<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
zeux.

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Arc welding process and electrode holder for its execution.
The present invention relates to an arc welding method and apparatus, particularly for the welding of hardly weldable metals such as magnesium, aluminum, stainless steel, certain bronzes and special alloys. The arc and the molten zone are covered with a blanket of non-oxidizing gas containing a monoatomic inert gas such as helium or argon. The arc is ignited in the gas between the workpiece and a metal electrode of refractory material, preferably a material which hardly burns, such as lungsten or molybdenum.
The processes of this kind are subject to instability, displacement and spitting of the arc, that is to say, the latter required to move continuously from one hot point to another on the tip of the electrode. or turn off. This extremely annoying phenomenon often causes irregular, asymmetrical weld areas.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
quirky, non-uniform or of weak resistance, and blackish and dirty in appearance.
The currents of great intensity being to be avoided, the work had to be limited to the welding of sheets of small thickness, the welding was slow, and the wear of the electrode high.
The distance between the nozzle or nozzle and the workpiece had to be so small that it was difficult for the operator to follow the course of the work. Welding was generally difficult and of uneven performance.
With alternating current, some of these difficulties were attributed to rectification, which partially or completely eliminates the positive half-wave from the cycle. To remedy this drawback, it has been proposed to use, separately or in combination, emissive layers and control of the polarity. The use of emissive layers required coating the work surface with products such as barium or strontium carbonates, in order to increase the electron emission capacity of the work surface. The polarity check consisted of the use of an accumulator battery in series in an ordinary AC soldering circuit, for the control of alternately positive and negative voltages.
The voltage of the battery could thus be added to one voltage and subtracted from the other in any desired proportion, so as to correct said voltages. However, these two means required special equipment, or a particular technique or preparation.
In accordance with the present invention, the method of arc welding of metals comprises forming an arc between a refractory metal electrode and the workpiece, by means of an electric current, passing along the length of the electrode. electrode of an annulus current of non-oxidizing gas to cover the arc and the molten parts of the workpiece, maintaining the diameter of this current between 2-1 / 3
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to 4 times that of the electrode, and the length of said current along the electrode between 4 and 8 times the diameter of said current, this current being non-turbulent, approximately laminar, the electric current being maintained between the following limits:
60 to 150 Amps for an electrode diameter of one sixteenth of an inch (1.58 mm.) And 250 to 1000 amps for an electrode diameter of 3/16 of an inch (4.74 mm.) In the purpose of stabilizing the arc.
The invention also comprises a welding electrode holder for carrying out the method, this electrode holder comprising a refractory metal electrode holder, a nozzle surrounding the holder and having an internal opening diameter of between 21/2 and 4 times the diameter of the electrode, the length of the nozzle between the support and its opening being 4 to 6 times the internal diameter of the nozzle.
The objects of the present invention are therefore to establish, in an arc welding carried out in an atmosphere of inert gas, a stable, immobile arc, producing a uniform weld area, of clean appearance, and a strong, homogeneous weld, not requiring the special equipment and preparation mentioned above, in order to increase the welding speed, and to allow the welding of thicker sheets.
The invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig.l is a vertical section of a gas mattress electrode holder established in accordance with the invention.
Fig.2 is a similar view of a variant.
Unlike the previously planned arc stabilization devices, the new simplified process involves the combined use of a high current intensity and a laminar, non-turbulent current of inert gas, and the increase tion of the unsupported bare part of the electrode in the gas current
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
zeux. For this purpose, the ac current is between 60 and 120 amperes for an electrode diameter of 1/16 of an inch (1.58 mm.), And rises and exceeds 750 amps for an electrode of. 3/8 inch (9.5 mm.). The laminar, non-turbulent stream of inert gas is obtained by the use of a nozzle with a substantially cylindrical wall, with a diameter between 21/2 and 4 times the diameter of the electrode and a length of about 4 to 8 times its own diameter.
The extension of the electrode is between sixteen diameters for a 1/16 inch (1.58 mm.) Electrode and six or seven diameters for a 3/8 inch (9.5 mm.) Electrode.
The high intensity of the current generates a high temperature at the electrode tip, which promotes both the ionization of the inert gas and the stabilization of the arc. The uniform, laminar flow of inert gas prevents turbulence and backwash which could interfere with arc stability. The extension of the electrode and the laminar, uniform flow of gas prevent degradation of the electrode which, under other circumstances, could occur with the use of such high current.
