 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

    "Improvements to a Civet for Bowl Type Burners."
The present invention relates to an improvement :, to burners of the bowl type and relates to improved means for the admission of air into a liquid hydrocarbon burner.

   Another object is to provide improved means for the admission of secondary air to the mixture of vaporized hydrocarbon and primary air in a hydroxylation trough type burner.

   Another object of the invention is to achieve silent combustion.

   Other objects, characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The present invention relates to a bowl for a bowl-type burner; this bowl comprises an element having a circumferential side wall and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the bowl being open, and it is characterized in that the side wall is pierced with several primary air intake openings distributed along its circumference and secondary air inlet holes, located near the open end of the bowl; these latter orifices being arranged in rows, and their axes preferably being convergent.

   The invention is illustrated more or less schematically by the appended drawing in which
Fig. 1 is an axial vertical section of one embodiment.

   Fig. 2 is a similar partial section on a larger scale.

   Fig. 3 shows a variant of the arrangement of the air inlet openings.

   Fig. 4 is a section on 4-4 of FIG. 3.

   Fig. 5 is another variant of the arrangement of the air inlet openings, and
Fig. 6 is a section through 6-6 d.e in FIG. 5.

   The corresponding elements have been designated by the same reference numerals in all the figures and throughout the description.

   Reference 1 designates, in general, an outer casing provided with several feet 2 between which air intake spaces 3 are formed. The casing is partially closed by a horizontal partition 4 pierced with an opening 5. A ring 6, having an angle-shaped section, receives the upper edge 8 of the bowl 7 of the burner. An upper part 9 of the envelope 1 defines a space which serves as

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 combustion chamber or radiating element. Any suitable drawing means, not shown, can be provided for the discharge of the hot gases and the products of combustion.

   One of the ends of the bowl is partially closed by a ring 10 pierced with a central opening to allow the flame to pass. The bowl is shown with a bottom or closed end 11, slightly concave and a side wall 12, of generally cylindrical shape, pierced with several orifices 13 for primary air intake ,, distributed around the circumference of the wall 12 and located, at various distances from the bottom of the tank. Above or beyond the lowest row of orifices 13 is arranged a deflector ring 14 with a central opening, supported by suitable brackets or studs 15 of any type.

   The liquid fuel is injected into the bowl through a pipe 16, the flow rate of which is regulated by any regulation system indicated at 17. By way of example, a float valve of known type provided with an operating button 18 will be shown. allowing the flow of fuel in pipe 16 to be adjusted. It must nevertheless be understood that any suitable control means, manual or automatic, can be provided to vary the flow of liquid fuel in pipe 16 or to possibly maintain a flow rate constant if needed. The axis of the bowl has been shown vertical but it should be understood that it could be oriented horizontally or obliquely.

   It is known that in current type bowl burners, a liquid hydrocarbon is vaporized by the heat of the combustion taking place in the bowl or above the bowl.

  The liquid hydrocarbon is injected inside the bowl and is first partially vaporized by the heat given off by the hydroxylation which takes place in it. As liquid hydrocarbon vaporizes in the bowl, it rises and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 surrounds itself with a secondary air curtain. The heat radiated by this combustion provides the additional calories necessary to vaporize all of the liquid hydrocarbon. The action of the so-called primary air and that of the so-called secondary air admitted inside the tank are different.

   In the device shown, the air entering through the primary air orifices 13 exerts an action different from that of the air entering through the secondary orifices 24. In. In effect, all the oxygen brought in by the air entering through the primary orifices 13 is entirely consumed in the hydroxylation process. On the other hand, the oxygen in the air entering through the secondary orifices 24 is only partially used, but all of the hydrocarbons vaporized and surrounded by the secondary air is entirely consumed.

   When fuel is sent into the bowl to produce a large fire, combustion takes place at a level determined by the secondary air intake section through orifices 24. The flame passes through the central opening of the combustion chamber. ring 10 and enters the combustion chamber 9.

   The device which is the subject of the invention provides a particularly effective means for supplying the secondary air and ensuring silent and efficient combustion. For example, according to the invention, a row of secondary air orifices 24 'directed upwards is used, imparting an upward trajectory to the air jet towards the axis of the cuvette.

   In addition to the row of secondary air ports; inclined 24, a second row of secondary orifices is provided. 24a.

  These, as shown in fig 2, have their axes perpendicular to the axis of the bowl. The orifices 24 and 24a are arranged two by two to give jets of air which meet. It is also sometimes possible to slightly incline the axes of the holes in the upper row, in order to make the jets converge at a point

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 closer to the inner face of the wall of the bowl.

  However, the arrangement of the holes shown in fig. 2 has been found to be very satisfactory. It should be understood that the means provided for obtaining secondary air jets which meet can vary considerably. It is desirable to direct the secondary air generally upwards as well as inwards in the direction of the open end of the cuvette.

   In the variant shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the arrangement of the orifices is substantially the same as in FIG. 4, except that the diameter of the holes 51 of the upper row is appreciably smaller than that of the holes 50 of the lower row, and that these two rows are a little closer to each other than in the case of the fig. 2. Here, the holes 50 in the lower row are angled at a fairly large angle towards the open end of the bowl. The air jets through the small orifices 51 strike the air jets passing through the large orifices 50.

