<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. reproduit partiellement fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements to pressurized fluid extinguisher heads.
The invention relates to pressurized fluid extinguishers, and more especially, but not only, to those in which the extinguishing fluid consists of carbon dioxide stored in the liquid state. We know that this liquid, suddenly relaxed in suitable nozzles, turns into very fine snow which has a very high extinguishing power.
The devices of the type in question must be provided with a tap or valve device allowing very rapid opening of the fluid outlet pipe, but ensuring absolute sealing at rest. A solution often used to satisfy these conditions in spite of the high pressure, consists in ensuring the closure by a relatively thin cover and in providing a hollow bit to cut said cover at the time of commissioning, even if it means providing auxiliary means for providing the force necessary to maneuver the bit against the internal pressure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is in particular well known in the art to ensure the operation of the bit by a piston device actuated by a bypass of the pressurized fluid, bypass controlled by a tap or secondary valve, easy to actuate by hand.
The head forming the object of the invention is particularly remarkable in that it comprises an auxiliary cap, of very small diameter, with a corresponding perforating bit, said cap controlling a pipe bringing the pressurized fluid behind a piston. actuation of the trephine corresponding to the main cap.
Another characteristic of the head according to the invention resides in that the actuating piston of the main bit discovers in its stroke the outlet of the fluid and is provided with an automatic valve, so that the fluid coming from the auxiliary seal cannot pass through the piston, but escapes freely through the outlet orifice with the fluid coming from the main seal as soon as said piston has finished its stroke.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it possible to better understand the invention, the characteristics or it exhibits and the advantages which it is likely to provide.
Fig. 1 is a general longitudinal section of a head established in accordance with the invention, in the rest position.
Fig. partially reproduced fig. 1, but showing the parts after the auxiliary seal has been perforated.
Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section of an alternative embodiment.
In fig. 1 the head comprises a body 1 provided with a tail which is screwed onto the bottle containing the extinguishing fluid under pressure, a fluid that will be assumed to be liquefied carbon dioxide to fix ideas and because this is the case more particularly covered by the invention. From the tail 1a rises an internal pipe 1b sealed off by a cover 2 clamped in place by a crown 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the axis of the pipe 1b and above the latter, the body 1 is hollowed out with a cylindrical bore 1c forming a cylinder for a piston 4 to which is coupled a drill bit 5 suitable for perforating the cover 2. The piston 4 is hollow, its central part forming a chamber 4 @ in the form of a dome open downwards and closed upwards. The chamber 4a contains a ball 6 which normally comes to rest on the upper end of the bit 5 of which it closes the internal bore.
Lateral orifices 4b are made in the side wall of the chamber 4a to make it communicate with the space situated above the piston 4. The upper opening of the bore 1c is closed by a plug 7. The bottom of the said bore, on the other hand, communicates with the outside via a vent hole ld.
From the pipe 1b starts a small channel the whose outlet is closed by an auxiliary cap 8, of much smaller diameter than that of the cap 2. This cap 8 is clamped in place by a ring 9 in which is engaged a small trephine 10 made in the form of an insulated hollow needle. The axis of the cover 8 and of the auxiliary needle or trephine 10 is horizontal.
Opposite the end of the needle 10 opposite to the cap 8 is disposed a pusher 11 which slidably passes through a cap 12 screwed at the end of a cylindrical extension lf of the body 1, the said extension lf forming a sort of chamber 1g suitable for collecting carbon dioxide from the channel when the cover 8 has been perforated. The pusher 11 is provided with an external actuating head 13, pushed back by a return spring 14, and it is provided with an internal shoulder 15 forming a stop against the cap 12.
From chamber 1g runs a canal 1h which opens out into the bore 1g towards the top of the latter.
The body 1 further comprises an outlet pipe which opens into the bore 1c. appreciably towards the middle of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
height of it. This tubing is located in front of the section plane of FIG. 1. It is therefore not visible but the position of its orifice 1j has been indicated in the drawing.
. ,, the rest position the piston 4 is at the top of its stroke. It is held there by friction. Even if these were insufficient for some reason, said piston could only descend a very small amount, the bit 5 abutting against the cover 3 which stops it. Either way, the orifice lj is covered by the piston 4 so that the top of the bore 1c is isolated from the outside.
If the head 13 is pressed, the pusher 11 pushes back the hollow needle 10 which, acting like a trephine, perforates the auxiliary cover 8. Due to the very small section of the latter, this operation requires only a very reduced effort despite the high pressure prevailing in channel le (pressure of liquefied carbon dioxide at ambient temperature, ie 20 to 30 kg / cm2). Following this perforation, the carbon dioxide flows into the top of the bore 1c through the chamber lg and the channel lh. It suddenly pushes the piston 4 downwards, the air present at the bottom of the said bore 1c escaping through the vent hole 1d. The piston 4 drives the bit 5 which perforates the cover at the same time as the exit orifice lj is discovered.
The carbon dioxide then escapes freely through the axial channel of the bit 5 by lifting the ball 6 and passing through the orifices 4b.
Fig. 2 shows the position of the needle 10 when it has perforated the cover 8 and the pusher 11 has been recalled both by the spring 14 and by the sudden arrival of pressurized fluid in the chamber 1g. the shoulder 15 then forming a seal to avoid any appreciable leakage due to the clearance existing between said pusher 11 and its guide in the cap 12. FIG. 3, which further indicates a variant in the detail of the actuation of the needle 11, shows the position of the piston 4, of the bit 5 and of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
orifice 1j when said piston 4 has reached the end of its stroke.
The head according to fig. 1 further comprises a filling device consisting of a lateral pipe lk into which is screwed a hollow screw 15 with a bore of two diameters, enclosing a ball 16 which forms a filling valve with tightness if not absolute, at least sufficient to allow the disassembly of the filling pipe and screwing in place of a cap 17 with gasket 18 ensuring the absolutely essential sealing.
The actuation of the needle 10 can moreover be effected not only by hand, but also by means of an auxiliary force, such as that resulting from pressure. This is the case shown in the variant of FIG. 3 where the pusher 11 is carried by an auxiliary piston 18 which can be pushed back by means of a pressure introduced into the cap 12 'provided for this purpose with a suitable intake manifold. The auxiliary pressure can, for example, be produced by the combustion of a small charge of fusing powder in an enclosed space.
In all cases, the carbon dioxide is always enclosed in a perfectly sealed manner, without the use of taps or valves liable to leak.
It should also be understood that the foregoing description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention, from which one would not depart by replacing the details of execution described by all other equivalents.
