<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
fig.2.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Improvements to electrical control devices.
The present invention relates to electrical control apparatus, and it particularly refers to electrical control apparatus of the type used in signaling systems for railways. More particularly, the present invention relates to the provision of an electrical control apparatus employing an improved type of dc multi-position relay, as well as to a means for controlling and actuating such a relay.
In general, the present invention provides a direct current, 4-position relay comprising a control or neutral coil for actuating a neutral armature, and one or more polarizing windings for polarizing an armature. polarized, normally maintained in an intermediate neutral position and actuated from one active position to another depending on whether the currents flowing in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Control and bias windings are of relative polarity or the other, respectively.
A circuit is associated with this relay and its arrangement allows it to energize at certain times the control windings but not the polarizing windings so as to determine the operation of the neutral armature without acting on the polarized armature, and at other times so as to excite both the control windings and the polarization windings, so as to obtain the displacement of the two neutral and polarized armatures.
More particularly, the present invention proposes to provide a 4-position direct current relay established to replace the three relays to be decoded ordinarily used in coded railway signaling systems. The three commonly used decoding relays include a code detector relay, a selective relay sensitive only to code 120 or "approach warning" current, and a selective relay responding only to code 180 or " free way ".
The arrangements of the circuit controlling the relays are such that when no coded current is flowing, all the relays are disabled; when code 75 or "warning" is circulating in the circuit, the code detector relay is energized while the other two remain in their home position; when either of the other two codes ("approach warning", or "free way") are circulating, the code detector relay and the one of the two code selector relays which corresponds to the particular code speed. present, are energized and held in the draw position while the otter code selector relay is released.
When a relay according to the present invention is incorporated into a control system of the type described, its control or neutral windings are set up to function as code detection relays, and they have two polarizing windings. corresponding respectively to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
two code selector relays, the polarity of the applied current. with the two polarizing windings being chosen so as to actuate in a reversible manner the polarized armature of the relay.
In view of the above considerations, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a new and improved type of multi-position DC relay.
Another object of the invention consists in providing a direct current relay of a new and improved type, comprising 4 distinct control positions.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a direct current relay with 4 positions in order to replace the three relays to be decoded customary used in coded railway signaling systems.
In addition, an object of the invention is to provide a decoding apparatus, of a new and improved type, intended for coded railway signaling systems.
Further, the invention provides a new and improved type of electrical control apparatus comprising a 4-position direct current relay as well as the means for controlling and operating this relay.
Other important characteristics of the invention will become evident as the description below progresses, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a schematic view relating to an embodiment of an electrical control device according to the invention and used to decode a coded track circuit current in a railway signaling system.
Figs. 2 and 3 are schematic views each indicating the different control positions that can be taken by the armatures of relay R indicated in fig.l.
In each of the different views, identical reference numbers and letters have been used to designate corresponding members.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
If we refer to the drawing, we see that 1 and the. denote the rails of the track of a section of railway line divided by insulating joints 2, so as to obtain an isolated section of track D-E. The rails of the section are supplied with coded track circuit current in the usual way, by means of a TT track transformer whose secondary winding is connected between the rails of the track while its primary winding is supplied. by alternating current from a suitable source indicated by the letters BX and CX.
A code transmitter CT activates a series of contacts to be coded 75, 120 and 180 at the respective rates of 75, 120 and 180 times per minute, for example, these contacts being interposed in each of the different circuits through which the current is applied to the TT transformer.
In accordance with. certain predetermined conditions, one or the other of the organs designated above, actuated by the code transmitter CT, is set so as to periodically interrupt or encode the current applied to the rails of the DE section, and, according to the drawing, the rate at which this current is coded is selected by an appropriate device controlled by the traffic, according to the conditions thereof on the section of track considered.
The details of the traffic controlled apparatus are not shown in the drawing, since the particular form of such apparatus does not fall within the scope of the present invention, but such apparatus can be established as follows. Any of the embodiments of decoding apparatus intended to be placed along the track and which are well known in the art; or it can be similar to. the apparatus to be decoded described in detail below.
