<EMI ID=14.1>

The present invention relates to a device
ribbon drive suitable for devices
or printing machines, especially punch card printing tabulators.
This device includes two spools for winding and unwinding the ink ribbon, with a mechanism
reversal.
The ink ribbon drive has an electro-magnetic clutch for each ribbon spool, these clutches working so that when one clutch is active to positively drive one spool, the clutch of the other spool is also active and tends to drive the tape in the other direction, however with less driving force, so that the resulting effect is braking which produces an appropriate tape tension. One characteristic of the invention is therefore to make one of the electromagnetic clutches and the other tensioner a driver by virtue of a difference in the intensity of the current in the two devices.
Continuously feeding the ribbon does not present any inconvenience for these kinds of printing machines, since a spring tensioner is provided for the ribbon, which tensioner, when the ribbon is stopped by the striking of the characters, gives the possibility for the driving clutch device to continue its movement, although part of the tape is stopped, which prevents deterioration of the tape. When the characters leave contact with the ribbon, the tensioner returns to its original position by producing, thanks to a spring, on the ribbon a force greater than that exerted by that of the clutch devices which at this time plays the role of tensioner.
The description which follows, with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text being, of course, part of it. said invention.

on one of the two flanges 19 and 20 of the printing device of a punch card tabulator. By way of example, the drive of this printing machine is shown schematically in fig. 2.
The main shaft 24 of the printing machine fixed a toothed wheel not shown which is in constant mesh with the main shaft of a punch card tabulator, and rotates in synchronism with the tabulator. On the shaft 24 is fixed a ratchet, not shown, which forms part of a clutch.

so that, by the mechanism which will be described, the ribbon is driven at a suitable distance.
The printing device is a device with rotating wheels provided with characters. Clearly any other printing device could be used.
Ink ribbon 113 sits between the character wheel
43 and the printing roller 44, guided, in a manner which will be described, by different rollers, to end on each side to the reels, fig. 1.
Since the two electromagnetic drive devices which each drive one of the two coils are similar or symmetrical, it will suffice below to describe only one in detail. The wheel 37, fig. 2, 5 and 7 is fixedly mounted on the shaft 35 which is supported by the two flanges
19 and 20 and crosses them. The wheel 48 is fixed on the shaft 47 supported by the two bearings 53,54 housed in two rings
55,56,:. Fixed in the recesses of the frame 57, itself
attached to the flange of the printing device. On the other side of the printing machine, the shaft 35 carries the wheel 37a, fig.5, which drives the wheel 48a fixed on the shaft 47a of the other similar or symmetrical tape drive.
On shaft 47, fig. 6 and 7 is pinned a worm 58 continuously engaged with the teeth 60 cut in the wall of a bowl 61. On this bowl is fixed
or riveted a core 62, which can rotate freely on the shaft
63, which bears a shoulder 65 which forms a support for the cup on one side, and which itself bears on the other side against a bearing 66 housed in the ring 69 itself fixed in a recess of the frame 57. Riveted on the shaft 63 is a sleeve 67 carrying a lug 68 which is engaged in a hole
of the tape winding spool 70 mounted on .. the shaft
63 and held in position by the thumb nut 71 screwed onto the shaft 63. The cup 61 carries on the outside on its lower side a ring 72 made of insulating material. This ring,
which has a T-shaped section, wears two copper rings
73 and 74, against each of which the end of two brushes 75 and 76 rests, fig. 5, attached to the other end
by screws 77 and 78 to an insulating part 80, itself fixed to the frame 57. Each brush further carries two screws 81 and 82 for fixing the current supply wires. The lower part of the bowl presses lightly against the disc

