in that the rectifier 77 is electrically connected to the three-phase alternating current source. The rectifier 77 comprises several individual half-wave rectifiers 78, each connected to one wire of the three-phase power supply line. The direct current supplied by the rectifier is fed through the circuit 80 to the primary 81 of the welding transformer having an iron core 82 and an air gap 83. As in figure 1, the secondary comprises a winding 84 and electrodes 85 and 86.

   The electrode 86 is movable so as to be able to approach and move away from the part under the action of a pneumatic pressure applied to the piston 87 and supplied by the air line 88, by the control of. a valve 89.

   The embodiment of the invention shown in FIG. 6 also makes it possible to apply a pulse

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 current in one direction at the primary of the transformer, to induce secondary current pulses intended for welding. The method is similar in many respects to that which has been described for Figure 1, except that in this embodiment of the invention, the primary circuit 80 is a closed circuit, so that when the magnetic field collapses in the transformer, a little, current from the secondary circuit is absorbed by this closed primary circuit.

  The collapse of the primary current is therefore gradual. This contrasts with. the instantaneous collapse of the primary current in the embodiment of the invention, shown in Figure 1.

   When the switch 73 is closed, the line current flows through the switch elements and the switch contacts, each time these elements engage.

  This takes place once for each revolution of the cam, since, as described above, the switch elements are engaged with their contacts, except when these elements are actuated, to occupy their open position. , by the cam members 65, 66 and 67 respectively. The resulting pulses of alternating current therefore pass through the rectifier, which transforms them into pulses of direct current, the latter passing, consequently, successively in the primary 81. The establishment of a current in the primary and the collapse of this current induce pulses of secondary current, which are supplied to the electrodes for welding.

   In this embodiment of the invention, the welding transformer is also provided with an air gap designated by 83 to increase the energy accumulation of each pulse of direct current supplied to the primary. The high saturation of the iron core, saturation which would occur in an ordinary transformer when subjected

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 the action of pulses of current in one direction is also eliminated and the waveform of the induced current in the secondary is thus improved.

   Figures 14, 15 and 16 are curves showing graphically how the primary current and the secondary current behave in the embodiment shown in Figure 6.

   It is possible to adjust the waveform of the secondary current to a certain point using the element shown in Figure 7 and actuated by a cam.

  In this embodiment of the invention, the cam 64 is replaced by a cam 90 constituted by two series of cam elements arranged following a certain eagle on the cam. The cam elements 91, 92 & 93 are arranged on the cam 90 so as to initially actuate the switch elements 94, 95 & 96 respectively to bring them to the open position relative to the switch contacts 98. / 98 & 99.

  With the cam 90 continuing to rotate, the switch elements 100, 101 and 102 will actuate the switch elements 103, 104 & 105 if necessary to bring them to the open position with respect to their contacts 106, 107 and 108. The initial opening of the first set of switch elements exerts a resistance in the circuit from the AC supply line to the rectifier, causing each collapse of each circuit. The current pulse arriving at the transformer primary can be set so that it takes place more gradually, allowing the waveform of the induced secondary current to be changed accordingly.

   Each of the contacts 97, 98 and 99 is electrically connected to a phase of the three-phase current source.

  In front of these switch contacts the conductors 110 are connected to the source of alternating current of these

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 conductors ending; by resistors 111. These resistors are adjustable, and in this way, the conductors 112 can be connected at any point along these resistors, to give any desired resistance value.

  At their other end, these conductors 112 are electrically connected to each series of switch elements. The circuit is closed by the conductors 113, which electrically connect the switch contacts 106, 107 and 108 to the rectifier.

   When the switch elements are in contact with the cam 90, they are engaged with their contacts, switches and the rectifier circuit is closed by these switch elements. The switch elements 94, 95 and 96 are then open and automatically insert the resistors 111 into the rectifier circuit. We can therefore adjust the voltage by adjusting the value of the resistance inserted in the circuit. However, the flow of current through the resistor is momentary, because the switch elements 103, 104 & 105 are open at this time and the current has therefore ceased to flow through the rectifier.

  Before the end of each pulse of rectified current arriving at primary 81 the voltage is momentarily reduced and, in this way, the collapse of the current, for each period is regulated so as to thus modify the waveform of the induced secondary.

   In the embodiment of the invention shown
 EMI15.1
 In FIGS. 1 and 2, it can be seen that the waveform of the secondary current can also be modified, since it is possible to vary the frequency and the voltage of the primary current pulses. Figures 17, 18 and 19 are based on the use of the maximum current relay. However, it is understood that a chronometric regulator can replace the maximum current relay and the way of giving the form

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 desired to the secondary current wave using this time regulator is shown schematically in Figures 20, 21 and 22.

