Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Multi-cycle hot gas piston machine.

   Some hot gas piston machines with several cycles, for example hot gas engines or refrigeration machines, operating on the reverse principle to that of the hot gas engine, are made in such a way that the volume of each cycle is influenced only by two faces of different pistons, one of these faces modifying the volume of the hot chamber of a determined cycle and the other, the volume of the cold chamber of the same cycle, the pistons sweeping different cylinders.

   This therefore implies for example that in a machine with four cylinders, the total number of cycles described is four, the hot chambers of these cycles are located, for example, above the pistons in the cylinders, while the cold chambers are found in the other cylinders, below the pistons. The speakers located above them

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 pistons then constitute hot chambers; however, the hot chamber - located above a particular piston is not part of the same cycle as the cold chamber formed below that piston. The other essential elements of a cyele, the heater, the recuperator and the refrigerant can then be mounted in the communication channels between the hot room and the cold room.

   In a particularly favorable arrangement conrzu, the axes of the cylinders lie on a circle and the pistons act, via suitable couplings, on a nutation disc control mechanism. Among other advantages, this arrangement enables the various chambers to communicate via short channels of the same length. As a result, the average volumes of the rooms in which all the cycles take place. are equal and harmful spaces are reduced to a minimum.

   In the aforementioned embodiment of a hot gas piston machine comprising a nutating disc control mechanism, the required offset between the variations in the volumes determined by the two combined piston faces is obtained automatically. This offset is determined by the expression 180 - 360 / n, n being the number of cylinders, provided that the axes of the cylinders are evenly distributed over the circle and the pistons of two neighboring cylinders are conjugated.

   In machines comprising more than 4 cylinders, it may however happen that the offset thus obtained is not compatible with the construction of the machine. According to the invention, a hot gas piston machine with several cycles and whose piston faces which influence, with a certain offset, the volume of the enclosures in which a cycle is described, are coupled to a disc nutation, the volume of each cycle being influenced by only two faces

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 different pistons, one of which regulates the volume of the hot chamber of a given cycle and the other the volume of the cold chamber of the same cycle,

   is carried out so that the number of cycles exceeds four and that the two pistons, whose faces influence the same cycle, sweep cylinders arranged in such a way that the planes passing through the respective axes of these cylinders form, with the plane passing through the axis of the shaft driven by the nutation disc, an angle greater than that formed by the planes passing through the respective axes of two neighboring cylinders and the axis of the shaft driven by the nutation disc. In this case, the face of the piston in a cylinder is therefore not combined with a face of the piston in a neighboring cylinder, but with a face of the piston in a cylinder spaced from the first.

   However, the shift can also be calculated using the above formula, in which n is then not the number of cylinders used, but a fraction whose numerator is the number of cylinders and the denominator of the number of places separating the two cylinders combined on the circle. Thus, in the case of 7 cylinders, uniformly distributed over a circle, cylinder 1 being combined with cylinder 3, the offset obtained is:
360
180 - --- = + 77
7/2 -
For 10 cylinders, cylinder 1 being conjugated with cylinder 4, the offset is 180 - 360 - 72.

   Likewise, the hot chamber 12, situated on the underside of the piston 16 in the cylinder 3, communicates through a heater, a recuperator and a cooler, with the cold room 21 under the piston 17 of cylinder 4, the hot chamber of which communicates finally, via a heater, a recuperator and a refrigerant, with the cold room 18 of cylinder 1.
 EMI4.3
 Through suitable couplings, the four pistons act on the nutation disc 26 and thus causing the rotation of the shaft 27.

   In this case, piston 14 of cylinder 1 is therefore combined with piston 15 of cylinder 2, piston 15 with piston 16 of cylinder 3, piston 16 with piston 17 of cylinder 4 and finally piston 17 with piston 14 of cylinder 1; as the four cylinders are distributed evenly over a circumference, the offset between the volumes, determined by two piston faces, is equal to 4 =

   Figs. 3a and b schematically represent a 7-cylinder engine, the cylinders of which are interconnected in accordance with the invention; in fig. 3a, cylinder 1 communicates with cylinder 3, and so on; in fig. 3b, cylinder 1 communicates with cylinder 4, the latter with cylinder 7, and so on. In this case, we therefore pass two cylinders.

    If.1 the cylinders were connected in the known manner, i.e. cylinder 1 with cylinder 2, etc., the offset would be! 1290; in the assembly shown in fig. 3a, this angle is 77 and in that of FIG. 3b, from 26. The choice of the desired angle depends on several factors.
