 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 trodes 11.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 nable.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

      formateur de puissance tel qu'il est déterminé par des prises de changement 13. Par des moyens bien connus des électriciens, ces résistances peuvent être intercalées dans le circuit ou déta- chées de celui-ci par les mêmes moyens qui modifient les prises du transformateur de puissance T. Le rhéostat 62 sert en réalité de moyen pour déterminer le courant qui circule dans l'arc élec- trique tandis que la résistance variable 61 fonctionne conjoin- tement avec les ressorts 40 pour faire varier la sensibilité de la commande.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 20>

 appended in which:
Fig. 1 is a schematic view showing an electric arc furnace control system incorporating the features of the invention.

   Fig. 2 is a partial schematic view illustrating a modified construction of the electrical control portion of the system.

   Although the invention is susceptible to various modifications and variations in construction, it is represented herein and will be described hereinafter in a preferred embodiment and an alternative. The invention should not however be limited by this fact to the particular shapes shown. On the contrary) it covers all the construction variants falling within the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

   The electric arc furnace control system, as shown by way of example in FIG. 1, generally comprises an electric arc furnace 5, motive force means generally designated by 6 to effect the movement of the electrodes of the furnace towards the molten mass and from the latter, safety means designated d 'generally by 7 and electric control means 8 for the motive force means, actuated to maintain the electrodes of the oven in the desired position. The electric arc furnace 5, as well as the rest of the construction, is shown schematically only, with 9 representing the main part of the furnace containing the melt 10.

   The furnace is of the three-phase type and therefore comprises three electrodes 11, each of which can be approached and moved apart independently of the melt. Power is supplied to the electrodes by means of a transformer T having a Y-connected primary P and a delta-connected S secondary, with a conductor 12 running from each tip of the delta to one of the electrodes.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 Trodes 11. Taps are preferably provided on the secondary or on the primary of the transformer in order to obtain different power inputs to the arc. Sockets 13 are here indicated as provided on the primary winding P.

   Each of the electrodes 11 is movable independently of the other electrodes as already indicated and, for this purpose, each of them has its own motive force means 6 and its own electric control means 8. Like the force means motive power and the electrical control system are the same for each of the electrodes 11, only one of the motive force means and a single control system have been shown which will be described below. It should be realized, however, that there are in reality three such motive power means and three electrical control systems.

   To obtain the advantage of rapid acceleration and deceleration, instant reversals and other advantages will become apparent from the description. The motive force means comprise a hydraulic motor which here has the form of a. a reciprocating piston engine, comprising a cylinder 14 with an opening opening at each of its ends and a piston 15 in reciprocating motion in the cylinder. A piston rod 16 extends in both axial directions from the piston 15 and passes through the bottoms of the cylinder 14 so that there is no difference in volume between the opposite ends of the cylinder. At one end of the piston 16, a counterweight 17 has been attached thereto for balancing the weight of an electrode 11.

   At its other end, the piston rod 16 is intended to engage for operation with one of the electrodes 11. Although the means for transmitting the movement and force of the piston 15 to the electrode can vary greatly, it is possible to vary greatly. has shown them here as composed of a cable 18 connected at one end to an electrode 11 and wound at the other end around the drum 19 of a winch 20. The cable 18 obviously passes over pulleys 21 arranged in a suitable position.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 nable. The end of the piston rod 16 carries a pulley 22 in engagement with the cable 18 between the winch and the electrode, so as to effect a motive force lifting of the electrode while relying on gravity to lower the electro-, that is to say, to bring it closer to the molten mass.

   The winch 20 is preferably hand operated, which allows the electrode to be raised and lowered by hand when necessary or desired.

   The fluid supplied to cylinder 14 is controlled by a regulator generally designated 25, which here is of the "Askania" injection type. Such a regulator generally comprises an injection pipe 26 from which a pressurized fluid exits. The jet is directed against a plate having two closely spaced orifices 27 and 28 with the injection pipe movably mounted, preferably pivotally, so as to be able to be directed with a view to striking the two orifices to an equal degree or to a greater degree one of the orifices and to a lesser degree the other of the orifices.

   Although the injection pipe can deliver various fluids and act to regulate the supply of fluid to cylinder 14 indirectly, that is to say through other devices, the fluid here delivered by the cylinder. injection pipe 26 is oil and is the same oil which is supplied to cylinder 14 in order to obtain a more direct and immediate response to any movement of injection pipe 26. For this purpose it is starts from the orifice 27 a duct 29 connected to the slot opening into the upper end of the cylinder 14, in FIG. 1. From the orifice 28 leaves a duct 30 connected to the port opening into the lower end of the cylinder 14.

