<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

La figure 1 msntre un appareil de contrôle ré'alisé conformément à l'invention et destiné à faire varier le courant de décharge d'une lampe , à décharge gazeuse de type courant;

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
Dans l'exemple représenté à la figure 2, la lampe 8 peut être un tube fluorescent sbandard àe 80 watts ayant un courant de décharge nominal de 0,8 ampère et une chute de tension d'approximativement 115 volts entre ses électrodes en marche régulière , Dans ce cas les deux enroulements 15 et 16 sont de grandeur égale et sont agencés pour supporter un courant qui n'est pas inférieur à 1,3 ampères En outre., pour une source de courant alternatif de 220 volts R.M.S à 50 cyclespar seconde , le noyau de la bobine de réactance et les en- roule;
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>
<Desc/Clms Page number 23>
<Desc/Clms Page number 24>
<Desc/Clms Page number 25>
<Desc/Clms Page number 26>
<Desc/Clms Page number 27>
<Desc/Clms Page number 28>

"Improvements relating to the control of electric discharge lamps".
The present invention relates to an AC control apparatus for gas discharge lamps. It is particularly relative, in certain aspects, to a tester for hot cathode discharge lamps of the special type, in which the two discharge electrodes are each associated with an electron emitting filament which is electrically heated. during the ignition of the lamp so as to promote the subsequent initiation of the main electric discharge between the two electrodes. The monitoring apparatus according to the present invention is employed for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
checking said lamps during ignition and during the period of regular operation.
It does not matter, for the operation of the apparatus which is the subject of the invention, whether the lamps employed are or are not provided with a fluorescent coating.
For the operation of gas discharge lamps a higher potential is generally required between the discharge electrodes of the lamp, to establish the discharge than to maintain the latter. This is due to the fact that the conductivity of the gas contained in the lamp is negligible when the gas is not ionized, but increases very rapidly with the degree of ionization.
Various starting devices, such as thermionic electron emitting electrodes or short-circuited auxiliary discharges inside the lampa, are used to produce local ionization and thus reduce the difference between the starting voltages. and regular operation, but in all types of gas discharge lamps the starting voltage is higher than the regular operating voltage.
Since increasing the discharge current of these lamps increases the degree of ionization of the gas and thus reduces the voltage developed in the discharge interval, it will be readily appreciated that prolonged maintenance of the ignition voltage between the electrodes of the lamp would destroy it.
When such a lamp is operated by means of alternating current, it is common practice to automatically reduce the voltage of the lamp, when the discharge current of the lamp increases, by placing a current limiting reactance coil, by series with the lamp on the alternating current source. The steady-state discharge current is then determined.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by the supply voltage, by the characteristics of the lamp and by the reactance of the coil, and can be easily calculated in a known manner,
For a given lamp and alternating current source, the discharge current is only determined by the inductance of the limiting reactance coil.
The object of the present invention is to make it possible to vary the discharge current of a gas discharge lamp during regular operation of the lamp, by means of an electrical device, and, if necessary, away from the lamp.
According to the invention, a control apparatus intended to operate a gas discharge diaper from an alternating current source, comprises a reactance coil limiting the discharge current, provided with an auxiliary winding. direct current and connected in series with the gas discharge lamp, so that the discharge current of the lamp is determined by the magnitude of a uni-directional magnetic flux in the core of the reactance coil, due to the auxiliary winding.
The reactance coil may comprise a laminated core of the shell type and the winding of the reactance coil may consist of two parts, each of these parts being arranged on one of the outer branches of the core, the two parts. being connected astatically, so that little or no magnetic flux from the said outer branches passes through the central branch of the core. The DC auxiliary winding can then be wound onto the central branch of the core and the unidirectional magnetic flux can be controlled by varying the current.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from a local source of direct current flowing through the auxiliary winding.
The circuit element of the DC circuit of the auxiliary winding, which controls the DC current flowing through this winding, may be located some distance from the lamp at a point from which it is desired to control the current of lamp discharge.
