 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Figs.

     Fige* 3 et 4 représentent un rail 6 fixé sur une plaque d'appui 7 et cette dernière fixée sur une traverse 8 au moyen de crampons suivant la Fige 2, les tiges 4 des crampons étant introduites dans lestrous 9 de la plaque 7 de manière que les bras 5 soient tournés vers le rail, et étant chassées dans des troua préalablement forés dans la traverse, Jusque ce que les bras 5 portent sur le patin 10 du rail.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Improvements to the crampons used to fix railway rails or their support plates to sleepers.

   This invention relates to elastic crampons for securing fort track rails which are driven into wooden sleepers and which have at the top end a laterally projecting clamping head or arm located. or extending on one side of the stud so as to be able to bear or elastically apply to the shoe of the rail.

   Known rail studs of the kind mentioned, as hitherto constructed, have only one shank. Such a crampon has the great disadvantage that the rod, even if it is not of round section, can turn in the cross member as a result of the path of the rail, which has the effect of considerably reducing its anchoring in the cross member,. And. the fixing properties of the crampon.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The main object of the present invention is to provide a rail cleat of the kind specified, of improved shape, which has a better grip in the cross member when pressed therein and is not capable of turning therein. the action. of the track of the rail * Another object is to provide the crampon with an improved elastic clamping arm which exerts a more elastic force on the shoe of the rail.

   According to the invention, the rail clamp of the kind in question cohorts several suitably spaced rods intended to be driven into holes spaced apart from the cross member.

   The invention is described more fully below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig 1 is an elevational view, showing a form of rail stud according to the invention, after the first phase of manufacture, and
Fig 2 is a perspective view of the finished spike.

   Fig. 3 is a cross section showing a rail and a backing plate fixed in place on a railroad cross member by means of the studs shown in FIG. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device of Fig. 3.

   Freezes. 5 and 6 are perspective views showing two variants of studs according to the invention.

   Fig. 7 is a perspective view of another variant of a stud according to the invention.

   Fig. 8 is a transverse section showing a rail fixed directly in place on a cross member by crampons which can only be used with that of FIG. 7.

   Fig 9 is a plan view of the device of Fig 8.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Figs. 10 and 11 are views in elevation perpendicular to each other of a variant of the stud shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, and
Fig. 12 is a plan view of the device of FIG. 10.

   On these drawings, and in the description below. like reference numerals designate like parts.

   In the embodiment shown in the figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a piece of rod or steel bar of the appropriate length, of round, oval, rectangular or other desired cross section is bent so as to form a part 1 in the shape of an upturned more or elongated monk , Fig. 1, the branches of which comprise parts 2 which diverge over a certain extent from the ends of the intermediate or straight connection part 3, and parallel parts 4.

   The upper part of part 1 is folded back at the junction of parts 3 and 4 at approximately right angles, so as to form an arm ?? loop or fork extending laterally to constitute the finished stud shown in FIG. 2, which has the two spaced rods 4 intended to be driven into the cross member and the side projecting eerrage arm 5 intended to bear resiliently on the shoe of the rail.

     Stem * 3 and 4 represent a rail 6 fixed to a support plate 7 and the latter fixed to a cross member 8 by means of crampons following Fig. 2, the stems 4 of the crampons being introduced into the holes 9 of the plate 7 so that the arms 5 are turned towards the rail, and being driven into holes previously drilled in the cross member, until the arms 5 bear on the shoe 10 of the rail.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The ends of the rods 4 are preferably made in the shape of a cone or point as shown at 11 to facilitate their introduction into the holes of the cross member *
Preferably the upper part of the part 1 is folded, Fig 1, at an angle a little greater than a right angle to form the elastic clamping arm 5, so that the latter is inclined from top to bottom relative to the rods 4 and is pushed from bottom to top towards the horizontal when the notch is driven out permanently in the desired position, as shown in Fig 3.

   Instead of the divergent parts 2 of the rods of part 1, Fig 1, diverge from the ends of the intermediate rectilinear or connecting part 3, they can diverge directly from each other so that the resulting arm 5 has in plan the V-shape shown in Fig. 5, or the curl or faded part 1 may be more or less semi-circular or have another curvilinear shape, the resulting arm 5 having the corresponding shape shown on Fig 6.

   The crampon represented in the Fige. 7, 8 and 9 is especially applicable in cases where. the rails are placed directly on the wooden sleepers without Intercalation of a sole or support plate * In this crampon the branched 12 of the arm 5 are folded in 13 more or monk perpendicular to the rods 4 and slightly up and down for s '' extend at a notable distance to one side of these, then we fold the branches vera inside, that is to say one towards the other and we then bring them back towards the stems until that the loop or connection part 14 of the arm comes at a short distance from the other

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 side of rods 4.

   The bends in 13 are or can be established so as to form shoulders 15. In use, the studs are placed so that the vertical rods @ 'press tightly against the edges of the shoe 10 of the rail 6 and these rods are driven out. in the holes previously drilled in the cross member, until the parts 14 bear on the shoe of the rail and the shoulders 15 bear against the edges of the shoe, as shown in Figs * 8 and 9. This type The crampon has the dual function of adjusting the gauge and position of the rail and keeping it in place on the cross member.

   It also has an arm 5 of sufficient length to provide the necessary elasticity while at the same time allowing the arm of the head 6 to be released from the rail in order to be able to drive the spike into the cross member. This type of crampon can also, if desired, be used for a saddle or base plate, if it is simply rotated so that it is placed in the other direction, that is to say to so that part 14 is located at the furthest point from the shoe 9 of the rail and that the part of the arm located on the other side of the rods 4 is placed above the shoe of the rail on which it bears when the clamp is chased up.

   In the variant of the crampon shown on the Fige.

  10, 11 and 12, the branches 12 of the arm 5 after having been bent in 13 and brought to a considerable distance on one side of the rods 4 are bent outwards, that is to say in s' separating one from the other, before being brought back towards the rods 4 to form the loop or the connecting part 14 which is on the other side of the rods. In this construction volume, the rods 4 are located between the curved parts or external parts of the branches 12 and, for a given size of the arm 5 in the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 longitudinal direction of the rail. the rods 4 are closer to each other than the rods of the crampon shown on Fige * 7, 8 and 9, which is advantageous in the case of narrow cross members.

   Between the points where the internal parts of the legs 12 are curved outwardly or edge against each other and the middle of the loop or connection 14, the legs are preferably bent up and down as shown. on Fige. 10 and it * this crampon can be used in the same way as that shown in Fig. 7,
In all cases, the stud is or can be suitably tempered to exhibit the desired elasticity.

   It will easily be understood that a crampon according to the invention, which comprises several rods, has a longer grip in the cross member than a crampon comprising only one rod and, in addition, cannot turn in the cross member without the inaction of the track of the rail. it will be noted that the flexible arms of the crampons shown on the Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4, on Fige, 7, 8 and 9 and on Fige. 10, 11 and 12 have a longitudinal bearing line on the shoe of the rail between the rods 4 while the arms of the crampons shown in FIG. 5 and in FIG. 6 have a fulcrum on the shoe of the rail, between the rods CLAIMS
