Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
BREVET D'INTENTION Société anonyme dite : SOCIETE DES PROCEDES SERGE BEAUNE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PATENT OF INTENT Public limited company known as: SOCIETE DES PROCEDES SERGE BEAUNE.
Devices and methods for authenticating, by printing, official documents and other applications.
Priority of a patent application filed in France on June 15, 1944
Stamps in oily ink or dry stamps that are affixed to official or other documents are extremely easy to falsify, and that without the counterfeiters needing, for this purpose, to have important, complicated material. , bulky and delicately handled. Stamps, seals or other identification or authentication imprints are generally easily accessible on the document which bears them and can thus be detached in order to be reproduced or modified without great difficulty.
The present invention relates to means capable of being used separately or in combination with one another and which completely eliminate the above drawbacks.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
recalled.
In accordance with the invention, the authentication imprint @ instead of being affixed on the document or object or on the exterior face of a label that is glued or fixed, is printed on the interior face of an extremely thin transparent or translucent film, made of an adhesive material, such as gelatin for example, the mono or polychrome printing itself being made in fatty ink in a translucent layer; and the film thus printed on its inaccessible face is made adherent to all or part of the document or of the object to be authenticated, its removal thus becoming impossible without deterioration or destruction.
In accordance with a particular embodiment of the invention, the difficulty of falsifying the inner seal affixed to the adherent film is further considerably increased by a color printing carried out using the particular means which are the object. of a separate patent application, dated today, in the name of the applicant, requesting that the latter intends to file at the same time as the present one. Said means themselves include the use of special, expensive and delicate handling processes and equipment which are covered by French patents n 654. 934 of May 29, 1928, and n 670,376 of February 27, 1929. of the plaintiff.
A practical embodiment of the invention, independent of the special color printing mode, will be described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing.
FIG. 1 shows, by way of example, a fragment of an identity card established by applying the methods and devices in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is a section taken along II - II of FIG. 1. the thicknesses of the backing paper, of the photograph and especially that of the thin film bearing the printing on its inside face are greatly exaggerated in order to make this section more easily intelligible,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the example shown, @@ has been assumed that the document to be authenticated was an identity card comprising a strong paper support S on which is fixed a photograph P.
In accordance with the invention, the photograph is covered in whole or in part (in part in the example 'of the figures) by a very thin transparent film R, which bears, on its inner face, the seal of authenticity, printed in characters preferably themselves translucent so as to be able to be placed on the photograph, without prejudice to the sharpness and the visibility of the latter. The film, printed on its inner face is made in accordance with the invention, of an adhesive material such as gelatin; it is practically constituted by the outer layer of a transfer paper suitable for this particular application, this adaptation constituting one of the elements of the invention that the applicant claims.
The paper is coated by a known method with a layer of gum arabic, but the gum for the new application which is made of the transfer paper is highly concentrated at 13%, for example, whereas for the gum for the new application. transfer of sensitized gelatin papers this gum is hardly concentrated above 5%. The film to be transferred is moreover made up of a very thin layer of transparent gelatin at a concentration reduced to approximately 10%. This is another characteristic which distinguishes it from photographic films where the gelatin is mixed with a sensitizing product (silver nitrate or the like) which the transfer paper used for the present invention does not contain.
In the case where the film is to receive, for example, the imprint of a seal of authenticity, this is imprinted on the gelatin side of the transfer paper, the imprint being made on the inside. monochrome oily ink or by polychrome printing processes. The test thus obtained is, for the establishment of the film on the document to be authenticated, soaked in acidulated water at 6% acetic acid and applied immediately, by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
gelatin side, at the desired location in the document. Adhesion is made perfect by the action of a rubberized roller. The next step is to remove the gummed paper.
As the gum is then dissolved in cold water and in a relatively thick layer, it can be removed by lifting with its backing paper.
The adhesion of the printed film on its inner face is, as mentioned above, achieved by pressure under a roller.
The stamp and the photograph remain perfectly visible by transparency under the adhesive film which, given its extreme thinness, is practically incorporated into the document and could not in any case be removed without it being damaged with the impression it bears on its inner face and thus be unusable. In this way, an adherent stamp with inaccessible printing is thus produced, which proves a perfect guarantee against any fraud or falsification.
In practice, the difficulties of imitation, reproduction or falsification can, as has already been indicated, be very considerably increased by the color printing of the film, especially if this printing is made by the professionals. - assigned and specific devices covered by today's separate application filed in the name of the applicant.
The difficulty of forgery could possibly be increased, if provision is made, in the transfer paper printed on its inner face, for perforations suitably arranged and distributed, or if provision is made for the film to have sinuous or broken edges on the inside. instead of straight edges.
It goes without saying that the inaccessible authentication stamp affixed to the adherent inner face of the film, we could possibly add an outer seal affixed part on the film made adherent and part on the free part 'of the document. In general, the device and the particular means of authentication in accordance with the invention may be
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
associated with all other usual known means.
Finally, the very thin gelatin layer of the transfer paper can receive, by known means, any appropriate coloring corresponding or not to that of the document or object on which it is intended, to adhere.
To facilitate the transfer, that is to say to make it easier to remove the gummed paper, there may be provided on the paper a protruding tab or margin not covered with gum and gelatin.
The authentication devices and methods described for it to be used to authenticate trademarks on labels or other printed matter with which packages of various products are provided, on vials or bottles or various envelopes used in pharmacies, in the perfume industry, etc ....
Attached to the present description is a sample of a product obtained by applying the methods and means in accordance with the invention according to the embodiment of paragraph 3a of the summary.