It is advantageous to use as a local source of direct current, an alternating current rectifier actuated, either directly or by means of an insulating transformer, from the same source of alternating current as that of the lamp,
For gas discharge lamps of the special type described, the usual form of the control device consists of a reactance coil, limiting the discharge current, connected at one of its ends to a blade of the alternating current source and by its other end to one end of a lamp filament. The other end of this filament is connected via a start switch, usually of a special shape, to one end of the second filament.
The other end of the second filament is connected to the other pole of the alternating current source, which closes the circuit in series through the alternating current source. An additional switch is also provided to establish or cut the connection between the series circuit and the supply line of the power source.
When this switch is closed, a series circuit is established through the limiting reactance box and the two filaments connected in series by the closed start switch. The resistance of the filaments in series with the reactance of the reactance coil is such that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The desired heating current passes through the filaments - This current raises the temperature of the filaments, making them emitters of electrons and producing local ionization of the gas in the lamp,
The start switch connected between the two filaments is usually arranged so as to open automatically when the heating current of the filament is passed for a while * This interruption of the current without the limiting reactance coil induces a high shock voltage, which appears between the electrodes of the lamp, which causes the initiation of the main discharge between them. When the lamp has ignited, the discharge current is maintained at the normal value for the lamp by the discharge current limiting reactance coil, which has the appropriate reactance value for this% effect.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved control apparatus for gas discharge lamps of the special type described, which allows the ignition of the lanpe, without 1! using auxiliary switches, either manually or automatically and without exposing yourself to high shock voltages.
According to the invention, a control apparatus for a gas discharge lanpe of the type described, provides an electric power source for heating each of the two filaments of the lamp, continuously applies the ignition potential between the two electrodes the heating of the filaments and automatically reduces the heating source of the filaments when the lamp is switched on,
The two filaments are therefore heated to the temperature
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Required erasure during the ignition period and when the lamp is ignited, the power to the filaments is reduced, so that the life of the latter is preserved.
According to one embodiment of the invention, a control apparatus for a gas discharge lamp of the written type and in which the total wattage of the filaments of the lamp during ignition is less than the wattage of the lamp. the lamp during its regular operation, comprises a limiting reactance coil and a transformer, the limiting reactance coil having the inductance necessary to maintain the discharge current of the lamp at its normal value, when the booine is connected in series with the lamp during its regular operation, the transformer having a primary winding wound to provide approximately the voltage of the alternating current source and being connected in series with the limiting reactance coil,
with the alternating current source and effectively in parallel with the gas discharge interval of the lamp, said transformer comprising, moreover, two secondary windings each supplying filaments of the lamp and wound to provide the heating current and voltage required, when almost all of the supply voltage is applied to the transformer primary, with the two secondary windings isolated from each other and sufficient voltage to ignite the lamp when the filaments are hot being applied between these windings.
In this embodiment of the invention, the two secondary windings can be connected to opposite ends of the primary winding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
or, alternatively an additional high voltage secondary winding may be connected between these secondary windings.
Another object of the present invention is to provide for the introduction into the circuits of the filaments of voltages opposite to those coming from the secondary windings of the transformer, when the lamp is ignited. To this end, in accordance with the invention, a control apparatus for a gas discharge lamp of the type described comprises a limiting reactance coil and a transformer, the primary winding of the transformer being connected and to the current source. alternating and the two secondary windings of said transformer each being wound so as to supply the required heating current and voltage to one of the filaments of the lamp and the limiting reaotanoe coil being connected in series with the lamp via a sufficient voltage source to ignite the lamp, when the filaments are hot,
having the inductance necessary to maintain the discharge current of the lamp at its normal value during regular operation and arranged to induce in the circuits of the two filaments a voltage opposing that emanating from the secondary windings of the transformer, when the discharge current of the lanpe passes through the said reactanoe coil.
