 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  "Apparatus for supplying a fluid flow device and installation using this apparatus".

   The present invention relates to an apparatus for supplying a device for delivering fluid, in particular oxidizing fluid, extant fluid and others, used for example in underground gasification installations.

   Its aim is to create a device that can be used not only for starting and maintaining fires, for example underground, but also for extinguishing them, if necessary.

   For this purpose, the aforesaid apparatus comprises two conduits, one for supplying the fluid, the other for discharging the latter, these conduits being normally interconnected by a connection device whose disconnection ports

   the / conduit for supplying the fluid with the aforementioned debtor device.

   In an advantageous embodiment of the object of the invention, the connection device consists of a rod provided with two valves and having a stop engaged against a stop member and holding the rod in the position for which one. of the valves closes a bypass from the supply duct to the debtor device and the other valve, which controls the relation between the two ducts, is open, the rod

 being moreover placed under the influence 4J4 * n 9PgaRB ftti4 return mows the 6eapter of the susàik4 positie by a return member which tends to move it away from the aforesaid position and causes the opening of the first valve and the closing of the second as soon as the engagement of the stop against the stop member ceases.

   In another embodiment, the aforementioned connection device comprises a part of fusible material, the presence of which maintains the relationship between the two aforesaid conduits.

   According to another preferred embodiment, the apparatus comprises a chamber communicating with the debtor device and separated, by a piece of fusible material, from another chamber into which the two aforesaid conduits emerge, the orifice of the supply conduit. being placed outside the path traversed by the molten fusible material and outside the space occupied by this molten material, while the orifice of the discharge duct is preferably arranged so as to be closed by the aforesaid piece, when it is melted.

   The present invention also relates to an installation using the apparatus according to the invention. In the case of the underground gasification of combustible deposits, according to the invention, the part of fusible material is placed at the location of the deposit. Finally, such an installation comprising several devices according to the invention is then advantageously used, the various conduits being connected in series, the devices functioning. nant successively as the fire progresses.

   The other details and features of the invention emerge

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 will describe the apparatus and installations in accordance with the invention; given below by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.

   Fig. 1 is a vertical section with partial breaks of a first embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention.

   Fig. 2 is an alternative embodiment of the apparatus shown in FIG.

   FIG. 3 is a detail of the apparatus of FIG. 1, adapted for its use in the gasification of layers of fuel in plateure.

   The fig.l is a side view of a detail of a variant of the device according to fig.2.

   Fig. 5 shows a detail of the apparatus of fig.2.

   Fig. 6 shows schematically and in elevation an installation using apparatus such as that of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 7 is a variant of Figure 6.

   Figs. 8 and 9 are plan views corresponding to the figure.

   In the various figures, the same reference notations designate similar elements. The devices described are of different types, but of similar design.

   In a first embodiment shown in Figure 1, the device comprises a sheath 1, on which is fitted a part 2 in which are mounted two conduits 3 and 4, one for the supply, the other for the evacuation of the fluid.

   The fluid can be of various compositions depending on the role to be performed by the apparatus. If the latter is to be used to start a fire, the fluid will for example be a liquid fuel such as fuel oil. If the combustion needs to be maintained, air, oxygen, water vapor, an

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 carbon dioxide or a mixture of these gases. 'On the other hand, to extinguish a formed fire, any suitable extinguishing gas or liquid will be used.

   A fluid delivery device formed of nozzles 8 is mounted in a supply duct 9. The nozzles 8 allow the fluid to be projected.

   A rod 6 carries two valves 5 and 7, the second of which, normally open, is mounted between the conduits 3 and 4. The valve 5 normally closes the supply conduit 9.

   The rod 6 carries an end plate 15 which rests on the ends of two angled levers 16 mounted on shafts 17. The arms 19 of these levers are articulated on a link 18. The latter carries a stop 31 formed of a washer in fusible material threaded at its lower end and held by a nut 35 against a stop member 36 integral with a steel tube 20 extending the sheath 1. The rod 18 does not can therefore rise and the plate 15 cannot descend, despite the antagonistic action of a spring 10 mounted between the valve 7 and a cap 11 fixed to the part 2. If the stop 31 melts, the rod 18 rises, the spring 10 closes valve 7 and opens valve 5; Fluid, which entered at 3 and exited at 4, is then directed towards the supply duct 9 and the nozzles 8.

   To initially adjust the device, a cap 37 terminating the tube 20 (fig.l) is unscrewed so as to have access to the end of the rod 18. The spring 10 is compressed by acting on a lever 13 articulated to the end of a support 14 fixed on the cap 11. The lever 13 can pivot at the end of an arm 12 which actuates the rod 6. The valve 5 is thus closed and the various elements are kept in their position until the stop 31 has been fixed by the nut 35. The lever 13 can then be released.

