 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     @   A simple titre d'exemple, sans aucun caractère li- mitatif, des exécutions ,sont 'schématisées aux dessins annexés, dans   lesquels:   les figures 1 et 2 schématisent très sommairement une disposition à axes concentriques; la figure 3 est une coupe transversale par un appa- reil appliquant les éléments schématisés aux figures 1 et 2;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  "Hydraulic speed variator and transmitter device"
The invention relates to a device for the transmission and / or variation of the speed between a motor or driving device in principle any and a driven device also in principle any. The aim of this device is to produce an apparatus reducing to the strict minimum the moving parts and, consequently, the passive resistances and all the consequences which result therefrom.

   The device, object of the invention, virtually eliminates any mechanical connection member between the driving elements and the driven elements. It allows the transmitted power to be varied independently of the resistive torque and to adjust this power as a function of said resistive torque.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The mechanical connecting members are systematically replaced by a fluid reputed to be incompressible and this fluid is arranged in the closed enclosure in which it works in such a way that its volume is maintained practically constant whatever the power transmitted and the gear ratio in a given device.

   Transmitting devices are known, respectively hydraulic speed variators exploiting variations in centrifugal force. We also know devices contributing to the same end, in which the effects of a variable pump are used. These devices are generally not very popular in current applications using transmitters and mechanical speed controllers. This is probably due to the precarious yields observed, to the complexity of the organs involved and above all to the design errors which are also observed in the examination of numerous previous patents.

   The device of the present invention is opposed to cesmeans known by a simple and compact embodiment forming a complete device in itself without external circulation of fluid and offering flexibility. particularly appreciable operation.

   This transmitting and / or speed variator device is essentially characterized by the fact that in a completely closed chamber filled with a supposedly incompressible fluid, the volume of which therefore remains practically constant, a driving rotor, positively controlled by the means, turns. motor and a driven rotor. Both rotors have radially walls

 movable and at least one of the rotors is transversely movable vary '(t> t <Át / A ûn 30rto to make / in a controllable manner the stream of fluid Á said fluid acting effectively stressing and rotating the driven rotor, from such that the speed of rotation of the latter depends directly on the law of motion of said stream of acting fluid.

   (In other words, one can understand the functional principle of the device of the invention, considering

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 As the fluid actually acting, positively displaced by the vanes of the driving rotor, is caused to urge the vanes of the driven rotor through passages of variable section, the speed of passage of the fluid being approximately inverting proportional to the cross section of this passage, so that the speed of the fluid increasing or decreasing, the rotation of the driven rotor shows the same variations in linear speed, which forms the basis of the speed variator proper between the motor elements and the receiving elements. Sum,

     the enclosure or casing is fully closed and the fluid thus works in closed vessels and in a closed cycle, at the same time extreme simplicity is achieved, maximum operating safety.

   One can obviously conceive of the application of this new conception in very different constructive forms having regard to the variants which may occur in particular and inter alia in the relative position of the driving and driven axes; in the conformation of the rotors; the mechanical and electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic means for moving the members capable of modifying the speed ratio and, in general, in the very design of the whole of the apparatus forming an application of the device. 'invention.

   The driving and driven axes, while being parallel, can be. distant from one another or concentric, which makes it possible to produce devices of various types, perfectly suited to the applications which use them, the concentric arrangement of. axes, however, leading to remarkable compactness.

     @ By way of example, without any limiting character, the executions are shown diagrammatically in the appended drawings, in which: FIGS. 1 and 2 very briefly diagram an arrangement with concentric axes; Figure 3 is a cross section through an apparatus applying the elements shown schematically in Figures 1 and 2;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 FIG. 4 is a radial section through the device of the. figure 3; FIG. 5 is a cross section through an embodiment of the same device; FIG. 6 is a radial section of the device of FIG. 5.

   Figures 1 and 2 schematically show the basic principles of the design of the device of the invention.

  Indeed, if we consider a driving rotor 1 comprising a certain number of radially movable vanes; a receiving or driven rotor 3 also having radially movable vanes 4; if the pallets are made to be guided by a raceway 5 and that the pallets ¯4 are guided by a raceway .6. and that these two raceways 5 and 6 are eccentric by. compared to their respective rotor, it is realized that when the rotors move in a rotational movement; their respective vanes move in a reciprocating radial motion with respect to their respective rotors.