It is believed that it suffices to indicate yes, in accordance with current practice, the contact 180 is placed in a condition to code the current applied to the transformer TT when the traffic conditions, in the section of track, correspond to the indication. "free way" on the other hand contact 120
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
may encode this current when there are "approach warning" conditions in the section of track; finally, the contact 75 operates so as to code the current when the traffic conditions, in the section, correspond to the indication "warning".
A new and improved type of electrical control apparatus has been provided, capable of decoding the coded current, associated with a section of railway track to which this coded track circuit current has been applied, and such an apparatus is shown in the drawing as being incorporated into a control system carried by a train and intended here for a train W occupying section DE. The train W, as seen in fig. 1 is provided with the two usual receiver coils 4 and 5 supported by the train in front of its first pair of wheels, in relation by induction respectively with the rails 1 and the way.
These coils are connected in series so that the voltages induced in these coils by the alternating current flowing in instantaneously opposite directions, in the rails 1 and 1a, are added to each other, and the coils are connected, via the usual amplifier A, to an NR control relay subject to the code.
In accordance with the usual practice, it will now be assumed that the MR relay is established and arranged so that its armature 6 is actuated towards its high position in response to each so-called "contact" interval of the code, when energy is received. rails of the track and so that this reinforcement%, 6 ,, 'reaches its. rest or low position during each "cut" interval of the code, that is to say when no current is received from the rails of the. way.
A DT transformer to be decoded is associated with the MR relay and it comprises a primary winding 9 and two secondary windings 10 and 11. When the MR relay is actuated by a current "contact" pulse, part of the winding, primary 9 is supplied with current from a source
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
suitable such as a battery, not shown, but whose two terminals are indicated at B and C, by means of an easy to follow circuit and comprising the working contact 6-7 of the relay, and then the relsis MR closes its contact 6-8 during a code "cut" interval,
another part of the prime winding 9 is excited by another circuit which can be seen clearly in fig.l. The directions of circulation of the current, in the two parts of the primary winding, are opposite, as can be seen clearly from the drawing, so due to the flow created in the transformer DT is reversed at a rate corresponding to the operating rate. of the MR relay, and it follows that alternating electromotive forces. ':; are induced in the windings 10 and 11 and that they have a frequency corresponding to the. rate of flux reversal in the transformer.
A single relay R with direct current and with 4 positions is associated with the transformer DT and this relay comprises a core capable of being magnetized having two outer branches 15 and 17 and a relatively shorter central branch 16, a yoke 18 connecting the branches together by one end of these, a neutral frame 19 arranged, for example, so as to pivot according to the usual method not shown to approach and move away from the other ends of the branches of the core and held for example by gravity, in a rest position in which it is remote from the branches of the core, as well as a polarized frame 20 articulated at 21 on the middle branch of the core, that is to say in a lower part in the form of a fork of this branch :
, this polarized armature being held for example by means of a spring 22 in a neutral intermediate position, shown in FIG. 1. The relay R also comprises a neutral or control winding composed of two coils 24, 24 surrounding each one of the outer branches of the nucleus and re-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
linked in series so that when they are excited, the coils contribute to circulating the flux in a magnetic circuit shown in FIG. 1 and comprising in series the outer branch 15; the yoke 18, the outer branch 17 and the frame 19.
It follows, therefore, that as soon as the control winding 24 is energized, the neutral armature 19 is moved towards the core in its position of attraction, shown in figure 1, and that, when the winding 24 ceases to be excited, the armature 19 moves to resume its rest position.
Neutral contact elements, such as elements 26, 27 and 28, are connected to the frame 19 in the usual manner shown in dotted lines in the drawing, and these contact elements are controlled so as to cooperate with them. usual contact points to constitute respectively work or rest contacts, depending on whether the armature 19 is respectively in its attracting or resting position.