   Two curves are shown in figure 17.

  One shows the current having a voltage of 150 volts and the other curve shows the voltage of 75 volts. The primary current pulses of these voltages can be obtained by adjusting the rectifier as described in Figures 3, 4 and 6. The values A and B of the current are taken from the curve at 150 volts, and the value of the current 0 is taken from the curve at 75 volts. These primary current values, as well as others, which may be desired for actual operation, are obtained by setting the relay to maximum current indicated by reference numeral 47 in Figures 1 and 2.

   The value of the primary current indicated by A on the curve at 150 volts is reached during the time To Tx and the contactors of the primary circuit open when this value is reached, and the current of the primary winding quickly collapses, as this is shown schematically.

   The establishment and the collapse of this current in the primaural winding induce in the secondary an alternating current which is represented in figure 18 by curve A. It will be noted that the waveform of this curve differs somewhat of that shown in the figures. 10 and 16, although the time period T1 T2 is the same in all cases, since the opening time for the contactors in the primary circuit depends on the characteristics of the particular coils shown in the circuit diagram of the figure 2. Only the setting of the maximum current relay has been changed.

   The control circuit constants that determine the contactor opening time have not been changed, so

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 that the time T1 T2 is the same for all the curves in figures 10, 16, 18 and 19.

   In figure 18, the curve in phantom lines C represents the alternating current induced in the secondary for the value of the primary current represented in figure 17 and taken on the curve at 75 volts. As an indication, the value of the current C was taken equal to the value of the current A. However, as the voltage is reduced by half, it takes longer for the current to settle up to the same value, which is represented in FIG. 17 by the time To T2. We will notice that. reducing the voltage of the primary current pulses has the effect of lowering the frequency of the induced secondary current.

   Although the charging or settling time is greater for C, the same amount of energy is, accumulated in the welding transformer and, accordingly, the positive thrusts on. the two currents .lA. and C shown in Figure 18 have the same magnitude.

   Curve B shown in Figure 19 represents the value of current B on a curve at 150 volts. The waveform of the alternating current induced in the secondary is still slightly modified, since the time required before this value of the current is reached is now indicated by To Ty. The magnitude of the secondary course of the two thrusts, the negative thrust and the positive thrust, is an excess compared to that shown for curves A and G, because it is conceivable that a greater quantity of energy is accumulated in the welding transformer in this particular case.

   Figures 20 / 2L & 22 show schematically how the waveform of the secondary current is given when a time regulator replaces the maximum relay current. In FIG. 20, two curves have been shown, one for 150 volts and the other for 75 volts. The figure

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 21 shows the secondary current induced for these voltages when the regulator is set to time D. The two alternating current waves in figure 21 are identical with regard to their shape, but the magnitude of the negative thrust and the The positive thrust of the low voltage curve shown in phantom is proportionately smaller than for the high voltage curve.

   Figure 22 shows the portion of the shape of the induced secondary current curve when the time regulator is set to time F. The two curves are substantially identical in shape, but they differ in the magnitude of the negative thrust and positive push. The negative thrust, for the 150-volt curve, is in excess of the 75-volt curve, the latter being shown in phantom. Similarly, the positive peaks of the 150 volt curve are all the greater than those of the low voltage curve.

   One or two time regulators can be used in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2. When a regulator is used, it replaces the maximum current relay. In such a case, the regulator controls the contact closing time, and the interval during which these contacts remain open is controlled by the circuit constants. When two regulators are used, both the closing time and the opening time of the contacts can be adjusted and this adjustment will naturally affect the frequency of the primary current pulses and therefore the frequency of the alternating secondary current. .

   The present invention relates to the way of giving the desired shape to the wave of the secondary alternating current, in order to obtain a waveform most suitable for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 19>

 characteristics of the metal to be welded. Iron and steel, for example, have different characteristics from aluminum. Iron stores heat faster than aluminum, and it can retain heat for longer. Thus the shape of the wave, the shape which produces the desired heating effect on the metal according to the characteristics of the latter, is chosen when the metal is welded.

   Another important advantage of the present invention is the production of a welding current the frequency of which is lower than that of the power supply device in which a balanced load can be taken from an AC power source. Polyphase. While polyphase current is the usual 60 period current, the secondary circuit current used for soldering has a frequency varying between less than one period and 20 periods per second. This low frequency produces a corresponding reduction in the react-ance of the secondary circuit.

     The improved process which is the subject of the invention is applicable to various types of resistance welding, spot and line welding, butt and flat welding, or blacksmithing and resistance heating.

   The invention is not limited to the details nor to the details of construction of the particular embodiment which has been shown in the drawings, other types of devices which may be imagined by those skilled in the art without depart from the scope of the invention.