   By modifying the relative position of one rotor with respect to the other - by displacing the axis of at least one of the two rotors transversely - the conformation of the annular space between the two rotors is modified. . in fact, if we consider the position of FIG. 1, we notice that the two rotors 1 and 3 have the same center of rotation o, that is to say due to the two axes coinciding. The annular space 7 has a constant cross section a-b over its entire length.

   A fixed wall partially limits the annular chamber 7 over an arc length separating two neighboring vanes get a second wall 9 opposite - to the first limit similarly partly the annulus chamber 7 to the right of the lower zone of the rotor 3¯ between two pallets 4 @, It will therefore be noted, in the position of FIG. 1, for example, that between the pallet.?. driven by the 'rotor 1 and the vane 4' driving the rotor-3, a certain quantity of
 EMI4.1
 fluid, usually oil. This stream of fluid is ref ov- :: Jar u - 4 - "'-' lée, / the pallet and in turn pushes the pallet .4.:., Which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 drives rotor 3.

   The marna process is interposed between the other pallets. As a result, by the positively controlled rotation of the motor rotor 1, the rotation of the driven rotor ¯3 is caused.

    Since the fluid passages cd and ef have a constant section at all points, the speed of the fluid is kept constant and the driven rotor rotates at the same speed as the driving rotor, the latter being empty and the friction being constant. If we now consider the position of Figure 2, we notice that the rotor 1 has been moved so as to present a certain eccenticity relative to the rotor 3. The result is that the annular passage 7 has a section progressively decreasing from its lower point to its upper point.

  The law of motion of the vanes 4 has remained the same, but the radial displacements of the vanes ?, are such that their projecting parts, that is to say those which are actually stressed by the fluid, are reduced. On the other hand, the part of the acting fluid moving in the closed enclosure is decreased and is forced to pass through a gradually decreasing passage, so that its speed is gradually slowed down in the annular chamber 7. As it is. is the moving fluid which directly drives the receiving rotor 3, the latter will see its speed adopt the fluid displacement regime. On the other hand, in the lower part of the chamber 7, a two-pass 10 deflects part of the fluid outside the effective action of the drive vanes.

   It follows that one can rationally combine the eccentricity e, the velocity acquired by the fluid and the relative surfaces between the visible part of the driving vanes and the receiving vanes to determine in advance the characteristics of the apparatus and more. particularly the limits of speed ratios and transmissible powers.

   Figures 3 and 4 reproduce approximately the elements of these two diagrams. It contains all the aforementioned elements, this arrangement being nevertheless schematic and capable of being supplemented by all the accessories generally whatever.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 shells belonging to general mechanics.

   Finally, FIGS. 5 and 6 show schematically an arrangement particularly intended for applications requiring a compact arrangement and above all great flexibility of operation. The apparatus combines the motor and receiver rotors, as well as a mechanical means to vary. the gear ratio. In this case, the outer casing Il¯ participates in the driven shaft 12 and by its rotating mass is capable of acting as a flywheel ot thus balancing the modulations of the law of motion of the fluid in the device.

   The axis 13 of the driving rotor is terminated at one end by an eccentric coupling element engaged in a female element li integral with a hollow shaft section 16 capable of being maneuvered by an adjustment lever 16. ' By moving the latter angularly, one causes the rotation of the hollow axis 15 and a displacement of the axis 13, which drives the generaturn rotor 1 whose eccentricity with respect to the driven rotor increases or decreases according to the direction of the operation of said lever 16. It is noted that the complete apparatus is at the same time simple, robust and of an extremely small footprint.

   It obviously constitutes a simple example of application, without any limiting nature.

   Cn can thus multiply the embodiments, so that the device in itself consists essentially of the arrangement of a constant mass of fluid in a closed room interposed between a driven rotor and a driven rotor with the conditions. tions that of this mass of fluid only a part is active; that this acting fiasse is variable in quantity and speed and that, forming the only link between the driving rotor and the driven rotor, the speed of the latter depends solely and directly on the conditions of said acting fluid.

   It goes without saying that it is possible to produce devices applying this process practically for any power, for any speed and for all applications where the transmission and the variation of a speed must be done in a progressive manner.