The two outer branches 15 and 17 of the core of the relay R, as can be seen, are provided with cleats or auxiliary pole surfaces which extend inwardly towards each other along a line arranged below the pivot 21 of the frame 20. The central branch 16 of the core comprises one or more polarizing windings, two of which, 29 and 30, are indicated in the drawing.
When the control coil 24 is energized, and the polarizing coil 29 is energized by a current of a polarity chosen so that the coil 29 circulates the flux upwardly through the branch. 16 of the core, according to the drawing, the flux due to the current present in the winding 29 circulates along a magnetic circuit indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 2 and comprising in series the branch 16, the yoke 18, the branch 17 and its extension, and finally the frame 20. Consequently, this polarized frame 20 oscillates in the direction of clockwise, according to the drawing, or towards the stop provided on the branch 17, as can be seen in FIG. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
If one now reverses the direction of circulation of the polarizing flux circulating in the branch 16, for example by ceasing to energize the winding 29 and by energizing the winding 50 with current whose polarity is chosen to circulate the magnetic flux down through the branch 16, this polarizing flux circulates through a magnetic circuit indicated in dotted lines on the. FIG. 3 and comprising in series the branch 16, the frame 20, the cleat of the branch 15 and the branch 15 proper, and finally the. cylinder head 18. Consequently this. determines the oscillation of the armature 20 in an anti-clockwise direction, that is to say towards the branch 15, as seen in fig.Z.
Relay R can be easily modified to use a single polarizing winding, such as winding 29. With such a relay, polarized armature 20 can be operated in a reversible manner by reversing the polarity of the current applied to it. polarizing winding. In other words, when the control winding 24 is energized by a current of constant polarity, the armature 20 switches clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the relative polarity of the current applied to the winding. 29. Conversely, the polarity of the current applied to the winding 29 can be kept constant and the polarized armature can be tilted clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the. relative polarity of the current applied to the control winding.
In either case, the operation of the polarized armature depends on the excitation of the control winding and the polarizing windings, since when the control winding is not energized and the polarizing winding is energized, the two magnetic circuits of the polarizing flux, via the two outer branches 15 and 17 of the core, are in parallel and have equal air gaps between the armature 20 and the tabs carried by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
branches 15 and 17, and the flow is equally distributed in the two circuits, which gives a value equal to the attraction exerted on the two outer branches of the frame 20 and tends to maintain it in its normal intermediate position.
The operation of the neutral armature, under these assumed conditions, is not determined by the flux resulting from the current present in the polarizing winding.
Contact elements have been associated with the armature 20 so arranged that one series of contacts is closed when the armature is in its intermediate normal position, and another series of contacts is closed when the armature switches clockwise or towards the tab of branch 17, and another series of contacts is closed when the armature is forced to tilt counterclockwise. shows, that is to say towards the cleat of the other branch 15. These contact elements are mechanically connected to the frame 20, according to the schematic indication, in dotted lines, of the drawing, and they comprise , for example, polarized contact elements 32 and 33 as well as an intermediate contact element 34, fixed to an insulating member 35 mechanically connected to the frame 20.
Contact member 34 is in the shape of an inverted U or fork, and is supported by frame member 35, so that if frame 20 is in its normal intermediate position, a branch of the member 34 is in contact with a point of contact 36, while the other branch of this member is in contact with a point of contact 37, which gives a contact 36, 34, 37 closed when the polarized armature is is in its neutral or normal position in accordance with fig.l.
A polarized contact element 32 carried by the member 35 cooperates with a point of contact 38 to constitute a polarized contact 32 38 when the armature 20 rocks in the direction of clockwise or towards the branch 17, as is the case. see on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
fig. 2. When the armature is in this position, the lower contact element 34 is moved away from the point of contact 37, which cuts off the contact 36 34 37. The other polarized contact element 33, carried by the member 35, cooperates with a contact point 39 thus forming a polarized contact 33 39 when the armature 20 is tilted counterclockwise or towards the cleat carried by the branch 15, as seen in fig.3.
