<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Improvements made or related to flexible joints.
This invention relates to a flexible joint and, more particularly to a ball or ball joint for use in fluid conduits, where the fluid is subjected to very high pressures, such as 3000 pounds per square inch. .
According to the present invention, the improved flexible seal comprises a packing or gasket placed between a box and a ball joint, means for maintaining said gasket in sealed contact with said ball joint, and an annular member or ring, of deformable material, arranged to be pressed against the seal and the box in order to form a seal or closure between the latter.
In one form of the present invention, the improved flexible joint comprises a box and a ball, adapted to be received by said box and retained in movable sealing engagement therewith, as well as a gasket. rigid material having a sliding fit in said box and having a surface in contact with the. outer surface of said ball joint,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and an annular element or ring, of deformable or elastic material, constructed and arranged so as to be pressed against the gasket and the box and so as to close the space resulting from the sliding fit between them.
a feature of the invention is to provide a novel sealing device for the seal, comprising a gasket of metal, or other suitable substance, which is adjusted to slide or to play lightly in its case, and a collapsible ring, of rubber or other suitable material, arranged to fill and seal any openings resulting from the loose fit. This allows rapid assembly of the seal and eliminates the need to run in the gaskets in the box, which not only is a waste of time, but never satisfactorily gives the desired result, for a tight seal under a very high pressure, which constitutes the object of the invention.
another feature is the use of a metal gasket having a straight seat for the ball joint, thus eliminating the need to run in a curved seat in each gasket to receive the ball with which it was to be used, two balls not being never exactly the same size. By the present invention, the ball will itself make a seat in the liner by wearing it out when the liner is made of material which is not as hard as that of the ball.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a seal according to the invention; Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view following the

line 2-2 of Figure 1; the figure ? is a partially sectional view of another construction according to the invention ;. Figure 4 is a fragmentary, partially sectioned view of another alternative construction; Figure 5 is a view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4; Figures b and 7 are enlarged fragmentary views, partially in section, of further variations of the lower part of the seal shown in Figure 4.
In the embodiment of the invention, shown in Figures 1 and the drawings, 10 shows a box having a tubing or neck 11 arranged to be screwed into a section of pipe or conduit such as brake piping. a large airplane where the fluid is subjected to a very high pressure such as 3000 pounds per square inch.
The pipe 11 leads to a chamber 12, having an annular well 13 in its closed end, and an open end 14, enlarged and threaded, provided with a shoulder 15. a ball 16, having an outer surface 16a, practically hemispherical , extends into the open end 14 of the box, where it is held in place by a peitagonal metal packing or gasket 17 and a washer 18 in a nut 19 arranged to be screwed onto the end 14 of the box and wedged by a fixing screw .. the.
In order to retain the ball in sealed engagement with the lining, a ball boot 20 is provided in a spring bearing support 21 comprising a spider mounted in an annular shoulder 22 of the ball 16, said support being held in place. placed by a spring ring 23 in an annular pocket 24 of the ball 16.
The ball box also has its seat in a pressure element 25, the upper part of which
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is reduced and provided with a shoulder 26 providing a seat for one end of a spring 27, the other end of which is arranged to rest in the well 1a, at the closed end of the chamber 12 of the box, It will be noted that the height of pocket 24 is considerably greater than the thickness of spring ring 23 so as to allow limited vertical movement of the spring support bracket 21.
The upper surface 28 of the liner slopes downward and when in position is spaced from the shoulder 15 of the box, thereby leaving an annular space or chamber in which a ring is located. circular 29 of rubber or similar material (called rubbery), sometimes referred to as an "O-ring", which is pressed against the wall of the can by the conical surface of the liner.
The inner surface 30 of the liner, which contacts the outer surface of the ball, is flat but at an angle, as shown. In order to prevent the seal from rotating with the ball under the high pressures at which the device is used, a ball 31 is provided which is placed in complementary holes or housings of the seal and the retaining ring. a shoulder is also provided near the open end of the nut to form a seat for a dust seal 32. The tubing 33 of the ball joint is angled at 34 and has a threaded end for connection to another section of the ball joint. pipe or 'conduit.