  In the conduit 30 is interposed a check valve 31 acting to close the conduit 30 and prevent the flow of fluid in the conduit 30 to the lower end of the cylinder 14, but opening to allow free flow and without restriction

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

Release the fluid out of the lower end of cylinder 14.

  A duct 32 containing a manually adjustable measuring valve 33 has been mounted around the check valve 31 as a bypass. Between the conduits 29 and 30 is mounted a connecting conduit 34 containing a shut-off valve 35, operable by hand, interposed in the conduit. In conduits 29 and 30, near their point of connection to ports 27 and 28, there has been interposed a rotary main control valve of any well known type capable of rendering motive force means operable for the control. automatic, that is to say the command by the regulator 25 or to cut the regulator and oblige the fluid to be supplied under pressure either to the upper end of the cylinder 14 to lift the electrode 11 , or at the lower end of cylinder 14 to lower electrode 11.

  It is frequently necessary to adjust such a valve 36 from a remote point. This remote control of the valve 36 is here represented by the dial 37, the handle 38 and appropriate means represented at 39 for connecting the handle 38 and the valve 36.

   The injection pipe 26 of the regulator 25 is biased by a compression spring 40 in one direction to effect the lifting of the electrode 11. This spring bears at one end against the injection pipe 26 and on the back. the other end against an adjusting wheel 41 carried on a fixed part of the regulator. There may or may not be, at will, in the regulator a second compression spring 42 acting in opposition to the spring 40. This spring 42 is also a compression spring bearing at one end against a fixed part of the regulator. , with the other end acting on the injection pipe 26, but the spring 42 is never strong enough to overcome the action of the spring 40.

   To control the regulator which in turn controls

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 the motive force means 6, provision has been made for the aforementioned electrical control system 8, established so as to operate under the effect of certain characteristics of the arc in order to maintain in the arc a certain final state and longed for. For this purpose, the regulator 25 has been combined with means providing a torsional torque formed here by the components representing the current flowing in the arc and the voltage at the terminals of the arc. These means comprise a beam balance 43 pivoting between its ends on a pivot 44 and comprising an arm 45 rigidly fixed to the beam and extending at right angles from its pivot point, arm 45 against which one end bears. spring 42.

   Between the arm 45 and the injection pipe 26 is a motion transmission member 47. A core 48 and a solenoid 49 have been suspended by a pivot from one end of the balance beam 43, while one has suspended. pivoted at the opposite end of the balance beam a core 50 and a solenoid 51. The solenoid 49 is made capable of operating under the effect of the voltage across the arc and, for this purpose , it comprises a coil 52 which is preferably supplied with the voltage across the arc through a transformer 53 comprising a primary winding 54 and a secondary winding 55.

   The secondary winding is connected to the coil 52 by the conductors
56 and 57. A terminal of the primary winding 54 is connected by a conductor 58 to the metal shell forming part of the element 9 containing the main molten material in the electric furnace. The other terminal of the primary winding 54 is connected to the conductor 12 by a conductor 59 in which interposed a light 60, a variable resistor 61, an adjustable rheostat 62, a number of tap switch resistors 63 and a switch 64.

   The tap-switch resistors 63 are provided to allow adjustment of the circuit for coil 52 to match the voltage applied to the trans-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

      power trainer as determined by change taps 13. By means well known to electricians, these resistors can be interposed in the circuit or detached from it by the same means which modify the taps of the transformer power T. Rheostat 62 actually serves as a means to determine the current flowing in the electric arc while variable resistor 61 works in conjunction with springs 40 to vary the sensitivity of the control.

   The sensitivity is increased as the force of the spring 40 is decreased and the sensitivity can be made very high, ie full drive speed, for as little as two or three percent change in load. For practical applications, however, the sensitivity will be set for full speed for all deviations greater than ten percent of load change and at a rate proportional to the change in load for deviations less than ten percent - hundred..

   It must be understood that the electrical control system of FIG. 1 is that of an electrode only. The complete system will obviously include three solenoids 49 and therefore three transformers 53 each with its primary windings 54. In this complete system, the primary windings 54 of the three transformers 53 are connected in Y through the secondary S of the transformer T, with the conductor. 58 as a common conductor running from the center or common socket in the Y-connected windings 54 to one side of the furnace.