When the armature is in this position, the lower contact element 34 is moved away from the contact point 36, which cuts off the contact 36 34 37.
The rela.is R is included in a device to be decoded carried by the train so that the control coil 24 is connected to the secondary winding 10 of the transformer DT via a current rectifier 31 with pulses in- thirds; one polarizing winding 29 is connected to the secondary winding 11 through a DU 120 decoding group, and the other polarizing winding 30 is also connected to the winding 11 through another DU 180 decoding group.
The constructive details relating to the DU 120 and DU 180 decoding unit are not shown in the drawing, but such units usually include a rectifier and a tuning reactor capacitor device, tuned to resonate at a corresponding frequency respectively. at code rates of 120 and 180 pulses, so that winding 29 is effectively energized by a unidirectional current, applied through the group to be decoded DU 120, only and when the relay MR responds to the coded current of rate 120 , on the other hand, winding 30 is effectively energized by a unidirectional current applied through the DU 180 decoding group only and when the MR relay is operating at the code rate of 180 pulses.
The connection between the control winding 24 and the secondary winding 10 is not tuned, so
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
that control winding 24 receives unidirectional current through rectifier 41 and is effectively energized as soon as relay MR operates at any of the above code rates.
It is easily understood that the planned circuit arrangement with respect to the relay R is set so that the control winding 24 can be energized, for example when the relay MR is subjected to the code 75, without there being a actual energization of either of the two polarizing windings 29 and 30, and that when either of the polarizing windings is actually energized, as occurs when the MR relay is subjected to the either of the coded currents 120 or 180, the control winding 24 is also energized.
It follows, therefore, that the relay R can be controlled to give it any one of four positions; in the first of these positions the control and polarizing windings are not energized, the armature 19 is released and the polarized armature 20 occupies its normal intermediate position; in the second position, the control winding is energized, armature 19 is engaged or attracted, polarizing windings 29 and 30 are not energized and polarized armature 20 is in its normal intermediate position:
in the third position, the control winding 24 and one of the polarized windings 29 are excited by a current having a relative polarity such that it can tilt the polarized armature 20 clockwise, while the frame 19 is in its attracting position; in its fourth position, finally the control winding 24 and the other polarizing winding 30 are excited by a current of a relative polarity such that the polarized armature 20 can oscillate in the opposite direction to the clockwise. and that the neutral armature 19 is in the attractive position.

The control apparatus described above can be used to control appropriate railway control devices such as, for example, a shelter or cabin signal OS comprising 4 lamps 43 44 45 46. When the MR relay is inactive and the control winding 24 and the polarizing windings 29 and 30 cease to be energized, the neutral armature 19 is released and the rest contact 28 which it controls is closed to constitute a circuit of. supply of the lamp 43 of signal C3. This lamp can be used, for example, to provide the usual indication of "slow running" of the signal.
When a current coded as 75 is flowing through the section and the MR relay operates at. at a corresponding rate, the control winding 24 is energized and the neutral armature 19 is brought into play so as to close the work contact 28. The two polarizing windings 29 and 30 cease to be energized at this moment, therefore. so that the polarized armature 20 is in

Whenever a current coded as 180 flows through the rails and the MR relay operates at the corresponding rate, the control winding 24 is energized and determines the engagement of the neutral armature 19, which closes its working contact 26, while the polarizing winding 30 is effectively excited by a current whose polarity is such, with respect to the current flowing in the control winding, that the polarized armature 20 is switched into counterclockwise to close the polarized contact 33 39 and feed the lamp 46 with the CS signal via an obvious circuit including the working contact 26 of the armature
19 and the polarized contact 33 39 actuated by the polarized armature.
This lamp can be used to provide the usual "clear path" indication of the shelter signal.
