<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements to automatic safety mechanisms for mechanically operated knives cutting strips of material.
It is often necessary to be able to automatically cut into sections of determined length strips of material coming from a reel, while the strips are applied to moving objects, usually parts or objects moving in rotation. . By way of example, the objects may be cardboard boxes to be covered with a decorative or protective layer of paper coated with glue or the equivalent.
To perform this operation, the worker must apply the end of the strip to the object to be covered, which is then set in motion, usually by means of a pedal provided on the @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
machine and operated by the worker, so that the guided strip under the control of the latter is wound on the object and is then automatically cut to the desired length, without the intervention of the worker.
Normally, the worker's fingers are not in danger, but there is no way to prevent the foot control from being operated and the knives from performing their severing motion when the worker has the fingers engaged. between the knives, and accidents can occur as a result of inattention, or during cleaning or other handling.
Since access to the part where the knives are located is essential for the operation of the machine, the aim of the present invention is to ensure complete safety in the event of distraction or ill-considered action.
According to the present invention, a device is used which, so that the sectioning can be done only under the action of the pedal or other command under the control of the worker, forces the strip of material to pass under tension between the knives and in a particular place relative to them.
In the embodiment of the invention, the cutting mechanism has the normal shape of a pair of knives, one of which is substantially fixed with respect to the frame and disposed transversely to the. strip of material to be cut. The other knife is pivoting and actuated mechanically, that is to say by means of a known cam and spring mechanism, to make it move when necessary in order to allow the passage of the strip. and carrying out, together with the fixed knife, the cutting at the desired time so as to cut the sections of strip to the desired length.
Except in the case described later, the control of this mechanism is under the control of the worker, that is to say it is ensured by a coupling.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
actuated by the usual pedal, the coupling also serving, by means of suitable connections, to rotate the object holder which supports the object on which the strip is applied.
This known construction is not modified and does not require further explanation, the safety device which is the subject of the present invention simply being added to it. It suffices to mention that in order to cut the moving strip under favorable conditions without risk of tearing, it is necessary that at the time of cutting the. tape is in the immediate vicinity of the fixed knife. This condition must be fulfilled and it is ensured by a relative initial adjustment of the disconnector mechanism and of the supported object.
In order to better understand the invention, one embodiment is shown somewhat schematically in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a broken side elevational view of the relevant part of the machine frame.
Fig. 2 is a plan view corresponding to FIG. l,
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 show in side elevation, partially in section, the cutting mechanism in the following different positions: first, the movable knife actuated by spring, at the moment when it is going to cut the strip; secondly, this same knife recalled by the. cam, the. web tension being reestablished; thirdly, this knife at another time of its control by the cam, without tension of the band; and finally, the knife blocked so as to no longer be able to act.
In these drawings, the part of the frame of the machine coming into consideration is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by the reference numeral 14, the knife 1 being actuated by a cam 15 by means of a cam rod 16 subjected to the action of a spring 13 and connected at an angle to a rocker arm 17, of form substantially rhomboidal, which can pivot freely on one of the journals @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a pair of 2 'of a. knife holder comprising two lateral arms 2 and a cross member 2a on which the knife 1 is mounted transversely to the strip 3 to be cut, the frame 14 being provided at each end with supports 4 for receiving the journals.
The rocker 17 'has, between its pivot axis and its rear edge, a stopper 17' which strikes one of the side arms 2 of the knife holder in order to give the knife a forward and upward movement. However, in addition, an interfering stopper 5, the operation of which will be described later, is fixed to one of the journals 2 'and rotates at the same time as the arm 2. On an axis parallel to that of the knife holder. and in an appropriate position relative thereto is mounted a second pivoting frame 6 carried by the journals 7 in end bearings, and forming part of the safety control.
The cam rod 16 is grooved in 16 'for example to be able to slide on one of these journals 7. The frame 6 comprises two pivoting lateral bra.s 6a and 6b, interconnected at their ends, at a certain distance of their pivot axis, by two bars 8 and 9, upper and lower respectively:; slow, between which passes the strip 3, and coming in the immediate vicinity of the fixed knife 10 so that the strip passes in front of the cutting edge of the latter when sectioning occurs. This frame 6 is light, freely mounted and partially balanced in 6 'for example. A second interfering stop member 11 is fixed to the axis of this frame.
The swivel frame 6 can normally occupy any position within certain operating limits, its position at any time being determined by the position of the tensioned strip 3 unwound from the supply reel onto a guide roll 12, between the knives. If band 3 is not stretched (which happens after cutting), this
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
chassis falls at the lowest Inaction of gravity (see Figs. 5 and 6).
. The two stops 5 and 11 are shaped, arranged and arranged with respect to each other in such a way that the controlled knife 1 cannot be actuated by its control spring 13 (see Fig. 1) to perform the sectioning, that when the frame 6 actuated by the tension of the strip 3 has been lifted by the latter in the position shown in FIG. 4, in the immediate vicinity of the level of the fixed knife 10. It is only if this condition is fulfilled that the knife 1 operates to cut the strip, the latter being relieved of the weight of the frame 6 immediately before cutting, by cross member 2a which meets and slightly lifts frame 6.
In all other circumstances, the controlled knife 1 cannot move in the direction required to cut the strip, because the stops 5 and 11 cooperate so as to prevent this displacement as shown in Figs. . 5 and 6.
The function of this mechanism in relation to the operator is therefore as follows: When no operation is in progress, band 3 is not under tension and therefore sectioning cannot be carried out if the operator-dependent control is actuated accidentally or in some specific purpose, as may be necessary during tuning for example. The same applies if an incomplete operation is interrupted for any reason, up to a moment immediately preceding disconnection, due to the release of the tension under the effect of inertia. Normally, that is to say during continuous operation of the machine, the tension of the band 3 is continuous and the hands of the worker are entirely occupied in handling the treated articles.
The time interval between the safety position and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The insecurity of the mechanism is so short that it can be considered as practically instantaneous and it is impossible to bring the fingers from a working position to between the knives: during normal operation.
The fingers can only be caught between the knives when the belt tension is deliberately removed, the hand is inserted between the knives and the foot control is actuated. This requires a deliberate triple action, and therefore cannot happen accidentally.
The invention thus provides complete protection for the worker.