   Once the appliance has been set, it can be mounted in an installation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tion for underground gasification (fig. 6).

   The tube 20 is immersed in the layer of fuel 34, formed for example of coal or lignite, while the middle part of the apparatus, with its nozzles 8, is mounted in a layer of sand 38. The upper part of the device. the appliance is built into a concrete base 33.

   The stop 31 will advantageously be made of tin, the melting point of which is 232 C.

   As soon as the fire zone approaches sufficiently the stop 31, the latter melts, the rod 18 rises and the spring 10 closes the valve 7, thus interrupting the communication between the conduits 3 and 4. The valve 5 opens. and the fluid coming from the pipe, 3 feeds the nozzles 8.

   These nozzles are preferably three in number and are arranged so that their longitudinal axes are inclined along arrows 41 to 43, which form with the direction of advance 44 of the fire zone angles which are preferably d. 'about 10.20 and 45 degrees. In this way, the jets of fluid exiting through the orifice 40 are well distributed.

   Close to these nozzles, one or more ignition systems are provided, for example consisting of two carbon electrodes 22 (fig.l) between which a spark can be made to fly, when a sufficient electrical voltage is applied to them. Conductors 23 connect these electrodes to a voltage source 29. The electrodes and nozzles are placed in a housing 32. When ignition has occurred and the fire zone has approached sufficiently, the layer of combustion. The target is destroyed in the vicinity of the tube 20 and the sand flows out, allowing the jets of ignited fluid to reach the intact part of the layer 34. Usually a series of apparatus is placed, the conduits of which are connected in a row. series (fig. 6). The first device is used for the initial firing.

   To this end, this device has no fuse stop 31, so that the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 valves 5 and 7 are respectively open and closed and the nozzles 8 are supplied as soon as the fluid from a reservoir 28 is delivered by a pump 30 (FIG. 6). It suffices to close the circuit of the voltage source to cause the ignition. It is the line 3 of the last apparatus which is connected to the pump 30, so that the fluid passes through all the conduits 3 and 4 put in series to arrive at the first apparatus serving for the initial firing. .

   If the fluid used is gasoline or fuel oil, air inlet orifices 21 are provided in duct 1. The devices are generally mounted in the gallery serving to supply the fire zone. by oxidizing, which is often air.

   As soon as the fire zone moves along the arrow 44, and arrives near the second device, the fusible stopper of the latter melts and the nozzles 8 of the device in question are supplied.

   If the fire goes out between two devices, fluid is sent through the various conduits 3 and 4 connected in series, so that the nozzles of the devices, whose fuse stops have melted, are supplied and it is sufficient to close the electrical circuit. rodes 22 corresponding to the device with which we want to pro. reduce re-ignition.

   If you want to use a plaited layer (fig. 7 to 9), a connection 25 must be provided between the nozzles 8 and the supply pipe 3 (fig. 3). The rod 18 must then be divided into two normal parts to each other and connected by an angled lever 27.

   The connector 25 can rotate around the horizontal axis of the tube 20, so that its position can be changed according to the direction of advance of the fire zone (fig. 8 and 9). A protective wall 45 separates the apparatus from the fuel layer 34.

   In Figure 2, there is shown another embodiment

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 tion of the device. The lower part 46 of the sheath 1 is separated from the rest by a plug 47 of fusible material. The conduits 3 and 4 extend beyond this plug and open into the chamber 48 formed in the lower portion of the part 46. As soon as the plug 47 melts, the fusible material collects at the base of the tube. part 46 which forms the reservoir. This molten material clogs the orifice of conduit 4 which is located at a lower level than that of conduit 3 which remains outside the path of the material which melts. The duct 3 is then in communication via the sheath 1 with the nozzles 8. The lower end of the duct 4 could be bent upwards, so that the material which melts falls into the orifice of this duct.

   The orifice of duct 3 could then be located at any level in relation to that of duct 4.

   There is also an electric ignition system formed of two electrodes 22.

   If several devices conforming to that of Figure 2 are available in an installation such as that of Figure 6, conduits 3 and 4 are connected in series. The nozzles 8 of an apparatus are supplied as soon as the proximity of the fire zone melts the fusible plug 47. For the initial firing apparatus, the fusible plug 47 is removed and a plug 24 is placed (fig. 5) on the appliance's exhaust duct 4.

   The re-ignition is carried out in the same way as for the installation of figure 6. For the operation in plateure, a connector 25 and elbows 26 are provided on the conduits 3 and 4.
It is understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described above, and that many modifications can be made thereto, in particular as regards the form, the constitution, the number and the arrangement of the parts. elements involved in its realization, without departing from the scope of the present patent application, provided that these changes are compatible with the spirit of the claims enunciated.
