 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

  Improvements to the disengageable hydraulic couplings for the transmission of a rotary movement.

   The present invention relates to a disengageable hydraulic coupling for transmitting a rotational movement, by means of a liquid serving as working fluid. This coupling may be of the type in which a fluid pressure generated by centrifugal force is employed to bring friction members into engagement with each other, preferably of the turbine type having propellant and receiver fins acting together to form a circuit for the working liquid.

   The invention relates to this type of couplings or clutches of the type comprising, in addition to the turbine circuit or other working enclosure, a ratative reservoir chamber, means

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 to pass the liquid from the working chamber to the reservoir chamber; and a member forming a fixed or movable trough in the reservoir chamber, arranged to transfer the liquid from this reservoir chamber to the working chamber.

   A coupling system of the aforementioned kind must be charged with an amount of working liquid sufficient to fill the working chamber with a predetermined amount when the system is cold. When the temperature of the liquid rises during operation, the liquid expands and its volume becomes larger than that initially required for filling the working chamber.

   The excess liquid due to this expansion or to a slight excess of filling, in couplings of this known type, collects in the reservoir chamber, from which it follows that the transfer bucket unnecessarily determines a high pressure. in the filling system of the working chamber, with the consequence of a risk of liquid leakage from the apparatus, for example, through a labyrinth passage around the shaft; this also results in the reservoir chamber in a harmful agitation of the liquid produced by the plunging of the transfer trough into the ring of excess liquid and by unnecessary new circulation of the excess liquid through the trough.

   According to a feature of the present invention, these drawbacks are avoided by establishing in the rotating elements of the coupling, for example, in the reservoir chamber, an additional reservoir arranged to collect liquid in excess of the amount necessary for the coupling. chamber and to drain off this excess liquid relatively slowly. The additional reservoir may be annular and carried by the drive element of the coupling.

   Couplings or clutches of the kind specified may be provided with a fixed casing or housing surrounding one

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 shafts of the coupling and entering through an opening in an end wall of the reservoir chamber to support the trough tube. In order to avoid leakage of liquid, it is desirable that the level thereof is below said opening when the coupling is at rest, and this is essential when the opening is closed relative to the housing by a channel-labyrinth, as is usual.

   Therefore, the excess dimensions of the reservoir chamber, in the case of a coupling intended to be employed with its horizontal axis, can be reduced to an appreciable extent by reducing the diameter of said opening and thereby increasing the effective capacity of the chamber. reservoir chamber when the system is at rest.

   It is sometimes desirable to establish a regulating valve on the channel leading from a fixed bucket to the working chamber, the control member of this valve being carried by said housing and with such an arrangement the presence of gold. - valve control valve requires a larger diameter of the opening in the end wall of the reservoir chamber,
Another object of the invention is to satisfy these two conditions of a compact construction and of an external valve control member; this object is achieved, according to another feature of the invention, by using a valve having a control member consisting of a tube mounted axially relative to the housing, so as to be able to rotate and it is connected to a mounted ring on the end part of the casing and acting in connection with one or more orifices on this part.

   When the coupling is of the turbine type, the rear part of the receiving element of the coupling can be covered by a circular shell fixed to the motor element, the card passing through a central opening in this shell and the valve of control being disposed on the part of the casing which is inside the shell. In this case the tank

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 auxiliary can be formed between the shell and an auxiliary shell attached to the previous one on the remote side of the receiver.

   If a pinch-type valve is employed, the trough may consist of a non-adjustable tube and this fixed trough and valve may be arranged to occupy a length which is small relative to the dimensions of the reservoir chamber. This allows the labyrinth disposed between the crankcase and the tank chamber shell to be placed close behind the working circuit, which is especially favorable in a coupling applied to a vehicle, the driving of which sometimes requires heavy lifting. stops on a slope without any risk of oil loss.

   The end wall of the reservoir chamber of this turbine coupling may have a re-entrant shape and partially adapt to a bell-shaped part on the outer end of the housing, this bell-shaped correspondingly. to a mechanical clutch in conjunction with the shaft. An embodiment of the invention applied to a coupling suitable for being adapted to a motor vehicle transmission is described below as an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of this embodiment. Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.

   Figure 3 is a schematic of a power transmission system including the coupling shown in Figures 1 and 2.

   In FIG. 1, a motor shaft 10 which may be the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine ends in a plate 11 forming a flange. Body 13 which will be at

 During this description, the hydraulic coupling propellant element has a journal boss 14 which is centered in a cylindrical bushing recess 15 in the end of the shaft 10. A diaphragm formed by a flexible annular plate 16 is fixed by its inner edge to the plate 11 by bolts 17 and a crown 18 with an angular edge; by its outer edge this diaphragm 16 is fixed to the propellant element 13 by screws 19.

   A shell 20-formed by a pressed sheet steel which closes the rear part of the propellant element 13 is welded by its periphery 22 to a shell 23 made of sheet steel forming an auxiliary tank and whose front end 24 forms a flange which fits on a flange 25 of the thruster.

