    BREVET   D'INVENTION.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Toujours selon l'invention, l'installation comporte, en correspondance du dispositif d'alimentation ou de chacun de ces dispositifs, un conduit d'alimentation situé extérieurement à la cavité du four, une extrémité du dit conduit ou de chacun des conduits d'alimentation étant en communication avec la dite cavité;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

La figure 1 est une coupe verticale;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

    PATENT.

  IMPROVEMENTS IN VERTICAL OVENS OF TYPE.A TUYERES.

   The present invention relates to vertical furnaces with closed-type tuyeres, this term being understood in the sense that during all the operations inherent in the operation of the furnace, including the loading of materials into the cavity of the furnace, said cavity is located. sealed against any penetration of atmospheric air operating other than through the nozzles, and generally remains at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure.

     The furnaces of the type in question comprise a crucible in the form of a well and shelves, a vessel in which the charge is poured and conveyed to the melting zone, and nozzles arranged around the crucible. , forcibly injecting blast air into the oven cavity.

   Existing models of the type in question make use of feed devices discharging the feed materials from the top of the tank, which continue their descent therein.

  These feed devices are, by the interposition of the thickness of the load below them, protected to some extent from the hot gases.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 hearth as well as heat irradiation from the crucible.

  The fact remains that their operation takes place under difficult conditions and that these devices remain exposed to multiple damages deriving from their heating or their warping by the effect of heat, in particular cases where the temperature of the oven is found to exceed that normally encountered in ovens of this type.

   The present invention relates to, among others. to create means of supply which are not subject to damage caused by the heat of the combustion gases or by the irradiation of heat, or in any case not to the same extent as the supply devices are currently encountered in furnaces of the type in question, and in particular feed means which are particularly suitable for use in furnaces of the nozzle type in which temperatures above normal are encountered.

   Another object of the present invention is to provide supply means applicable to a furnace of the nozzle type operating with a load of materials which, for the reasons explained in the remainder of this description, has a very reduced thickness. comparison of the filler thickness hitherto used.

   According to the present invention, said feed means are arranged so as to discharge the load materials laterally into the cavity of the furnace, and said feed means ensure by their arrangement the continuous sealing of the cavity of the furnace. with respect to the atmosphere, to the mouth or to the supply mouths.

   Also according to the invention, said lateral feed means are constituted by a mechanical feed device or by a series of mechanical feed devices, which, or each of which, being designed to convey into the cavity of the furnace the filler materials, is also produced and positioned in such a way that throughout the duration of operation of the furnace, a protective mass constituted by the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 charging material remains constantly interposed between said feed device and said furnace cavity.

   The installation will preferably include a plurality of feed devices arranged symmetrically around the vessel of the furnace, each of these devices being designed to introduce the feed materials therein at a feed rate equal to that developed by the furnace. other or by each of the other feeding devices,
Still according to the invention, the installation comprises, in correspondence of the supply device or of each of these devices, a supply duct located outside the cavity of the oven, one end of said duct or of each of the ducts. power supply being in communication with said cavity;

   the feed device or each of the feed devices being arranged so as to convey the feed materials through the conduit which corresponds to it to the internal cavity of the furnace - at least part of the protective mass constituted by the charge materials being contained within this supply duct or each of the supply ducts.

   Said conduit or each of said conduits may be constituted by a supply pipe containing the supply device or one of the supply devices. Said supply conduit or pipe or each of said supply conduits or pipes is oriented towards the tank at an upward inclination angle, so that the protective mass constituted by the load materials is maintained by gravity inside the conduit to the supply pipe, throughout the operation of the lathe.

   The preferred feed device according to the present invention comprises a feed screw, this mechanism combining the simplicity and ease of assembly and operation with the advantage of allowing a continuous introduction of the feed materials into the cavity of the furnace.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   If more than one feeder is available, each is suitably served by a separate external hopper. In order to reduce the possibilities of penetration of the combustion gases from the furnace through the mass of the feed materials to gain the atmosphere, it is possible to maintain in the hopper or in each of the feed hoppers a gas pressure greater than that prevailing. in the oven cavity.

   Certain common ores have a tendency to form a compact vault in the furnace vessel and to agglomerate in a plastic mass opposing the downward movement of the charge materials as well as the upward movement of the blowing gases. The author of the present invention has been able to establish that this tendency disappears if the thickness of the charge is significantly reduced compared to that ordinarily encountered in blast furnace practice. This reduced thickness can be defined as substantially equal, starting from the level of the nozzles, to. twice the diameter of the crucible at the nozzles. In practice, the load thus reduced is found to be such that its upper level is hardly raised above the melting zone, so that the addition of the load materials takes place at a short distance from this zone. .