In one embodiment of the invention, wherein the limiting reacting coil is composed of two parts, one part being located in each line going to the lamp, each part comprises a secondary winding connected in one of the heating circuits. Obviously, we can make sure that the opposite voltage emanating from the secondary windings of the reactance coil exactly compensates for that
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
which emanates from the secondary windings of the transformer.
According to other variants, the two parts of the limiting reactance booine may each have a part of their winding common to both the discharge current circuit of the lamp and to one of the filament circuits, or even the coil of Limiting reactance can be connected in one line only with the lamp and have two secondary windings, each connected to one of the filament circuits.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a control apparatus by means of which the brightness of a lamp of the special type described can be continuously reduced until the lamp is extinguished and, if it is led. aut by means of which this lamp can be immediately re-ignited, and its brightness can be increased continuously until reaching the normal operating brightness.
The ability to put these lamps in the back-up mode is desirable for a certain number of uses requiring the adjustment of the brightness, for example for the putting of the lighting in standby in the places of entertainment or, when use is made of. 'a certain number of lamps of different colors, to selectively put the lamps on standby in order to adjust the colors.
The decrease and increase in brightness required in these cases is not possible, with the usual adjustment mechanism described, because the ignition voltage of the lamp is higher than the regular running voltage and therefore. that the operation of the start switch and the heating of the filaments take a certain time after the lamp has gone out,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
before the main discharge can be started again.
According to the invention, a control apparatus intended to carry out the placing of such a lamp in the sleep state, comprises a variable reactance element serving to adjust the discharge force of the lamp when it is in use and a device for providing electric heating to each of the two filaments of the lamp, and automatically reducing the heating when the discharge current increases from zero to the desired operating value, and automatically increasing the heating as the discharge current decreases.
In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, such a monitoring apparatus comprises a transformer and a reactance coil limiting the discharge current, the transformer having a primary winding wound to provide approximately the voltage of the source of the alternating current and connected in series, with the limiting reactance coil via the alternating current source and effectively in parallel with the gap of / the said transformer further comprising / gas discharge in the lamp, / two windings secondary, each feeding one of the filaments of the. lamp and coiled to provide the heating current and voltage required when almost all vol- tage is applied to the transformer primary,
the two secondary windings being isolated from each other and sufficient voltage being applied between them to ignite the lamp when the filaments are heated, the reactance coil having an auxiliary DC winding, the discharge current of the lamp being determined by the magnitude of a unidirectional magnetic flux in the core of the. coil of
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
reactance, due to. the secondary winding.
According to another embodiment of the present invention, the monitoring apparatus comprises a reactance controlling the discharge current, consisting of one or more reactance elements connected in series with the lamp and a transformer, the transformer comprising a primary winding connected sideways with the series combination comprising the lamp and at least one of the reactance elements, said transformer further comprising two secondary windings each wound to supply the required heating current and voltage to the one of the lamp filaments, the reactance being arranged to induce in the two circuits of the filaments a voltage increasing with the discharge current of the lamp and opposing the voltage emanating from the becondaire windings of the transformer,
a reactance element having a magnetic core carrying a reactance winding and a secondary DC winding, the discharge current of the lamp being controlled by a uni-directional magnetic flux flowing in this magnetic core, due to the DC current passing through the auxiliary winding.
In this specification, a form of variable reactance which can be used in general with gas discharge lanpes has been described herein, this form of reactance is suitable for use in the embodiments of the invention described above, for putting hot cathode gas discharge lanpes having filaments to the back burner and relighting them.
The various arrangements of the filament circuits for supplying a heating current to the two filaments of a lamp of this special type can be made.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>

The two parts 15, 16 are wound on the outer legs of the reactor coil core and are connected, astatically, so that the magnetic flux of the coil 16 passes through the center leg of the reactor coil core. reactance opposes that of winding 15.
Therefore little or no flux from the coil windings passes through the central branch of the reactance coil core, regardless of the current, which passes through windings 15 and 16. An auxiliary current winding 24 continuous is wound on the central branch of the nucleus. / is / The free end of coil 16 connected to terminal 1 and the free end of coil 15 is connected to an electrode, of a gas discharge lamp. The other electrode of the lamp 8 is connected to terminal 2.
