<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Apparatus for the production of plastic sheets.
The present invention relates to the production of a continuous sheet of molecularly oriented organic polymer and more particularly relates to the production of such a sheet by heating and extruding the polymer in the form of a strip and stretching this strip longitudinally. and transversely to form a molecularly oriented sheet of the desired width and thickness.
It is well known that the strength of certain organic polymers can be appreciably increased by stretching so as to orient the molecules of the polymer in the direction or directions in which the force is applied and thus to capture the orientation forces therein. As examples of these polymers, mention may be made of vinyl compounds and derivatives such as polystyrene, vinyl chloride and copolymers of, or comprising, these compounds or derivatives.
Among the controlling factors of an extrusion process
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of an oriented sheet are the temperature at which the polymer is extruded, the temperature at which the polymer is stretched and the subsequent establishment in the polymer of a temperature capturing the orientation forces introduced by stretching.
A prior U.S. Patent No. 2412187 describes a method and apparatus for producing an oriented sheet of the type described above. The apparatus shown therein comprises an extrusion device and a hopper or die for the production of a continuous ribbon of polymer, an oven for conditioning the extruded ribbon to an optimum draw temperature, means serving. stretching the tape at this latter temperature, means for reducing the temperature of the stretched sheet so as to capture and retain the stretching or orientation forces in the tape after it has been released from the means stretching,
and means in the form of scalloping cylinders located between the stretching means and the hopper for the reduction or elimination of the stretching forces in the part of the tape located between the scalloping rolls and the hopper or extrusion die. As the optimum extrusion temperature for most polymers is higher than the optimum temperature at which the stretching forces must be exerted to establish molecular orientation, the inclusion of scallop rolls, which limit the forces. stretching at the descending part of the tape and reduce or eliminate the stretching forces of the ascending part between the die and the scalloping rolls, allows the use of different optimum temperatures for extrusion and for drawing ,
rather than applying the trade-off of a single extrusion and stretching temperature.
As described in the aforesaid prior patent, the scalloping rollers are preferably operated at a predetermined rate such that the thickness of the tape between the die and the first rolls is not significantly reduced.
In this way, there will be no appreciable stretching of the tape.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
between the end of the die and the cylinders. Actuation of the tape by the rollers can be facilitated by controlling the temperature of the rolls so that the tape adheres to the rolls somewhat. Preferably the effect of the temperature of the rolls on the ribbon is adjusted such that there is surface cooling of the ribbon, leaving more or less heat in the ribbon to facilitate its reheating to a lower temperature determined with a view to the stretching operation.
Obtaining the desired effects on the tape is largely dependent on the total angular envelopment of the tape around the scalloping cylinders, and in practice it has been found desirable to be able to control the extent of this envelopment.
Accordingly, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a sheet extrusion and orienting apparatus of the type illustrated in the mentioned US patent having a roller scalloping mechanism by means of which one can adjust. easily the extent of wrapping from a minimum to a maximum, and at any value in between these limits, without interrupting the passage of the sheets through the scallop cylinders and through the sheet production apparatus of which the scalloping cylinders are part.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus by means of which the number of scalloping rolls in contact with the tape, and the total degree of wrapping can be varied without interrupting the passage of the tape through the rolls.
It has been found desirable to maintain various scalloping cylinders at different temperatures than other cylinders, and to be able to vary the contact of the tape with cylinders at different temperatures independently of each other.
Therefore, another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus by means of which the degree of wrapping around certain scalloping rolls can be independently varied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ment of wrapping around other scalloping cylinders.
Another object of the invention is to provide improvements in the method and apparatus of the type indicated heretofore employed for the manufacture of sheets.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description or from the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of an apparatus comprising a hopper or die, clamp bars and a novel scallop roll assembly for the production of oriented plastic sheets according to the invention, the scallop roll assembly. being shown in section substantially as viewed from line II of FIG, 2.
Fig. 2 is a more detailed view of the scalloping cylinder assembly, the right part of which is in front elevation with part of the casing removed, the left part being a section along line 2-2 of fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2, illustrating the operation of four packing cylinders, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 2 illustrating the actuation of two adjustable cylinders.
Referring to Fig, 1, it will be seen that the main parts of the apparatus illustrated therein comprise an extrusion hopper or die D through which a heated organic polymer such as polystyrene can be forced for example. by means of a forced introduction device (not shown), and extruded in the form of a flat ribbon R; a scallop roll assembly C comprising a group of six scallop rolls, the position of two of them being adjustable to vary between wide limits the wrapping or winding of the tape R around the cylinders, and a clamp-and-stretch mechanism shown at G for stretching the tape into a molecularly oriented sheet form.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Die D is shown only in part and it is understood that a wide variety of dies could be used for the extrusion of plastic tape R. In a similar manner, the claws G shown in FIG. 1, are shown only as an example of a stretching mechanism.