   All the shells 20, 23 and the propellant form a working chamber 20; this chamber has a boss forming a short tubular sleeve 26 projecting forward.

   A receiver shaft 27 is supported at its front end by a deep groove ball bearing 28 mounted in the hub of the propellant element and this shaft 27 is connected at its rear end to a movement receiver shaft 12 and rigidly journaled, such as for example as the primary shaft of an automobile gearbox; this connection of the shaft 27 with the shaft 12 is made by a mechanical coupling 29 of the known type allowing a slight angular deviation between the axes which it connects. The receiving element 21 and an annular screen 47 are fixed by screws 30 to a hub 31 keyed on the shaft 27.

   The space 34 between the rear part of the receiving element 21 and the shell 20 forms an internal passage for the liquid entering the turbihe circuit, and radial fins 32

 are fixed on the front face of the shell 20 to assist in filling. Inlet orifices 33 distributed around the tubular boss 26 open in the radial inner part of the spaces between the fins 32. A roller bearing 35 is disposed between the shaft 27 and the front end of the boss 26. A nut 36 on the forward end of the shaft 27 fixes the inner race of the bearing 28 on the hub 31 and a washer 371 against the peel 37 of the shaft 27.

  A sheet steel housing 38 forming a reservoir has a cylindrical part the diameter of which is equal to that of the outer edge of the flange 25 of the propellant element. A crown 39 which is welded to the front of this casing 38 comes to bear against the rear face of the rim 24 of the shell of the working chamber, the assembly being fixed to the propellant element by screws 40. The rear part of the tank housing is formed by the wall 41 having a central opening; a tubular sleeve 42 which is integral with it projects forward and at its end is welded an annular plate 43 which projects radially.

   A fixed tubular body 44 is engaged with a slight play in the sleeve 42 and also with play on the shaft 27, the forward end of the sleeve 44 extending inside the boss 26 of the shell 20. of the working chamber. A ring 45 which fits exactly on the cylindrical body 44 is attached to it by screws 46 (Fig. 2) and a drum 48 is attached to this ring immediately in front of the tube 42, and has a cylindrical flange s' extending back around the annular plate 43. A second annular plate 49 is welded to the tube 42, concealing the drum 48.

   Two similarly opposed tubes 50 forming transfer troughs are fixed to the ring 45 and open into a circular channel 51 formed in the reservoir casing 38; these bucket tubes 50 communicate by channels 52 with an annular channel 53 in the part

 front of cylindrical body 44 and a series of evenly spaced orifices 54, establish communication between the outer side of this channel outside the front end of cylindrical body 44 and tubular boss 26 of the working chamber shell.

   A valve ring 55 having corresponding ports 56 is rotatably mounted on the front end of cylinder 44, and has an inwardly facing flange welded to the front end of a tubular piece. 57 mounted in the cylinder 44 in which it can rotate with a slight play relative to the shaft 27. A control lever 58 fixed to the rear end of the tube 57 allows the ring-valve 55 to be rotated, d 'a minimum amount between the position shown by the drawing, the position at which the two series of orifices 54 and 56 are in coincidence, and a position at which these orifices are completely masked.

   In order to prevent the leakage of the working liquid between the shaft 27 and the cylindrical body 44, this shaft is provided with circular reject ribs 59; the valve control tube 57 has a drainage port 60 and the cylinder 44 has ports 61 and 62 leading to a discharge port 63 in the ring 45. The rear end of the stationary cylinder body 44 is bell-shaped opening 64 forming a housing for the flexible coupling 29; it is fixed to the housing 65 of the actuated device, for example a gearbox; the rear wall 41 of the reservoir casing is shaped as a plate in its central part, so that the bell-shaped part 64 is adapted to the re-entrant part of the reservoir casing, thus reducing the length of the transmission apparatus.

   A channel 66 formed in the cylindrical body 44 and the bell 64 leads from the channel 53 to a fitting 67 with suitable tubing and suitable means not shown, not shown, for filling the coupled apparatus with working liquid. is lying.

   The auxiliary reservoir shell 23 has a relatively wide central opening 68; It determines with the shell-working chamber 20 a space 69 forming an auxiliary reservoir-shaped like an annular channel having its opening opening radially inwards.

   The opening of the auxiliary reservoir 69 is thus arranged to receive the liquid which escapes from the working chamber of the system, through the space between the boss 26 of the shell-working chamber and the fixed cylindrical body 44; an annular deflector 70 formed on the front face of the ring 45 is arranged to direct the escaping liquid into the opening of the channel of the auxiliary reservoir; a few discharge openings such as 71, of relatively small cross section, are provided in the outer region of the auxiliary shell 23, through which the auxiliary tank can slowly discharge into the main tank.

   The ring 39 forming the front rim of the main tank housing comprises two or more centrifugal valves of known type, regularly spaced and of relatively large section which are arranged to put the turbine circuit in communication with the main tank when the speed @ rotation of the propellant element falls below a certain value. The valve shown in FIG. 1 is of the ball type, the ball 72 being pushed back by a coil spring 73 which tends to move it away from its seat 74 - formed by a screw cap 75.