   The present invention therefore includes an arrangement of the feed members by which the discharge of the feed materials takes place near the melting zone. More precisely, these feed means are arranged so as to discharge the feed materials into the cavity of the furnace at a level situated above the nozzles, the height of which is substantially equal to twice the diameter of the crucible at the level of the nozzles.

   In the previous course of this description, the supply means included in the present invention have appeared to be particularly suitable for application in nozzle furnaces, the internal temperature of which would substantially exceed those commonly encountered in this type of furnace. In the course of the development which follows, the author of the present invention

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 proposes to indicate the means for achieving such a temperature rise; a furnace making use of these means, together with the features previously described, will prove to be of satisfactory application in the treatment of ores normally requiring the highest temperatures mentioned above.

   In particular such a combination may find successful application in the processing of ores which, besides requiring such higher temperatures, exhibit the previously noted tendency to form a compact arch in the interior of the vessel. As an example of this type of ores, mention may be made of ores with a low content of chrism, in which a furnace comprising the combinations of the means indicated above appears particularly suitable for carrying out the reduction.

   The method proposed by the inventor with a view to achieving such a rise in temperature consists in bringing the jet issuing from the blower to a temperature higher than that economically achievable in blast furnaces of the usual type. It is known that the temperature which can be achieved inside a furnace is a function of the temperature of the jet from the blower, and normal blast furnace practice is therefore to raise the temperature of the jet. blowing by temperature exchange with the burnt gases.

   Such heating of the blast air, however, is only possible to a certain extent, limited by the thermal content of the flue gases as well as by the amount of heat which it is economically possible to transfer to the exhaust air. blowing at the speed at which the latter circulates in the heat exchanger. If the internal temperature of the furnace resulting from this heat transfer proves to be adequate to achieve the objectives pursued in the normal use of blast furnaces, this temperature remains insufficient to effect the reduction of the minerals indicated during of the previous paragraph.

   The author of the present invention proposes to raise the temperature of the blowing air to a level higher than that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 economically feasible by normal heat exchange means, by burning said air concurrently with a suitable fuel. To this end, the present invention provides for the production of a furnace comprising the features described above as well as the presence of means ensuring the combustion of a suitable fuel inside the blowing pipe leading to the furnace.

   These combustion means preferably consist of one or more burners for liquid fuel arranged inside said air duct.

   This air will preferably be subjected to preheating prior to its combustion, the most adequate and economical means for this reheating consisting in using the heat contained in the burnt gases. It follows that these preheating means will consist of a method of construction of said air duct having the effect of putting the air flowing in it in a heat exchange ratio with the burnt gases coming from the furnace, and this previously the passage of said blowing air through the combustion device of said burner or of said burners.

   In blast furnaces of normal construction, the load of materials to be treated undergoes chemical transformations during its gradual descent along the vessel in the direction of the melting zone.

   In a furnace produced according to the invention, said charge, after its arrival in the cavity of the furnace, reaches this melting zone much earlier than is the case in blast furnaces of the ordinary type; nevertheless, the higher temperatures which it is possible to achieve in the type of furnace which is the object of the present invention has the effect of accelerating these chemical transformations to an extent which enables them to reach their completion or all. at least one point of transformation sufficiently advanced for the practical objective which one proposes, during the brief period of the passage of the load in direction

 of the fusion zone and its entry into it.

   In the attached drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical section;
Figure II is a sectional elevation along the line
II-II of figure I, and
Figure III is a sectional plan taken along the line III-III of Figure I.

   The furnace shown in the drawings corresponds, for its lower part, to the type of blast furnace of normal construction, which has the advantage of allowing high local temperatures to be achieved by combustion of coke or similar inexpensive fuels; this amounts to saying that it comprises a crucible in the form of a well 3 and displays 3 equipped with nozzles 4 arranged so as to inject blowing air towards the interior of the crucible 2, hence this blowing air flows vertically through the showers 3 into the cavity 5 of the tank 5a; and comprising means for extracting the casting which assembles at the bottom of the crucible, these means being constituted by tap holes 6 and 7 provided respectively for the slag and for the metal.

   Feed openings 8, four in number arranged symmetrically around the tank 5a, are arranged in the vicinity of the junction of the shelves 3 with the tank 5a, and more precisely at a distance above the level of the nozzles. 4 approximately equal to twice the diameter "d" of crucible 2.