The desirable high temperatures carry the risks of melting certain parts of the electrode holder, which risks are greatest for the nozzle which is the part closest to the arc. The operation is therefore preferably carried out at the highest temperature that the nozzle can withstand. When the nozzle is of infusible material, no cooling mode is provided, while in the case of a metallic nozzle, the cooling system, just sufficient to prevent melting, is established so as to maintain the highest possible temperature of the electrode tip and the argon current, without producing the fusion, of the nozzle.
The optimum working condition can be expressed by the term surface melting of the electrode tip, which ne-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ceases the oxidation protection provided by the blanket of inert gas flowing in a laminar current through the long nozzle. The water cooling of the electrode holder is established in order to reduce the dimensions of the members and to ensure easier handling.
Fig.l shows the electrode holder T comprising a metal tube S transmitting the welding current to the electrode holder H which is provided with an electrode clamp G, and means for supplying inert gas through the holes K inside the N nozzle.
Reference (a) represents the diameter of the electrode; (b) is the free length of the electrode; (c) is the inside diameter of the mouth of the nozzle; (d) is the length of the nozzle measured d from the axis of the holes K to the end of the nozzle N. In this example, the nozzle is ceramic. In the case of alternating current at 25.50 or 60 cycles per second, this is measured by a core type amperemeter, whose error of indication due to distorted waves is minimum.
In the electrode holder shown in Fig. 2, the electrode holder H and the nozzle N are cooled by a stream of water. The metal tube S communicates with an angular extension 10 constituting with an annular cavity a water jacket 12 communicating with the interior of the tube S. The water, supplied by a tube 14, passes through the jacket 12 and is evacuated. through the tube S. The inert gas, supplied in the support H by a tube 15 passes through the lights K located between the claws 16 of the electrode clamp G to then enter the nozzle N.
The nozzle N, made of stainless steel, comprises an annular chamber adjacent to the clamp-electrode G, closed by a stainless steel ring 18 and constituting a water jacket 20 into which the water enters through a pipe 21 while it comes out of it heated by a pipe 22.

Between the current limits indicated, it is possible to make arc welds under an inert gas blanket, on parts of any thickness.
Below the lower limits of the current indicated, the arc becomes unstable in the case of direct current welding, hot stray spots appear on the electrode, while the end of the latter is no longer. completely enveloped by the arch. With alternating current, this circumstance promotes recovery. Within the DC limits given above, the end of the electrode, completely surrounded by the arc, is hot but does not melt. Within the AC limits above, the arc covers the end of the electrode, but the rectifying effect is zero.
The uniform laminar flow of inert gas, acting in concert with this high intensity of electric current, is obtained by proportioning the nozzle so as to increase its length. The proposed length of the nozzle (d) is between 21/2 and 4 inches (6.3 to 10.2 cms.) A larger nozzle further protects the welding loupe as well as the adjacent surface, promoting laminar flow of protective inert gas as it exits the nozzle, thereby preventing turbulence and eddies that could compromise the efficiency of the gas mattress. The increased length (b) of the electrode is between 16 diameters for a 1/16 inch (1.58 mm.) Electrode and between 6 to 7 diameters for a 3/8 inch (9 , 5 mm.), The intermediate gauges being established proportionally in the reverse ratio.
Thanks to this increase in length, the risk of melting or dropping of the electrodes / which could result from the rise in temperature due to the increase in current, is avoided by a more efficient gas shield. Currents of up to 750 amps were passed through a 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) electrode without causing degradation or discoloration.
The combination of the increased length and diameter of each electrode gauge greatly improved welding conditions. In alternating current, the rectification was suppressed, while in direct current, the arc became stable and quiet. In both cases the weld range attests to the qualities of an effective gas shield, has a clean appearance, while the welding speed is increased together with
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
greater convenience of execution. The electrode tip can be moved one inch (2.5 cm) away from the workpiece without extinguishing the arc, and parts of greater thickness can be welded.
By more adequate sizes of the nozzle and by higher currents, better results can be obtained than by the use of emissive layers and / or by controlling the polarity. The above condition of high current intensity and elongated electrode does not, however, provide an absolutely symmetrical wave, the latter showing more of the positive component.
Thanks to the new arrangement of the electrode and the nozzle, the temperature of the protective inert gas is increased, thus establishing a strongly ionized path for the reestablishment of the current after its passage through zero.