One end of the winding 24 is connected to the slide contact of a variable resistor.

23, the other end of which is connected to one of the poles of a local battery 31.
The gas discharge lamp 8 is shown schematically, no auxiliary mechanism for controlling the starter is shown since this varies according to the type of gas discharge lamp employed and does not fall under the operation making the starter. object of the present invention.
The windings 15, 16 of the limiting reactance coil are arranged to withstand the maximum allowable discharge current of the lamp 8. The core of the reactance coil and the windings 15,16 have dimensions such as when the direct current passing through the winding 24 is at its minimum or is zero, the combined inductance of the windings 15,16 limits the discharge current of the lamp 8 to the minimum value required at the particular voltage of the source d 'food. If the tester is to be used with alternating current sources of more than one voltage, the windings 15, 16 may be provided with suitable branches or branches.
The windings 15 and 16 are preferably both provided with corresponding by-passes in order to maintain the cancellation of the flux in the central branch of the core of the reactance coil.
In Figure 2, windings 15 and 16 are astatically connected to each other as described. The free end of the flow 15 is connected to one end of a filament 9 of the lamp B.
The other end of the filament 9 is connected via the start switch 32 to one end of the second filament denoted by 10. The other end of the filament - 10- is connected to the terminal, 2 The auxiliary winding 24 and the variable resistor

23 are connected in series to the output of a rectifier element 25 connected in bridge. The rectifier element 25 rectifies the alternating current from the secondary winding of a transformer 4, the primary of which is connected to terminals 1, 2. A power factor correction capacitor 33 is connected to. terminals 1, 2 in the usual way.
The operation of the checking apparatus will now be described with reference to figure 1. When the lamp 8 is on, it will be started by the usual device provided for the type of lamp used and the discharge current will flow through. the windings 15, 16. When the variable resistor 23 is at its maximum value, the direct current flowing through the winding 24 will be at its minimum, the inductance of the windings 15,16 will be at its maximum and the discharge current of the lamp 8 will also be at its minimum. When the value of resistor 23 is reduced, the direct current flowing through winding 24 is increased, the inductance of windings 15, 16 is reduced and the discharge current of lamp 8 is increased.
It will be noted that the variable resistor 23 can be placed at a point remote from the lamp. 8, so that the discharge current of the lamp 8 can be controlled from any suitable place.
The modified arrangement shown in. FIG. 2 operates in a manner similar to that which is described with reference to FIG. 1. The lamp 8 is started after heating the filaments 9, 10, by establishing contact by means of the switch 32 of the fa - known lesson. In this example, the direct current flowing through winding 24 is derived from the alternating current source through the transformer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
The value of the Current is controlled in the same way by the variable resistor 23. The action of the capacitor 33 for correcting the power factor is well known and does not need to be corrected. be described here.
It will be appreciated that the particular arrangement of the limiting reactance coil depends on the type of gas discharge lamp employed and that elements unknown to the calculation can be easily determined, with the knowledge of the characteristics of the lamp and the nature of the lamp. source of alternating current, by any person skilled in the art.
In the example shown in Figure 2, the lamp 8 may be an 80 watt bandard fluorescent tube having a nominal discharge current of 0.8 amps and a voltage drop of approximately 115 volts between its electrodes in regular operation, In this case the two windings 15 and 16 are of equal size and are arranged to carry a current which is not less than 1.3 amps. Further, for an alternating current source of 220 volts RMS at 50 cycles per second, the core of the reactance coil and winds them;
15,16 cents have dimensions such that, when there is no uni-directional flow in the central branch, the comoined inductance of the 15,16 windings is approximately 0.85 h3nry. The winding 24 has alots of dimensions such that when the direct current passing through the winding 24 is at its average value, the inductance of the windings 15, 16 is approximately 0.8 henry.