Referring more particularly to the scalloping cylinder assembly C, six actuated cylinders are provided supported so as to be able to rotate parallel to each other in suitable bearings. More particularly, the assembly will comprise a main casing or base member 1 having a pair of parallel vertical side members 2 and 3, and in these are housed the necessary supports including 4b, 5b, 7b and 9b for the cylinders. scallop 4, 5, 7 and 9. Corresponding brackets (not shown) are provided in element 2 which support the other ends of the liners. The cylinder 4 is located adjacent to the die D and in contact with the bottom of the tape R as the latter is extruded horizontally from the die.
The cylinders 5, 7 and 9 are housed below the cylinder 4 and, as illustrated in fig. 1, with the axis of rotation of cylinder 9 higher than that of cylinder 7 and spaced from the latter axis and with the axis of rotation of cylinder 7 higher than that of cylinder 5 and spaced from the latter axis. The arrangement of the rolls T, 7 and 9 is such that the claws G can grip and stretch the tape R in the horizontal direction of the cylinder 5 without making contact of the tape with the rolls 7 and 9.
The side members 2 and 3 are also provided with two pairs of opposed vertical support paths 10a, 10b and 11a, 11b, in which support blocks 10 and 11 respectively are mounted so as to be able to receive vertical movement.
Attached to the ends of blocks 10 and 11 are supports 6a, 6b and 8a, 8b for vertically adjustable scallop cylinders 6 and 8. The cylinder 6 is vertically adjustable between the cylinders 5 and 7; cylinder 8 is also adjustable
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
between the cylinders 7 and 9. Thus, as can be seen from fig, 1, the cylinder 6 can be moved from a position below the cylinders 5 and 7, where it is out of contact with the tape R, in a position above cylinders 5 and 7 where it establishes an enveloping contact which scallops the ribbon.
In a similar fashion, cylinder 8 can be moved from a position below cylinders 7 and 9 where it is out of contact with the tape, to a position above cylinders 7 and 9 where it makes contact with the tape. wrapping and the ribbon is scalloped more.
As illustrated in figs. 1 and 2, the vertical adjustment of each bearing block 10 and 11 and of the cylinders 6 and 8, respectively carried on them, is made by means of lifting screws or jack 12 arranged vertically, which support the blocks 10 and 11 adjacent at their ends. Each block 10 and 11 is provided with two of these jack screws 12, the upper ends of which are determined by boxes 13 fixed for example by means of bolts 14 to the lower sides of the blocks 10 and 11, and which at the same time are prevented from turning by the loose pin connections 15. Each screw 12 is supported by its helical internally threaded nozzle 16 which in turn is supported by its own thrust bearing 17 fixed, for example, by means of bolts 18 to the casing 1.
A helical wheel 19 is attached to the lower end of each nozzle 16.
The pair of helical wheels 19, 19 for the pair of jack screws associated with the block 10 and the adjustable cylinder 6 are provided with a pair of co-acting worms 20920 attached to a shaft 21 mounted for rotation in the parts 22 of the bearings 17 adapted to support a tree. Likewise, a second pair of like worm screws 20,20 are attached to a second shaft 23 and coactively engages the worms which control the vertical adjustment of the pair of jack screws associated with block 11 and its cylinder 8.
Both shafts 21 and 23 can be turned manually
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
for example by means of the handwheels 21a and 23a, the pairs thus actuated of cooacting helical wheels 19,19 and worm 20,20 acting either to raise or to lower simultaneously by an equal amount the two ends of the bearing block supported 10 (or 11) and cylinder 6 (or 8).
Referring now to the details of scallop cylinders 4 through 9 inclusive, they are of similar construction and arrangement. More particularly, each cylinder comprises a hollow shaft 24 closed at one end by a plug or plug 25. The outer surface of each shaft 24 is preferably ground and polished in order to decrease the tendency to produce. scratches or defects in the plastic sheet that comes in contact with it. The temperature of each shaft is controlled by admitting coolant therein through a concentric inner feed tube 26 connected to a feed connection 27.
Coolant is introduced through the annular space 27 between the concentric shaft 24 and the tube 26 and through the discharge or outlet connection 28.
Connections 28 for cylinders 4, 5, 7 and 9 rotatably secure the ends of adjacent cylinders to vertical frame 2, while analogous connections 28 for cylinders 6 and 8 are attached in a similar manner to adjacent ends of the cylinder. frame element 3.