Construction provides a flexible waterproof seal. The ball-to-packing connection allows limited amplitude movement between parts, and the rubber ring and packing prevent leakage. The spring pressure, in addition to the fluid pressure, will press the ball joint against the packing to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cause full pressure at this point.
Fluid pressure against the rubber ring will deform it and press it fully against the top surface of the liner and the adjacent inner side wall of the box to seal any opening between the liner and said side wall as a result of the fit. sliding of the packing inside (to be distinguished from the interference fit resulted from the lapping of the packing in the box, as was previously necessary).
Nut 19 and washer 18 can be of considerable thickness, as they provide the base for the packing against which the heavy pressure is exerted. In order to fit these pieces in place, they must pass around the elbow of the tubing, and therefore the openings in these parts must be significantly larger than the circumference of tubing 33. Also, because of the Flexibility of the joint, there must be sufficient space between the tubing and these parts to allow lateral movement of the tubing. To protect the ball and its seat in the seal against dust, the hermetic closure 32 is provided.
This closure is made of rigid fibrous material or other suitable material and is relatively thin so that it can be passed around the elbow of the tubing and still have a tight fit with the tubing. The seat for this closure is larger. diameter than that of the closure and of depth slightly greater than the thickness thereof in order to allow the closure to move freely with the tubing, while still maintaining effective closure contact for the tubing.
Figure 3 shows a device specially designed for even greater pressures, such as
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
6000 pounds per square inch. In this construction, the rotule 58 has a truncated spherical outer surface (more exactly the central segment of the sphere) and the trim 59 is placed against the lower part of the surface where it rests on a 0 ring. , 60, of soft metal, annealed copper, or similar material, in an annular passage or chamber VI of triangular cross-section between the lower end 62 of the box u3, a nut 64 screwed thereon, and the surface bevelled contiguous 65 of the trim. As it is initially adjusted, the ring is of sufficient thickness to space the packing from the upper surface of the nut 64.
Pressure of the ball against the liner not only wears a complementary surface on its inner face, but deforms the ring until it usefully closes the opening between the liner and the. inner surface of the lower end of the box. In Figures 4 to 7, inclusive, of the drawings, there is shown an alternative construction of the support or the retaining ring and. construction variants of the circular ring. In these constructions the nut 19 is omitted and the packing 39 at its seat is supported on a four piece retaining ring which extends into a portion 41 cut into the outer end of the packing and which is , in turn, rested or supported on an annular groove or recess 42 in the enlarged end 43 of the box 44.
This construction not only eliminates the need for the nut 19, but allows the use of a metal ring which will not have to be subjected to stress, when it is inserted and, therefore, the metal will be stronger and stronger. will be more secure.
The joint is assembled by inserting the ball joint, the elastic ring and the gasket into the box and raising them upwards until the section support ring can
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
be slipped into the groove. The elements are then lowered until the lining rests on the ring. The bushing sections will be held in place as long as pressure is applied to them by the packing, since the distance between the end of the groove and the edge of the notched section is nearly the same or slightly larger than the width of the ring sections. Since the sections of the ring are considerably wider than the depth of the notched section, the edge of the latter will retain the sections in the groove.
In Figure 4, the circular ring 45 is of the same angular cross section as the outer side or end of the space or chamber 46 above the liner 47.
In Figure 6, the top dimension 48 of the gasket 49 tilts upward and the ring 50 is of the same angular cross-section as the space or chamber 51, and has a narrow V-slot. 52 in the side facing the patella.
In Figure 7, the upper side 53 of the liner 54 tilts downward and, again, the bush 55 is of the same cross-section as the space or passage 56 it occupies above. the gasket 54, and has a large gente b8 in the form of V. In each of these construction variants, the ring having the same cross section as the chamber in which it is placed, can, when it is deformed, close more effectively the sliding connection between the trim and the box. V-slits are made for the same purpose, the pressure against the sides of the slits expanding the rings in all directions, for that purpose. although certain embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that this is subject to many variations.
It is therefore possible to make changes in the construction and in the layout without

departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
