   La figure 1 est relative à l'application de l'in- vention selon un de ses modes particuliers, à une ligne de transmission bifilaire;
La figure 2 est relative à un mode d'application de l'invention à un câble coaxial;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   Un collier de serrage analogue peut être employé à l'extrémité des autres câbles, pour assurer la facilité de leur rempiacement;

  PERFECTION IN ELECTRICAL TEST SYSTEMS
The present invention relates to improvements to electrical test systems and, in particular, to devices for measuring the electrical characteristics, such as the impedances, of electrical equipment. For example, the invention provides means for measuring the electrical length of the transmission lines.

   Until now, the length of a transmission line or cable, as a function of the wavelength of the high frequency energy transmitted over the line, has been determined by locating the nodes and bellies. standing waves on the line, with a voltmeter. A movable electrode connected to the measuring device was moved along the line and the posi-

 tion of maxima, and des'minima, after which the distances were determined by means of a length measuring device.

   In addition to the electrical disadvantage of touching a high frequency line with a movable electrode, the equipment had to be portable and this method was inconvenient, slow and did not adapt well to fast braiding of cables and cables. lines, at the factory.

   A particular object of the invention is the constitution of improved means for measuring circuit impedances.

   More particularly, one of the objects of the invention is an apparatus for testing fixed-station transmission lines and, however, easy to operate and capable of adapting to the rapid tests necessary for the manufacture of the lines.

   The test system provided in accordance with one of the characteristics of the invention essentially comprises a calibrated impedance, capable of being tuned and connected to the input terminals of the line, or of the similar apparatus, in tests, the tuning of said impedance being intended to obtain a resonant parallel with the impedance of the line under test.

   A stable fixed frequency generator is connected to - said input terminals and, through a resonant line. a voltmeter is connected to the resonance line under test, at a point a quarter wavelength from the input, in order to indicate when parallel resonance is obtained. The tunable impedance can therefore be calibrated as a function of the wavelength of the line under test. Additionally, or alternatively, the calibration can be done based on the reactance values, to facilitate the attachment of suitably matched couplings to the ends of the line.

   The invention will be better understood on reading the following description and examining the accompanying drawings which schematically represent, by way of nonlimiting examples, the application.

 cation of said invention.

   FIG. 1 relates to the application of the invention according to one of its particular modes, to a two-wire transmission line;
FIG. 2 relates to an embodiment of the invention to a coaxial cable;
A transmission line to be tested is shown at 1, in FIG. 1. It can comprise two parallel wires insulated by the air and having all the characteristic impedances and desired attenuation constants. The line shown is open circuit at its end and we want to precisely determine its length, as a function of the wavelength #, or as a function of the impedance Z.

   A variable impedance 2, which can be conveniently constituted by a section of line, or. A line accessible by means of a start-up slider 3, sliding along the line by means of a rack drive 4, is connected to the input terminals of the line under test. The length of said section of line is adjustable, for example from 1/4 to 3/4 / \, and, therefore, it can be adjusted with a view to obtaining a parallel resonance with any length of line under test. That is, ,, for a voltage wave of length? \ -, applied to the input of line 1, the apparent impedance at the input can be set to the maximum, whatever the magnitude and the sign of the reactances of the sections and of the line.

   The wave is supplied by a generator 5, at stabilized constant frequency, connected to the input of line 1 through a resonant line G, the output of the generator and the two wires of the line being, preferably, balanced. with respect to earth, A-voltmeter 7 is connected across the resonant line, at a point an odd number of quarters of the input wavelength, when line 1 ends in open circuit. Three quarters (3/4) # is a space

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 suitable for very high frequencies.

   When the far end of the input, or of the generator, of a line with self-inductance and distributed capacitance is in open circuit, the distribution of the potential along the line is beautiful that said po- tential falls to minimum values at points an odd number of quarter wavelengths from said far end. The output of the resonant line G is connected to the combined inputs of lines 1 and 2 and, for the parallel resonance of said lines, the load impedance applied to line 6 is large.

   Assume that line 1 under test is slightly longer than a quarter wavelength, of odd or even order, and set cursor 0 on line 2 at a distance slightly less than one. quarter-wave, the resulting minimum or zero voltmeter indication7 shows exactly when the correct cursor position is obtained.

  The deviation of said cursor from its quarter-wavelength distance on line 2 is a direct measurement of the length of the line under test, as a function of wavelength 1 \ .. If we de-point it - sire. during calibration, the amplitude of the voltage minima which are proportional to the losses of the line can be plotted on the voltmeter scale.

   The testing apparatus according to certain characteristics of the invention is also applicable to transmission cables of the coaxial type. In parallel with the entry of the cable 11 to be tested, a short-circuited coaxial line 12 is shown, preferably adjustable by means of a rack 14, similar to the rack 4 of FIG. 1 and calibrated in function. - tion of wavelength #. line 12 is given a length approximately equal to that of line 11, so that it is adapted not only to the reactance of said line 11, but also to its losses. The generator 15 applies waves of length # to the input of the parallel cables 11 and 12.

   A resonant line 16, an odd number of a quarter wavelength long, is also connected

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 at the cable entry terminals. As in figure 1, we adjust the impedance of the adjustable short-circuited line so as to obtain the reson-ance parallel with the line under test and the resulting maximum resistance is evidenced by a minimum voltage. at the "voltmeter" end of the quarter-wave resonant line 16. The length of the short-circuited line is then an indication relative to the transmission line. In order to facilitate the connection of the cables under test to the test apparatus, a threaded collar, or the like 18, can be used to mechanically and electrically clamp the cable on line 16.

   A similar clamp can be used at the end of other cables, to ensure ease of replacement;
Although the test apparatus according to certain features of the invention has been described in connection with open circuit transmission lines, it is evident that it is also applicable to short-circuited lines at their far end. In the latter case, the standing waves are shifted by 90.

   The test apparatus conforming to certain characteristics of the invention is of simple construction, easy to operate and it adapts to precise measurements of the electrical characteristics of the transmission lines.
