Alliage au nickel-chrome à caractère a.ust^nitique.
EMI1.2
la. Socirvt-' dite : 5IIlllàY JESSOP AND 1016 IJMITED Erightside Works à Sheffield (Angleterre)
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Nickel-chromium alloy with a.ust ^ nitic character.
EMI1.2
the. Socirvt- 'dit: 5IIlllàY JESSOP AND 1016 IJMITED Erightside Works in Sheffield (England)
This invention relates to nickel-chromium steels having austenitic character, that is to say having a cubic structure centered on the wafer.
It is known to incorporate in a.ciers with a high chromium content a certain proportion of one or more of the following metals:
- niobium (columbium), tantalum, titanium, vanadium and zirconium, because of the affinity of these metals for carbon, and thereby to govern the. formation of carbides in steel, which can give rise to intercrystalline fragility,
The object of the invention is to create chromium-nickel steels of austenitic character which exhibit a high resistance to sliding at high temperatures.
'
The invention is based on this observation that by the incorporation into nickel-chromium a, cers of a proportion of between 0.05 and 15.00% of one or more of the metals of the group comprising niobium ( columbium), tantalum, vanadium, titanium and zirconium, not only is their aptitude for brittleness in the long term combated, but one obtains

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
For steels capable of being subjected, during their use, to very high temperatures, a proportion of between 3% and 3.5% of niobium gives very satisfactory results, and a proportion of 10% of niobium with any one or more of the metals: tantalum, vanadium, titanium or zirconium, gives even better results.
Due to the high price of niobium and analogous metals, a proportion of the order of 10% or more may be open to criticism if price considerations are essential.
The proportion of tungsten and (or) of molybdenum is between 0.05% and 10%, a proportion situated in the vicinity of 2.5% being generally satisfactory.
In addition, according to the invention, the steels may contain 'a certain proportion of cobalt of between 0% and 30%, the addition of which a. cha, nce to increase the. slip resistance, a proportion in the vicinity of 10% cobalt giving extremely satisfactory results.
Steels according to the invention may additionally contain a certain proportion of nitrogen and, by way of example of a high nitrogen content applicable to steels included within the scope of the invention, it is may indicate a proportion of nitrogen equal to 0.3%, a more normal proportion being 0.06 to 0.3% The nitrogen can be introduced into the alloys by the intervention of a ferro- highly nitrogenous chromium.

This has the effect of enhancing the. hardness and the. resistance to a.l1X tests at temperatures up to 400 C. This improvement may also be accompanied by a decrease in the resistance of meta.l to tenp4ra. high durations.
Machining processing at. cold can be applied at the stage immediately following the treatment at elevated temperatures, i.e. the impregnating heat treatment to which it has. been alluded to above.
By subjecting steels in accordance with the invention to a mechanical treatment, in particular by compression in a press, by forging or by rolling at temperatures below those which these steels would normally be thus treated (for example at temperatures between 600 C. and 800 C.) the resistance of these steels to high temperatures as well as their slip resistance can be greatly increased without otherwise excessively reducing their ductility.
In addition, if a parreil treatment is applied before the impregnation heat treatment, indicated above in the first place,
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
it is possible to further improve their resistance to sliding without an exaggerated reduction in their ductility.
The invention resides particularly in the a, ciers a.ya, nt the compositions specified in the aforementioned examples and in the steels containing the constituents, indicated and in the proportions exactly equal to or close to those which are indicated in these examples da, ns la, as the proportions of these a.ciers are themselves close to those indicated above.
The invention encompasses objects intended to be subjected to high temperatures and, in particular, the valves of high speed internal combustion engines and the rotors and blades of gas turbines or the like. constituted by a.ci ers a.yant the above-mentioned characters.
CLAIMS 1.- Nickel-chromium steel formed by the following constituents: carbon 0.08 to 1.00%, silicon 0.1 to 2.00%, manganese 0.1 to 2.00%; nickel 5 to 30 / {,, chromium 30 to 5%, tungsten and (or) molybdenum 0.05 to 10%, and 0.05 to 15.00 of one or more of the metals from the group consisting of niobium, tantalum , va, nadium, titanium and zirconium, the rest of the, composition of the steel consisted of iron and inevitable impurities.