In Figure 3, one end of the winding of a limiting reactance coil 3 is connected to terminal 1 and the other end to one end.
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
of the primary winding 5 of a transformer 4.
The other end of the primary winding 5 is connected .la. terminal 2. The transformer 4 has two low voltage secondary windings 6 and 7 connected respectively to the filaments 9 and 10 of a gas discharge lamp 8. One end of the secondary winding 6 is connected to one of the ends of the primary winding 5 and one of the ends of the secondary winding 7 is connected to the other end of the primary winding 5. The primary winding 5 is therefore in parallel with the gas discharge interval of the lamp 8.
The lamp 8 is of the hot-cathode gas discharge type, in which the two filaments 9, 10 are associated with the electrodes and form a part thereof for the gas discharge. Primary winding 5 is wound to provide about 5 volts less than the entire voltage of the power source appearing between terminals 1,2. The reactance coil 3 has the necessary inductance to maintain the discharge current of the lamp 8 at its normal value when connected in series with the lamp 8 in regular operation.
Thus, if the lamp 8 is of the Standard type of 80 watts fluorescent gas discharge, having a voltage difference of about 115 volts between its electrodes and a discharge current of about 0.8 amperes in regular operation and if the source is 220 volts (RMS), the limiting reactance coils 3 will have an inductance of approximately 0.8 henry. In this case, secondary windings 6, 7 will each be balled to provide a supply of the filament of about 8 volts at a current of 0.75 amps.
The transformer 4 can advantageously be a
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
winding autotransformer and in this case the secondary windings 6 and 7 are derived from the primary winding 5 and form part of it.
In the variant shown in FIG. 4, the general arrangement of the reactance coil 3 of the transformer 4 and of the lanpe 8 is similar to that which is described above with reference to FIG. S, except that the two secondary 6, 7, instead of being each connected to one of the ends of the primary winding 5, are each connected to one end of an additional secondary winding 11. The primary winding b is. still effectively in parallel with the gas discharge interval of the lamp 8, since the charge in the secondary circuit of the transformer 4 is reflected in the primary circuit in the well-known manner.
In figure 4, transformer 4 can be provided with another high voltage secondary winding and two other low voltage secondary windings connected to the filaments of a second lamp similar to the one designated 8 in the figure. drawing, so that the tester, can work with the two lamps,
Figure 5 shows a variation of the arrangement shown in Figure 4, in which the primary winding 5 and the secondary winding 11 are connected in series to form a winding autotransformer in which the secondary windings 6,7 are each connected to one end of the series arrangement of the two windings 5,11.
In the arrangements shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the limiting reactance coil 3 can be divided into two parts, each part being connected in one of these lines of the alternating current source.
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
In the arrangements shown in Figures 4 and 5, the separate limiting reactance coil 3 can be dispensed with and the electrical equivalent of its action can be obtained by replacing the transformer 5 with a transformer of the high reactance type.
In figure 6, the primary winding 5 of the transformer 4 is connected directly to the alternating current source at terminals 1, 2. The secondary winding 6 feeds the filament 9 of the gas discharge lamp 8 and the secondary winding 7 feeds the filament 10. There is provided for the lamp 8 a limiting reactance coil with two parts designated respectively by 3 and 3 'in the drawing, the coil being able to be constituted so as to form a single physical unit or otherwise. , As desired. The reactance coil 3 is connected between one end of the primary winding 5 and the circuit associated with the filament 9 of the lamp 8 and the reactance coil 3à is connected between the other end of the primary winding 5 and the circuit associated with the filament 10.
The reactance coil 3 is provided with a secondary winding 12 and the reactance coil 3 'with a secondary winding 13. As regards the effects of the secondary windings 12, 13, the component parts 3, 3 'can be considered transformers. The two secondaries 12, 13 are respectively connected in series one to the secondary 6 and to the filament 9, and the other to the secondary 7 and to the filament 10. The two secondaries 12, 13 are wound up and connected in circuit, so that when the discharge current for the lamp 8 passes through the reactors 3, 3 ', the effects or rates of the coils 12, 13 are equal and opposite to those of the secondary 6, 7.