ment 85 pinned to the shaft 63. In said sleeve 85 are riveted two pins 86 and 87 which penetrate through their upper end into two corresponding holes of the disc 84, allows. so much to this one a slight movement in the vertical direction,
to stick against the edges of the bowl as the current flows through the coil 64.
The lower end of the shaft 63 is guided in
the bearing 90 fixed in the bearing 91 itself fixed on
a circular ring 92-93 of the frame 57. Fitted onto the core 62 is the coil 64, the two output wires of which pass through a recess in the cup and are welded to the two rings 73,74.
The frame 57 has a hole in which is engaged
'a vertical axis 94, fig.6, which carries riveted on its upper end the hub 95 of a lever 96, fig. 1 and 7. The end of this lever carries a vertical extension 98, fig. 6 and 7, provided with a slot 100 through which the tape passes. At the lower part of the axis 94 is fixed by a screw 101, a sleeve 102, fig. 6 and 5 on which is riveted a lever 103 which carries at its end a button of insulating material 104 adjacent to a contact blade 105. In the case of the right drive, fig.5, the button 104 acts on the blade 105 to close a contact 106 when the ribbon rotates said lever 96, and in the case of the left drive the corresponding button acts on the corresponding blade.

made by an eyelet riveted to both ends of the ribbon in a well-known manner. The contact 106, fig.6, comprises the contact blade against contact 107. The two blades 105 and 107 are fixed; electrically isolated from each other and from the frame, by screws 108, fig. 5. Each blade has exit screws
111 and 112 for fixing the current supply wires.
On each flange 19,20 is fixed by screws 130,
130a, fig. 1, 3 and 4, an angle 131, 131a, which can pivot -

rollers forming a guide for the tape 113. The tape 113, fig.4, passes from the winding spool 70, on the guide roller
114 of the tensioner, the guide roller 115, the slot of the lever
96, and on the rollers 116 and 117. From the latter, the ribbon passes between the printing wheels 43 and the printing roller 44 to end at the roller 117a similar to the roller .117 and fixed on the angle iron 131a, for arrive at the second winding reel 70a by a device of symmetrical rollers. On its path the tape can pass through other guides already known in the old tape drive devices and it is not necessary to describe in more detail.
The roller 114, fig. 4, is fixed to the end of an arm of the angled lever 121 which can pivot about the axis 122 of the roller 115 and which is biased by a spring
123 attached at one end to an arm of the lever 121, and at the other end to a spring clip 134 attached to the cor-

towards the print roller. The tape is slightly inclined relative to the horizontal to prevent the row of type wheels which are on the same horizontal line
do not strike at the same height on the tape.
<EMI ID = 14.1>
The whole system is supplied 'by the terminals A and B. In the position of the contacts which is shown', the tape is driven by the clutch actuated by the spool 64 and it therefore runs from right to left on the pin 1 . Indeed,
<EMI ID = 15.1>
circuit is closed by potentiometer R.l. the other clutch, actuated by coil 64a, is supplied in series with a contact 109d; the circuit is closed by potentiometers R.2 and R.l. The current flowing through coil 64a is therefore lower than that flowing through coil 64. The clutch comprises
<EMI ID = 16.1>
dre the ribbon. The two potentiometers R.l and R.2 allow the current to be adjusted in an appropriate manner. When the ribbon is completely unwound from the spool 70 located to the right of FIG. 1, the eyelet of the tape causes the lever 96a to tilt, which causes the contact 106a to close, FIG. 6 and 8,
and energizes a '109 relay. The excitement of this relay 109

in series with potentiometers R.2 and R.l. The current of the coil 64 therefore becomes weaker than the current flowing through
<EMI ID = 19.1>
so the tape until it is fully unwound from
<EMI ID = 20.1>
ban will tilt lever 96, which will cause momentary opening of contact 106, de-energize relay 109 and return the contacts to their initial position shown in freeze 8. The tape will therefore change direction again and will be driven by the clutch commanded by coil 64. When contact 106 closes again after the passage of 1 [deg.] eyelet, relay 109 cannot be energized, contact 109a being open.
In the execution mode: described, each coil 64
