  Ecran luminescent.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Luminescent screen.

   The invention relates to a luminescent screen, as well as to a method of preparing a luminescent substance suitable for such a screen, and to a radiator constituted by the combination of a source of ultraviolet rays and such a luminescent screen.

   There are already many applications of luminescent substances. Thus it is known to use a luminescent substance in the screen of a cathode ray tube.

  It is. It is also known to combine such a substance with a source of ultraviolet rays, for example a discharge lamp in the high or low pressure mercury vapor, in order to convert the ultraviolet rays supplied by this source into light. In these various applications, to obtain good results the luminescent substances must, apart from their specific luminescent properties, satisfy certain conditions. Although luminescent substances

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 have many properties in common, some of their properties are however divergent. Therefore, it is desirable to increase the number of luminescent substances available to facilitate the choice.

   The luminescent screen according to the invention comprises a magnesium fluorophosphate activated with uranium, thallium or silver.

   Preferably, the molecular ratio of magnesium phosphate to magnesium fluoride contained in the fluorophosphate is selected between 2, 9: 1 and 3.1: 1.

   When uranium alone is used as activator, the amount of activator (based on uranium trioxide) is preferably chosen between 1 and 10% by weight of the total amount of the remainder of the luminescent substance.

   When only thallium is used as activator, the amount of thallium (based on thallium nitrate) is preferably chosen between 1 and 10% by weight of the total amount of the rest of the luminescent substance.

   When silver is used as activator, the amount of activator based on silver nitrate will preferably not exceed 1%, based on the total amount of luminescent substance.

   For the addition of uranium as activator, in a particular embodiment, uranyl nitrate (UO3 (NO3) 2. 6H20) is used.

   The following is a process for the preparation, given only by way of example, of luminescent magnesium fluorophosphate activated with uranium.

   The starting point is magnesium fluoride and ammonium magnesium phosphate. To obtain the desired product, these substances must be very pure.

   To prepare activated magnesium fluorophosphate with uranium, an intimate mixture of phosphate is prepared @ ----

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 ammonium and dry magnesium and dry magnesium fluoride in a ratio such that for 3 molecules of phosphate the mixture contains 1 molecule of fluoride. To this dry mixture is added the activator in the form of uranium trioxide (UO3). Preferably, the following ratio is used: 40 g of ammonium and magnesium phosphate: 3.3 g of magnesium fluoride: 1 g of uranium oxide. The dry mixture is heated to a temperature of about 900 ° C. for a time which may vary from 0.5 to 1 hour, depending on the amount of substance prepared. With the above amounts, heating for 30 minutes is sufficient.

   The dry product is ground; treatments are optionally repeated until the brightness of the luminescence is maximum. During this heating, magnesium fluorophosphate is obtained which is activated with uranium.

   To prepare magnesium fluorophosphate activated with thallium, the aforementioned quantity of 1 gram of uranium oxide is replaced by 1 gram of thallium nitrate.

   For the preparation of activated magnesium fluorophosphate with silver, instead of 1 gram of uranium oxide, 0.1 g or less of silver nitrate or an equivalent amount of silver is used. 'silver acetate.

   The luminescent substance obtained in the above-described manner can be used in a luminescent screen to convert radiation from high or low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps to light and also in the screen. a cathode ray tube. In addition, said substance can be used in the preparation of luminescent colors for advertising applications or as luminescent filler, for example in plastics or paper. The color of the emitted luminescent light is green.