<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
Figure 7 shows a variant of the tester shown in Figure 6, in which the secondaries 12, 13 of the reactance coils 3, 3 'are dispensed with, and in which the required voltage is derived from the winding of the reactance coil. In this arrangement, the opposition of the two voltage sources in each of the filament circuits is obtained by the correct phaaeing of the secondaries 6, 7.
Figure 8 shows another variant, in which use is made of a single limiting reactance coil 3, this being provided with two secondary windings 12, 13 which are connected in the filament circuits of the lamp 8. in the same way as the corresponding windings shown in figure 6.
A simplified construction for the limiting reactance coil can be achieved by replacing the secondary winding 12 with a suitable branch on the reactor coil winding, as shown in Figure 7, and using the single secondary winding shown. in 13 in the drawing.
The arrangements according to Figures 3 to 8 can be supplemented by a capacitor 14 connected to the main discharge electrodes 9, 10 of the lamp 8. This capacitor 14 serves to suppress radio interference from the lamp circuit and will have a value depending on the particular arrangement employed. A suitable value for the arrangement of Figure 3 is 0.5 # F.
The operation of the checking apparatus will now be described with reference to FIG. 3. If we consider everything from aco rd the apparatus as it is initially, the consumption in watts of the lamp 8 is only. also the watt consumption of the two filaments 9,10.
The current corresponding to this wattage passing through the
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
Reactor coil 3, is so weak that there is only a small voltage drop in reactance coil 3. Almost all of the source voltage appears in primary winding 5.
Thus, one type of gas discharge fluorescent lamp has a normal consumption of 80 watts for the main discharge. The nominal value for the fila- ment, when the usual tester is employed, is 1.3 amps at 10 volts, that is, 26 watts.
With the tester according to the present invention, however, a lower filament temperature, of about 800 ° C, is all that is required for satisfactory operation. Therefore, windings 16 and 7 are wound to provide the filaments with a heating current of 0.75 amps at 8 volts, that is, 6 watts, when the maximum supply voltage of 250 volts is. applied to primary winding 5 of transformer 4.
The load appears as a resistive load in the primary winding 5. When the supply voltage is 250 volts (RMS) the current flowing through the primary winding 5 is, due to this load, approximately. 0.05 amps. The Total Primary Current of Transformer 4 is slightly higher, due to the usual transformer losses, but these are assumed to be negligible for the purpose of this description, This current flowing through the Reactor Coil 3, produces a small Drop of voltage in the inductive reactance of the reactance coil 3 in phase quadrature with respect to that in the primary coil 5.
Almost all of the voltage from the alternating current source appears for this reason in primary winding 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
The two circuits of the filaments of the lamp 8 are connected to the opposite ends of the primary winding 5, so that almost all of the voltage from the source is applied between the electrodes 9, 10 of the lamp. In the example above, this is about 350 volts at the maximum point.
When the current is established in the described tester, a glow discharge occurs between the heated filaments 9,10 as a result of the emission of electrons produced by them. When the. The tra-tail function of the electrodes is reduced to a point at which the peak potential of the source is sufficient to initiate the main discharge, the lamp 8 lights up in the known manner.
During steady operation, the discharge current of the lamp 8 is higher than the current of the filaments during ignition and there is a greater voltage drop in the limiting reactor 3.
The voltage in the primary winding 5 and the voltage appearing between the electrodes 9,10 of the lamp 8 are produced by the voltage drop in the limiting reactance coil 3 to a value considerably lower than that of the voltage of source . After lamp 8 has ignited, the voltage in the primary winding can be considered to be determined solely by the operating characteristics of lampa 8.
In the case of the 80 watt fluorescent gas discharge lamp in question, the maximum voltage across the lamp is about 150 volts. This voltage occurs when the main discharge is exactly reduced to the point of extinction. The voltage drops when
<Desc / Clms Page number 23>
as the discharge is increased and for a nominal discharge current of 0.8 amps, the voltage across the lamp 8 is approximately 115 volts. The voltage in the primary winding 5 is therefore limited to this value, which is approximately equal to half the voltage in the winding during the starting period.
