<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Furniture, seat or armchair, convertible into a bed for one or two people.
Known pieces of furniture of this type generally have a complicated mechanism and, for their proper functioning, require the use of accessory parts, which must be added or removed, which further complicates their use.
On the other hand, their cost price is high, owing to the fact that these accessory parts require the use of larger dimensions and consequently cause a waste of materials.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another drawback of these convertible pieces of furniture is that they also require a large padded area which is unnecessary when the piece of furniture is folded up and which also increases the cost price.
All these drawbacks are eliminated by the present invention, there are no parts to remove or add.
To obtain the area of the bed, exclusively the upholstered areas of the furniture are used.
Two embodiments, given by way of non-limiting example, are shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the folded cabinet, seen from the right, the front part of the frame being removed.
Figure 2 shows the cabinet opened and transformed into a bed, in a longitudinal vertical section.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the open cabinet, tram formed into a bed, with a partial section showing the base of the cabinet.
Figure 4 shows a second embodiment, seen from the right, partially in section.
In the drawings, figures 1 to 3: a represents the two vertical sides of the frame of the furniture between which is disposed a thinning slat b, the drawer ± rests on the casters d. g represents the seat frame, h the back frame, the two frames are padded on one side only.
The seat frame rests on the drawer ± and at its lower face are fixed the slats i housed in the cavity of the drawer c and which form a stop limiting the travel of the latter; the frame of the backrest h also comes to rest by its lower part against the drawer c; for this purpose the two sides of the drawer are extended beyond the rear part of the drawer, these extensions 1 are provided with reinforcing pieces k whose ends are curved, in which the tenons 1 attached to the rear of the backrest frame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To ensure more comfort, the lower end m of the backrest frame is longer than necessary in the case of the armchair, thus allowing a greater resting surface to be created when the furniture is unfolded.
At this lower end of the backrest frame is fixed a caster n, which maintains a sufficient distance between the back frame and that of the seat, in order to prevent friction and wear of the upholstered parts.
To the upper part of the back frame is fixed a swivel arm o whose lower end engages in a vertical groove p, cut in the rear panel of the cabinet; as a result, this arm is movable upwards and downwards and can rotate around the axis r. Behind the backrest frame] h is the panel s holding the cushion, its lower part is attached to the furniture frame so that it can pivot around the axis t. At its lower part this panel carries a buffer v which, when the cushion is vertical, rests on the spring z. This spring tends to horizontally lower said panel s.
To transform the furniture into a bed, pull the seat frame g by gripping it by the handle gl. At this moment the slats of the frame of the seat abut against the front panels of the drawer c and entrain the latter. When the drawer moves forward, the curved end of the support arms k engage with the notches 1 in the backrest frame and pull the backrest forward. In this way the back frame tilts and leaves the vertical position visible in figure 1 and comes to occupy the horizontal position shown in figure 2, at the same time it advances on the guide slats bl in the limits. allowed by the o arm.
When the back frame has moved away from the panel s, the latter moves to its horizontal position under the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tion of the spring z so that this panel comes to rest by its front edge on the frame of the backrest h placed horizontally. The transformation of the furniture is thus complete.
When the cabinet is folded up, the seat frame g is pushed towards the inside of the cabinet frame and the drawer slides inwards, at this time the lower end of the backrest frame h is raised somewhat under the pressure of the seat frame. At the same time, the arms o pivot around their axis r, also driving the upper part of the frame of the backrest which in this way moves back and rises.
In this position, the lower part of this frame rests against the buffer j1 of the drawer. The panel! is also raised and at the same time in its initial vertical position.
The action of opening and folding the cabinet takes place automatically by pulling and pushing back the seat frame.
The handling of the furniture is extremely simple.
The interior of the drawer is easily accessible by the fact that the seat frame is not only tiltable but can also be removed from the drawer; even the back frame is easily separable from the drawer. It follows that the furniture can easily be cleaned and transported.
The embodiment shown in Figure 4 is used when it is a seat convertible into a bed for one person. It differs from the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 3 in that the lower end of the arms ol which attach the backrest frame to the furniture frame, .La is connected to the stiffening slat b arranged at the lower part. - upper frame.
The upper end of these arms forms a hook which engages in a releasable manner in a cavity w provided in the lower part of the frame h of the backrest; in addition, a lug is fixed there on the upper part of the arm ol. The panel is not subject to the influence of uressort,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
but its lower part is provided with a support piece vl against which abuts the frame of the backrest when the latter tilts towards its horizontal position.
When opening the cabinet, the frame h of the backrest tilts in the same way as shown in Figures 1 and 3.
When the cabinet is closed, the backrest frame h pushed towards the rear collides with the lug y of the arm ol and therefore is guided by this arm to its vertical position, the panel s is raised in same time.
Other control or connection members can optionally be provided and produced such as for example the hooks k could be fixed to the frame of the seat instead of to the drawer, these modifications in no way modify either the extent or the scope of the invention.