In order to provide a suitable actuation for each of the cylinders, pinions 4d, 5d, 6d, 7 @, 8d and 9d respectively are attached to each cylinder adjacent to the connections 28. As shown in FIG. 3, a chain 29 with idle sprockets 30 and 31 and the driving sprocket 32 together with sprockets 4d, 5d, 7d and 9d provide the actuation system for cylinders 4, 5, 7 and 9. As shown in fig. 3, idler gears 30 and 31 are rotatably mounted on studs attached to frame 2 and drive pinion 32 is attached to drive shaft 33 which is rotatably supported in support members 34a and 34b attached to
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
chassis 1.
The rotation of the motor shaft is effected by the pinion 35 and by a chain system (not shown) with variable speed or other suitable source of energy which allows the synchronization of the speed of extrusion of the strip and of the strip. peripheral speed of the scalloping cylinders.
Also fixed to the shaft 33 is a motor pinion 36 which has the pinions 6d and 8d and a chain 37, and idle pinion 38 form the air supply system for cylinders 6 and 8.
As shown in fig. 4, the actuation comprises a pinion 39 rotatably supported on the outer end of a weighted lever arm 40 which swings freely on the shaft 30 so as to allow vertical adjustment of the cylinders 6 and 8 between their positions. shown in full and in dotted lines in FIG, 4 without interrupting the actuation of the cylinders.
In the operation of the apparatus illustrated and described, the organic polymer, such as polystyrene, from which a biaxially oriented sheet is to be formed, is heated to an optimum extrusion temperature (570 F) and while it is solvent-free. , it is continuously extruded through the die D in the form of a ribbon R which is continuously advanced by the rolls 4 to 9 inclusive towards the prongs G, and the latter draws the ribbon longitudinally from the cylinders as well as transversely. The temperature of the ribbon can be controlled in a predetermined manner in one or more ovens which contain it and by suitable heating means.
Preferably, the motor shaft 33 is rotated so as to approximately synchronize the peripheral speed of the cylinder 4 with the speed of extrusion of the tape. Ribbon R first passes through the rolls in the position shown in solid lines in fig. 1 with the claws G advancing the tape forwards faster than the extrusion speed and with the necessary consequent lengthening of the tape @ being in the tape between the claws and the die. As

the tape in the solid line position shown in fig.
1 engages only the rolls 4 and 5, the total angular envelopment of the tape around the rolls is low and the sliding of the tape on the rolls can take place so that stretching forces are exerted on the part of the roll. tape between die D and cylinder 4. Since the tape is preferably extruded at 4700 F or higher, there is little or no stretching occurring in the tape prior to being extruded. contacting the cylinder 4 which is retained as the permanent orientation, the relatively high temperature acting to release the orientation before the temperature of the ribbon is sufficiently lowered for the polymer to retain its elasticity.
In order to free the portion of tape adjacent to the die from the tensile forces developed by the claws G, the cylinders 6 and 8 are lifted by means of their respective handwheels 21a and 23a, the cylinders 6 and 8 moving from the positions shown in solid lines (fig. 1) first in contact with the tape R and thence to the positions they occupy in broken lines in fig. 1, thus scalloping the ribbon R as shown in broken lines. It is clear that the degree of wrapping of the tape R around each of the rolls 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and therefore the tensile stress in the part of the tape between each adjacent pair of rolls will be able to be controlled by adjusting the vertical arrangement of cylinders 6 and 8.
It is also clear that the adjustment can be done without interrupting the continuous extrusion and the stretching operations.
In order to maintain the necessary contact between cylinders 4 to 9 inclusive and the tape R so that each roll exerts a frictional pull on the tape, it may be necessary to exert at least a slight tensile force on the tape. A portion of tape between die D and roll 4. The result of this is that some stretching of the tape can occur between each pair of adjacent rolls. It has been found that when there is a tendency to produce stretching by

jumps or uneven, which is betrayed by periodic rather than uniform sliding on the cylinders, more particularly on cylinders 8 and 9, this state can be considerably corrected by accelerating said cylinders.
Thus for example, if pinions 4d, 5d and 6d are each provided with 30 teeth, the pinion 7d could be provided with 29 teeth; the 8d pinion with 28 teeth and the 9d pinion with 27 teeth. This tends to ensure uniformity in the slight sliding of the tape R over the rolls as well as consistent uniform extension and corresponding uniform reduction in the width of the tape as it passes over the rolls.
When the material employed is polystyrene, cylinder 4 is preferably cooled to about 60 ° F by circulating water at this temperature, and the remaining cylinders 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are heated to a temperature of 150 to 190 F by circulating water at this temperature.
Various modifications may be made to the method and to the apparatus described without departing from the scope of the invention.