The output voltage of the secondary windings 6, 7 is similarly reduced to one half, and the power consumption of the filaments is reduced to less than a quarter, due to the increased resistance of the filaments when the lamp 8 works.
It will be appreciated that the ignition of the lamp 8 and the reduction of the feed to the filaments 9, 10 both occur automatically and do not require the introduction of any mechanical device in the circuits.
-The modified circuits shown in Figures 4-: and 5 operate in a similar manner. In the arrangement shown in Figure 4, the voltage in the lamp 8, during ignition, is not necessarily the same as that in the primary winding 5, but can be determined, when required, by the voltage. output of the secondary winding 11. In the agency- / shown / ment / in figure 5, the voltage applied in the lamp 8 during ignition is the sum of the voltages in the primary winding 5 and in the second winding !. - re 11. For this reason this arrangement is particularly useful when the type of gas discharge lamp employed requires a high ignition potential.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the power for the filament 9 is provided by the secondary winding 6 and the power for the filament 10 by the secondary winding 7 in a manner identical to that which is. previously described with reference to FIG. 3. In this arrangement, the primary winding 5 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 24>
connected directly to the alternating current source and the full voltage of the source appears between the electrodes of the lamp 8 during ignition. After heating the filaments 9,10, the lamp 8 is started in the ordinary manner.
During normal operation, the discharge current of the lamp 8 is controlled in the manner known by the limiting reactance coils 3, 3 'and the current of. discharge passes through the windings of the two reactance coils.
An electromotive force is induced in the secondary windings 12, 13 and these windings are connected, relative to the secondary windings 6, 7 so as to oppose the output voltage of the latter, respectively. In the preferred case when the vol- tage induced in the secondaries 12, 13 is equal and opposed to the flow rate of the second ires 6,7, the currents supplying the filaments 9,10 are reduced to zero.
The modified circuits shown in Figure 7 and operate in a similar fashion. In the arrangement shown in figure 7, the opposing voltages are obtained, during the regular operation of the lamp 8, deriving the required parts of the total voltages which code in the windings of the reactance coils 3, 3 ' . In the arrangement shown in Figure 8 the opposite voltages are provided by the two secondary windings 12, 13, associated with the single reactance bovine 3.
The arrangements shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5 differ from those shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8, in that in the first arrangements the heating power to the electrodes 9, 10 is reduced by the automatic reduction of the temperature. flow of secondaries 6, 7, while in the last branch-
<Desc / Clms Page number 25>
The flow rate of secondaries 6, 7 is practically the same during start-up and regular operation and that the heating supply of the electrodes, 9, 10 is reduced by the automatic introduction of the opposite voltage in the secondaries 12 13. In addition, in the latter arrangements, the heating supply can be reduced to zero.
In Figure 9, an autotransformer 4 has a primary winding 6, 11, 7 wound to provide almost all of the voltage of the AC source. At each end of the primary winding, parts 6 and 7 of the winding are branched off to form the two secondary windings. The secondary / the / 6 is connected to / filament 9 of the gas discharge lamp 8 and the secondary 7 to the filament 10.
A capacitor 14 with a value of 0.02 # F. is connected to the electrodes of the lamp associated with the two filaments 9,10. One end of the primary of transformer 6, 11, 7 is connected to one of the blades 2 of the alternating current source and the other end is connected to the auto pole 1 of the source by means of a reactance. variable 3.
The variable reactance 3 is a reactance coil having a shell type laminated core, windings 15 and 16 astatically connected and an auxiliary DC winding 24 as previously described. The unidirectional magnetic flux due to this winding 24 is controlled by the variation of a direct current, coming from a local source of direct current 21, 22, passing through the winding 24. This control takes place. by adjusting the variable resistance 23.
