 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Suivantune autre caractéristiquede l'invention le chauffage est'réalisé au moyen de courantsà haute   fréquence;   de la sorte, au chauffage par convection et pas conduction s'ajoute le chauffage par rayons induits;

  "Electric resistance oven for high temperatures."
In order to obtain high temperatures in electric resistance furnaces, in the absence of electric conductors whose melting point would be higher than that which one wishes to reach, it has already been proposed to use metals in the liquid state, but no satisfactory industrial performance has ever been obtained from this kind.

   This weakness of the utility yield results, in large part, from the fact that the metals in the liquid state have been used in the open air or in any case - with insufficient protection against oxidation, which causes - a disintegration by chemical transformation.

   It has also been proposed to use the metals in the form of coated coils in refractory materials intended to maintain them when they are in the liquid state, but the results obtained have been generally disappointing, no doubt because the refractories. used were permeable to air and the molten metal oxidized quickly.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The present invention relates to an electric resistance furnace for high temperature in which filiform metallic electric resistances in the liquid state are used, maintained in a sheath of refractory material with a high melting point which retains their shape. desired, for example that of a coil, characterized in that this sheath is constituted by a tube of refractory material impermeable to air.

   This is how results. Excellent results have been obtained by using a sheath constituted by a tube of soapstone, and better still, in obtaining higher temperatures by a tube of vitreous silica.

   This refractory material tube is protected --from breaks and deformations by a coating of refractory material with a very melting point. such as powdered aluminum or silica oxide. The whole is surrounded by a mass of refractory material, with a very high 'melting point', which can also be aluminum oxide or silica powder.

   The deformations, under the inaction of the heat, of the parts of this assembly having different coefficients of expansion are liable to produce ruptures, in particular when the conductive metal melts. To avoid this danger, we take the precaution of heating the assembly beforehand by means of an additional chromium-nickel resistor, for example, and of only passing the main current through the conductive metal. 'a- near merger of the latter. ,
According to another characteristic of the invention the heating is carried out by means of high frequency currents; in this way, heating by convection and not conduction is added to heating by induced rays;

   a tin electrode is particularly advantageous for this purpose due to the fact that it offers only low 'ohmic' resistance to oscillating currents

  For this purpose there can be provided an apule "b, each end of the quartz tube and another, cup communicating with the middle part of the aforementioned tube, by a section 'complementary to said tube and means, -which can be pneumatic, to drive out the molten metal contained in this third cup of
