Préparation de- composés organo-siliciques.
------------------------------------------

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Preparation of organo-silicic compounds.
------------------------------------------
The present invention relates to a process for preparing organo-silicic compounds containing a hydroxyl group directly linked to silicon (hereinafter referred to as “silanols”) and for preparing polymers (siloxanes) of these products.
A certain number of silanes of the type 'RySi (OR') z in which R is an organic radical and "z" has the value of 1 to 3, are characterized that on hydrolysis they give silanols of the type RySi (OH) z and these latter products will give up water and (thunder siloxanes.
Thus, hydrolysis of silanes is essential for the production of commercial polymers, known as "silicones". Heretofore, such hydrolysis always required water, and hydrolysis was slow and difficult to control, causing wetting of the treated material and requiring drying thereof. This is why the object of the present invention is to produce silanols without using water, thus avoiding the drawbacks mentioned above.
According to the present invention, the silanols are prepared from substituted silanes of the RySi (OR ') z type

The acidification process can be carried out using any organic acid, either aliphatic, or aromatic, and mono-.

carboxylic or dicarboxylic, and among these are suitable (1 spee: L "1. especially: aliphatic acids such as formic, acetic, propionic, stearic, oleic, avietic, adipic; hydroxy acids, such as glycolic, malic, lactic; also dicarboxyl acids such as maleic, citric, tartaric; and aromatic acids, such as benzoic, salicylic, phthalic etc.
Preferred are acids which give esters which can be distilled off at atmospheric pressure, such as lower aliphatic acids. -When the ester is a liquid or a solid having plasticizing properties, such as phthalates, stearates, abietates, part or all of it may remain in the product.
The acidification reaction is catalyzed by free ions of hydrogen, preferably of a mineral acid such as the acid.

hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphate, or an acid salt, or the halide of an amphoteric metal, which

forms an acid complex with. organic acid used as a reagent. Up to 25% by weight of the mass is sufficient for the free catalyst acid.
If desired, the acidification can be carried out with hydrolysis by water. For example, a mixture of an organo-silicic halide and an organo-alkoxy silane can be treated first with water to hydrolyze the halide. and then by the organic acid and the catalyst acid to convert the alkoxy compound to the silanol. Likewise, two or more alkoxy silanes can be converted simultaneously. in silanols.
@
In general, since water is not used or produced in the acidification reaction, the silanols produced are substantially anhydrous. Savings are thus realized when the silanols are produced "in situ" on paper, textile fabrics, leather, because drying is not necessary after treatment.
For. illustrate the invention. the following examples are given:
Example 1: 34.5 gr. formic acid and 58.5 gr. of mono-amyl-triethoxysilane and 0.5 gr. of paratoluene sulphonic acid (catalyst), were mixed and refluxed for 30 minutes, and the ethyl formate was separated therefrom by distillation, thus leaving 50.5 g of a mixture of monoamyl-silantriol and @ polyamyl siloxane, as a white liquid! which became a solidplastic after subsequent heating.
Example II: An acid catalyst was prepared by passing boron fluoride gas through acetic acid until the solution was strongly acidic, showing the formation of a boron fluoride-acetic acid coordination complex. 140.5 gr. of this complex and 117 gr. of mono-amyltriethoxysilane were mixed and refluxed for one hour. 180 gr. ethyl acetate and BF3 acid were removed by distillation, leaving 53.5 g of a mixture of amylsilantriol and polyamylsiloxane.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Example III: Mono-amyltriethoxysilene and phthalic acid reacted as in Example I. The diethyl phthalate ester is left in the product to function as a plasticizer.
Example IV: Using the method (Example I, the following products were reacted, - (a) Mono-amyl triethoysilane with benozic acid (b) "with lactic acid (c ) Monoethyl triethoxy silene with acetic acid (d) "with citric acid
Example V: A cotton fabric was soaked in a 10% ammonium bifluoride solution and dried, and then soaked in a solution containing: 130 gr. of monocamyl triethoxysilane, 67 rr. of ethyl silicate, 110 gr. acetic acid.
The solution was left to stand 24 hours before use.
The fabric was air dried and ironed while still damp. The treated fabric contained the silanol and some siloxane and did not wet, either before or after washing.
Generally speaking, fabrics can be given a durable, non-wetting finish by treating them by mixing the reaction, heating them to remove the volatile ester and then continuing to heat them at 1500 ° C. for prepare the siloxane in situ. Likewise, paper, glass and ceramic products can be provided with non-wetting and electrical insulating coatings.