   A feed pipe 9 communicating respectively with each of the openings 8, has an upward inclination in the direction of the tank 5a. At its outer end 10, said feed pipe is in communication with the lower part 11 of the external feed hopper 12, one of these hoppers being provided for each of the feed pipes.

   A feed screw 13 is mounted so as to be able to rotate inside each of said feed pipes.
9, being disposed relative to said pipe so that part of the pipe cavity, that adjacent to the tank, is in

 able to contain a protective mass of filler material 14a, The upward inclination of the supply pipe in the direction of the tank 5a ensures that said protective mass of filler materials 14a is held by gravity to the inside the supply pipe 9, throughout the duration of the operation of the oven.

   The protective mass 14a formed by the filler materials, together with the materials contained in the lower part of the hopper 11 as well as in the hopper 12 itself, has the effect of separating the cavity of the furnace from the atmosphere; this same protective mass also serves to protect the feed screw 13 against the heat of the combustion gases as well as the irradiation of heat coming from the interior of the furnace. The protection of the feed screws 13 also participates in the presence of a bench 14b, formed by the feed materials, which forms inside the oven cavity, at the outlet of the feed openings 8 and in their surroundings.

   Each of the feed screws 13 is operated by a worm gear 15, which is itself set in motion by bevel gears 16, 17, in which the pinions 17 are mounted on the shafts 18 operated at equal speed. by any suitable motive force, represented for example by an electric motor 19 equipped with a speed regulator 20.

   The feed screws 13 are all of equal size so that, being driven at an equal speed, the flow rate of the feed materials which they discharge into the furnace remains constant, thus ensuring the mass of the materials. charge 14, 14b an accumulation substantially symmetrical with respect to the axis AA of the tank.

   As has been said previously, the feed openings 8 are arranged in the vicinity of the junction between the tank 5a and the shelves 3, discharging at this level the load materials into the cavity of the furnace. fusion zone 14c, the upper limit of which may be indicated approximately by the dotted line 14d.

   The reduction in thickness obtained thereby in the mass of the filler materials has the effect of bringing the latter into the melting zone much earlier than if its discharge took place through the top of the tank 5a, as is the case. in the hitherto known types of blast furnaces. In the case where the load is made up of materials having a tendency to form an arch inside the tank, said load enters the melting zone before having been able to form a bridge supporting itself.

   Said feed screws can be provided with water jackets 21.

   The gases escaping from the tank 5a by its top 22 are conveyed through the pipe 23 to a recuperator 24 before being evacuated therefrom through the exhaust ports 25. The blowing air enters the recuperator via the openings inlet '26, the air which is reheated there then reaching, through duct 27, the wind duct 28 from where it passes to nozzles 4.

   Inside said pipe 27 is disposed a battery of burners 29 connected to a common pipe 30 which puts them in communication with a fuel source, preferably consisting of a pressurized fuel oil, an adjustment valve 31 being inserted in line 30 in order to allow an adequate adjustment of the quantity of oil sent to the burners 29.

   The oil used in the burners must be of a type which allows it to ignite on contact with the blowing air brought to a high temperature by its passage through the recuperator 24, thus eliminating the use of any specific ignition means.

   During the use of the fuel, the latter is injected in the form of fine particles into the blowing air current passing through the pipe 27 and brought to high temperature beforehand by its paging through the recuperator 24. L oil ignites and burns in the blowing air, which it raises.

 thus the temperature at the point necessary to determine in the interior of the furnace the temperature required for the melting of the ore being processed; this temperature rise being adjustable by means of the valve 31 making it possible to adjust the admission of oil into the pipe 27. The high temperature gas resulting from this combustion is then introduced into the cavity of the furnace 5 through the nozzles 4.

   Appropriate means are provided to seal the hoppers 12 against the atmosphere permanently and also during the supply of the hoppers with feed materials. These means are constituted, for each of the hoppers, by a drum 34 capable of rotation around its axis and mounted inside the upper part 33 of the hopper, said upper part 33 being shaped so as to match the shape of the drum. to form with the latter a seal against any passage of air between the drum and the walls of the hopper during the rotation of the drum.

   Said drum has an axial slot 34 through which the materials are introduced into the drum and through which also these same load materials are discharged into the hopper 12, by gravity, when said drum has made a half turn.

   Said means ensuring the sealing of the hoppers 12 relative to the atmosphere also have the effect of preventing the escape into the atmosphere of any gas coming from the interior of the furnace and having been able to penetrate through it. the feed pipes 9 in the hoppers; for the same purpose, the installation may also include additional means constituted, for example, by a blower 35 allowing, via the conduits 36, to maintain in the hoppers 12 an internal pressure slightly greater than that prevailing in oven cavity 5,