   A washer 76 welded to an orifice 77 in the working chamber shell comprises tabs 78 directed towards the center, which limit the movement of the ball relative to its seat.

   The outlet of the valve is indicated at 79 and a leakage adjustment 80, of small cross-section, is established in parallel with the ball valve, in order to assure a discharge.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 sufficient hot liquid from the working chamber in normal operation, when the ball valve is in the closed position.

   When the propellant element 13 is in rapid rotation and the valve sleeve 55 is in the open position, the bucket tubes 50 transfer the liquid from the main reservoir chamber to the working chamber, and if the latter fills, by example as a result of the expansion of the liquid, when there is still a substantial amount of liquid in the main reservoir chamber, the excess liquid delivered by the bucket tubes 50 escapes through the space between the tubular boss 26 of the working shell-chamber and the fixed cylindrical body 44, is collected by the channel 69 of the auxiliary tank.

  The poor circulation through the main reservoir and the bucket tubes 50, due to the flow of hot liquid through the aforementioned nozzles 80 and which through the orifices 71 is discharged into the auxiliary reservoir, does not present any drawback.

   When the speed of the propellant element decreases and the centrifugal valves open, the turbine circuit quickly empties to the main reservoir chamber and if at the same time the valve sleeve 55 is closed, the turbine circuit remains substantially empty. and all harmful torque is practically eliminated.

   The valve control member can be a separate member or it can be coupled to a car control member, in the case of application to an automobile.

   A suitable arrangement of the coupling shown in Figures 1 and 2 in its application to the transmission system of a motor car is shown in Figure 3.

   The motor is Indicated at 81 and 82 generally designates a gear change mechanism of the type

 "traction", that is to say according to UK Patent No. 376,468 and having selector transmission clutches arranged to be directed to the engagement by a preselector 84 and to engage automatically when synchronism is established between them. propellant and receiver elements, the transmission also comprising an auxiliary slip coupling, for example in the form of a friction clutch 83 coupled to its input shaft directly connected to the receiver element of the hydraulic coupling (indicated by the tank shell - see 38)

   and an output shaft 85 with a ratio giving a speed which is not lower than that given by the largest gear ratio of the transmission; thereby, during changes from a low gear to a high gear ratio, the gear ratio of the hydraulic coupling receiver and shaft 85 can be brought to that necessary for non-engaging. interrupt the transmission of engine torque. Transmission selector clutches are preferably of the synchro-automatic type described in English Patent No. 486, 589. Clutch 83 can be engaged by the counterclockwise movement of a lever. 86 swiveling at 87 on the gearbox.

   A control pedal 88 pivoting at 89 on the gearbox and whose movement is limited by stops 90, is integral with a lever 91 connected to the control lever 58 of the valve of the hydraulic coupling, by a billet 92, a double lever 93 pivoting at 94 on the box and an articulation 95.

   The arrangement is such that when the pedal 88 is brought against one or the other of the stops 90, the valve of the hydraulic coupling is opened, while when the pedal is halfway between the stops, the valve is opened. closed. A second lever 96 rigidly secured to the pedal 88 is connected by a rod 97 and a spring connection 98 to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 clutch control lever 86. The elastic articulation 98 comprises a groove 99 in which is engaged a pin 100 of the lever 86, this groove being of such length as to allow the pedal to be lowered far enough to close the valve without however acting on it. the clutch. A further lowering of the pedal then acts on the clutch, the elastic articulation allowing the pedal to be fully lowered.

   A tension spring 101 recalls the pedal, towards the upper stop 90. When it is necessary to almost completely interrupt the transmission of motion between the engine and the gearbox, for example in order to allow the gear train of the latter to be put in the forward or reverse position or in neutral, with the engine running at idle speed, pedal 88 is lowered halfway so as to close the valve. In gear changes, in normal condition with the car moving. the pedal is completely lowered, the momentary closing of the valve when the pedal passes the middle of its travel is too short to have an appreciable effect, since the centrifugal ball valves 72 are then closed, being applied to their seats 74.

   The effective capacity of the auxiliary tank can be 10 to 25% of the capacity of the turbine circuit.

   In this hydraulic coupling system the front end of the tube on the tank housing can be closed behind the working chamber shell, sufficient space being left for the passage of the transfer bucket tubes and consequently the system n It is not subject to leakage when it is at rest, its axis sloping rapidly upwards, towards the end of the propellant element, as may occur in practice, for example for traction transmissions. In modified embodiments, the auxiliary tank can be carried by the main tank housing,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 or else it can be fixed to the cylindrical casing body, suitable deflector members being provided to direct the excess liquid which escapes into the auxiliary reservoir.

   In another embodiment of the invention, suitable for use with electric motors as an automatic starting clutch, the adjustable valve sleeve can be replaced by a spring-loaded valve established to open when the speed of propellant element and with it the pressure developed by the bucket tube reaches predetermined values. In such systems, centrifugal drain valves can be omitted, particularly when starting and stopping maneuvers are infrequent.