The free end of the coil winding 15
<Desc / Clms Page number 26>
The reactance coil is connected to the transformer secondary 6 and the free end of the winding 16 of the ost reactance coil is connected to the pole 1 of the ac source as described.
In figure 10 the primary 5 of the transformer 4 does not include all 1 winding 6, 11, 7, but is derived from it. Secondary windings 6, 7 so, it branched off at the ends of the winding and connected respectively to the filaments 9 and 10 of the lamp 8 as in the circuit arrangement of FIG. 9.
Although the output of the secondaries 6, 7 is the same as for figure 9, the voltage developed in section 11 of the winding, available to start the lamp 8 is increased by the over-voltage action of the transformer. tor 4.
In another embodiment of the invention shown in FIG. 11, the variaole reactance 5 has additional windings 12, 13 each wound on one of the outer branches of the core. The primary winding 5 of the transformer 4 is connected directly to the alternating current source 1, 2. The secondary low-voltage winding 6, is connected in series with the winding 12 of the reactance coil on the filament. 9 of the lamp 8.
The winding 7 is also connected in series with the winding 13 of the reactance coil, on the filament 10. The windings 12 and 13 of the reactance coil are connected in the circuits of the filaments of the lamp. so as to supply an increasing voltage with the discharge current of the lamp, passing through the windings 15, 16 and opposed to the voltage coming from the secondary windings 6 and 7. of the transformer.
The transformer 4 has an additional winding
<Desc / Clms Page number 27>
tional 26 which is connected to a rectifier 25 mounted in bridge, in order to provide a direct current supply for the auxiliary winding 24. The variable resistor 23 is connected in series to this source, as in the circuits shown in figure 9 and in figure 10.
The operation of the other circuit arrangements described with reference to FIG. 9, to FIG. 10 and to FIG. 11, is similar and the differences in detail will be noticed upon examination of the foregoing description of the circuits described with reference to FIG. figs 3-8.
When the direct current flowing through the auxiliary winding 24 of the variable reactance 3 is reduced by increasing the value of the variable resistor 23, the inductance of the reactance 3 is increased and the discharge current of The lamp 8 is reduced.This reduction in the discharge current of the lamp increases the power supply to the filaments 9, 10 of the lamp.In the case of the circuits of figure 9 and figure 10, this results from the increased voltage appearing in primary 5 of the transformer. In the case of the circuit of FIG. 11, this results from the reduction of the opposite voltage in the windings 12, 13 of the reactant coil.
The variable reactance 3 is calculated for the type of lamp 8 employed and for the voltage and frequency of the alternating current source 1, 2, so that by the necessary adjustment of the direct current passing through winding 24, the inductor of the variable reactance 3 can be increased to the point where the main discharge through the lamp 8 is extinguished. When this is the case, the feeding of the filaments 9, 10
<Desc / Clms Page number 28>
is such that by reducing the inductance of the variable reactance 3 once more, the lamp 8 can be immediately turned back on - Slow and the discharge current, and hence the brightness of the lamp 8 increased at will, up to 'to its maximum operating state.
In the forms of testing apparatus described with reference to FIGS. 9, 10 and 11, the variable reactance employed is a reactance coil of which the value of the inductance is varied by means of a direct current passing through a secondary winding. This form lends itself easily to remote control, but it will be appreciated that other forms of variaole reactance, although not necessarily offering the advantage of remote control, can nevertheless be employed for the standby and the shutdown. re-ignition of the lamp. dump. Likewise, use can be made of a variable resistor in circuits similar to those which are described with reference to Figures 9 and 10, that is to say those which do not require volts induced by the variable reactance in the cirouits of the filaments of the lamp.
In normal practice, a lamp of the type described is mounted in a metal trough reflector or other metal fitting. The metal trim is earthed, and this has been found to aid rapid ignition of the lamp. In the case of the monitoring apparatus according to the present invention it is particularly desirable that the gas discharge lamp be enclosed in a metal fitting arranged in this way.