   In the variant of FIGS. 5 and 6, there are two rows of holes: an upper row of smaller holes 52 whose axis is perpendicular to that of the bowl, and a lower row of holes 53 slanted somewhat towards the open end of the bowl .. The orifices of these two rows are offset from one another as shown in fig. 5. As a result, the air jets interfere with each other rather than meet each other. Experience shows that in most cases it is preferable to provide jets which hit each other; in some cases, you can do everything, and even get a good result by causing some interference of the jets.

   Such interference can be obtained by various arrangements and distributions of the orifices, FIGS. 5 and 6 representing, by way of example, a practically feasible solution.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   It should be understood that the devices shown and described constitute only a few examples of a practical and efficient embodiment of the invention, and that modifications can be made in the size, shape, number and arrangement of the elements without the need for 'this departs from the spirit of the invention. The drawing and the description should therefore be regarded only as being illustrative and in no way limiting.

   The operation of the burner bowl object of the invention is as follows:
In the bowl type liquid hydrocarbon burners, it is very important to provide an adequate intake of secondary air into the primary mixture, and this so that the combustion takes place substantially silently. It is important that the quantities of secondary air and the points at which it is admitted are such that the final mixture burns in a stable manner up to the wall of the bowl itself or to some other plane or fixed surface in the vicinity. from the secondary air intake point. In the device that is the subject of the invention, the secondary air is admitted in jets which strike or meet with each other at a small distance from the wall of the bowl and which provide a largely sufficient flow of secondary air at the point of admission.

   In practice, all of the embodiments shown provide quiet and efficient combustion with an ample supply of air to the base of the jets. The encounters between the two inclined air streams keep the flow velocity of the jets low and prevent any tendency of the flame to move away from the inner wall of the bowl.

     It can be seen that the vessel described, the manufacture of which is simple and easy and the mounting of which in a burner is easy, in practice ensures silent combustion and high efficiency.

  The secondary air is delivered in interfering jets towards the mixture

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 interior primary air and vaporized fuel flowing towards the mouth of the bowl. The air jets delivered by the lower or interior row of secondary air orifices 24 are inclined towards the central opening of the ring 10. An additional secondary air is delivered directly towards the axis of the bowl. through the orifices 24a. The air jets supplied by the corresponding orifices of the two rows meet and consequently give a very silent flame at the base of which the supply of air is amply sufficient and of which the flow velocity is relatively. scaled down. This prevents the flame from "dancing" or vibrating or oscillating relative to the wall of the bowl.

   These oscillations of the flame are indeed one of the main causes of a noisy combustion.

   Thus, the invention makes it possible to control or limit the speed of the air jets while at the same time ensuring a sufficient supply of secondary air at the base of the flame in the vicinity of the wall of the bowl.

   It is advantageous, but not essential, to provide the same number of orifices in the two rows 24 and 24a arranged in pairs. Of course, the bowl is also applicable to burners in which the axis of the bowl is vertical and to those where this axis is horizontal or inclined.

   When the upper openings are arranged in longitudinal alignment with the corresponding lower openings, as in figs. 2 and 3, the trajectory of the upper jet crosses that of the lower jet and the air masses of the two jets meet. When the upper orifice is not directly plumb with the lower orifice, there may not be a direct meeting between the jets. But as long as the orifices are sufficiently close together, both horizontally and vertically. Lally, the interference between the jets is noticeable without any direct encounter. Areas of interference are indicated by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 dotted lines in fig. 5 and 6.

   By comparing the variants of fig. 3 and 4, on the one hand, and FIGS. 5 and 6, on the other hand, it can be seen that, in the first case, there is a direct encounter between the jets, while, in the second case, there is an interference zone between the various jets.

Une cuvette pour un brûleur à cuvette du type à hydroxylation comprenant un élément ayant une paroi latérale circonférentielle et une paroi terminale fermée, l'autre extrémité de la cuvette étant ouverte, cette paroi latérale entourant un espace dont le diamètre est sensiblement constant d'un bout à 1' autre de la cuvette et étant percée d'orifices d'air primaire répartis autour de sa circonférence et à des distances variables par rapport aux extrémités de la cuvette, ainsi que d'orifices d'air secondaire situés plus près de l'extrémité ouverte de la cuvette que les orifices d'air primaire, A bowl for a hydroxylation-type bowl burner comprising a member having a circumferential side wall and a closed end wall, the other end of the bowl being open, this side wall surrounding a space whose diameter is substantially constant by one. end to the other of the cuvette and being pierced with primary air orifices distributed around its circumference and at varying distances from the ends of the cuvette, as well as secondary air orifices located closer to the cuvette. open end of the cuvette as the primary air ports, ces orifices d'air secondaire formant au moins deux rangées dans lesquelles les divers orifices sont plus rapprochés entre eux que les orifices d'air <Desc/Clms Page number 10> primaire et ces deux rangées étant plus rapprochées entre elles que les rangées d'orifices d'air primaire, les axes des orifices correspondants des deux rangées secondaires étant convergents et étant agencés de manière à admettre dans la cuvette des jets con- vergents et se frappant mutuellement; 14. these secondary air orifices forming at least two rows in which the various orifices are closer together than the air orifices <Desc / Clms Page number 10> primary and these two rows being closer to each other than the rows of primary air orifices, the axes of the corresponding orifices of the two secondary rows being convergent and being arranged so as to admit into the bowl converging jets and striking each other mutually; 14. The secondary air ports comprise several rows, the axes of the neighboring secondary air ports being inclined with respect to each other and being arranged to create, interfere with or provide jets of air which strike each other. the others, a flow of secondary air directed, generally, towards the open end of the bowl and towards the axis thereof.