   With this connection, the coil 52 of all the solenoids 49 is energized immediately upon the application of electrical energy to the transformer T even though no arcing has been established in the furnace, the windings 54 being in one position. well known way in pairs through the windings of the secondary S of transformer T. When establishing an arc, each winding 54

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 is capable of operating under the effect of the voltage at the arc terminals of the particular electrode with which the winding is associated.

   Switch 64 is under the control of cable 18 and operates to cause the electrode to lift up whenever cable 18 becomes loose. The switch 64 therefore has a fixed contact 65 and a movable contact 66, the movable contact being separated from the fixed contact by a compression spring 67.

   The movable contact 66 carries a pulley or follower 68 placed so as to circulate on the cable 18, with the switch as a whole in a position such that when the cable is stretched, that is to say when the electrode is supported by the cable outside the molten mass, the switch is closed, but as soon as a certain role appears in the cable, the spring 67 forces the top of the switch to open, which cuts off the circuit to a transformer 53 and de-energizes the solenoid 49 and results in an immediate lifting of the electrode by the hydraulic motor.

   The solenoid 51 has a coil 70 similar to the coil 52 and this coil is energized in accordance with the current flowing in the arc, the energization being again made by means of a transformer 71. The primary 72 of this The transformer is connected to the coil 73 of a current transformer while the secondary winding 74 is connected by the conductors 75 and 76 to the coil 70. The terminals of the conductors 75 and 76 have been connected and in parallel relative to the coil 70, to adjust the response thereof to the current flowing in the arc, a variable resistor 77. The coils 52 and 70 are chosen in order to provide appropriate torque values in the beam 43 for the smallest current and smallest vol- tage to be controlled.

   For higher current and voltage up to maximum loads, torque values are maintained

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 the same as for the minimum loads by means of the variable resistors 61 and 77, so as to maintain maximum sensitivity to all the loads.

   The fluid delivered by the injection pipe to actuate the hydraulic motor is supplied by a pump 80 actuated by an electric motor 81. The pump sucks fluid from a reservoir 82 and delivers it into a conduit 83 leading to the injection pipe. - tion 26. The fluid delivered by the injection pipe 26 is collected by suitable and usual means and returned to the reservoir 82 by a pipe 84. An overflow valve 85 is connected to the pipe 83 to provide a bypass return of the fluid to the reservoir 82, if the pressure in the conduit 83 rises above the value for which the overflow valve is set.

   The motor 81 can be connected by conductors 86 and 87 to a phase of the circuit supplying the power transformer T. As the motor is an electric motor, the pump would cease to operate and consequently fluid would no longer be supplied. by the pump to the injection pipe in the event of an electrical power failure. In order that under these circumstances the electrode 11 can be lifted into the withdrawn position so as to reduce the possibility of damage thereto, measures are taken to provide auxiliary fluid which comes into play in this case. For this purpose, an auxiliary reservoir 88 has been provided, intended to be filled with oil to a certain level and maintained under a desired pressure by compressed air.

   From the bottom of the auxiliary tank 88, a conduit 89 flows. to the conduit 83, so that the oil in the reservoir 88 can take the place of the oil normally supplied by the pump 80 in the event of failure of the electric power. An air inlet condmit 90, supplied by a suitable source (not shown), opens at the top of the reservoir. At the top of the auxiliary tank also opens

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 an air outlet passage 91, normally controlled by a float valve 92 provided to ensure the conservation of the appropriate quantity of oil in the reservoir.

   Also associated in a control relation with the air supply pipe 91 is the solenoid actuated valve 93, connected by the conductors 94 to the conductors 86 and 87 and operable when energized to remain open and closing the valve. air duct 91 when it is de-energized. A second solenoid actuated valve 95 is interposed in conduit 83 between the pump and the flow point of conduit 89 in conduit 83. This valve is connected by conductors 96 to conductors 94 and operates to remain open when is energized and to close on de-energization so as to prevent the auxiliary reservoir fluid from discharging backwards through the pump 80.

   In order to ensure the maintenance of a suitable air pressure at the top of the reservoir, the valves 97 and 98 are interposed in the duct 90 for the air inlet. The valve 97 is actuated by a device 99 operating under the effect of pressure. , connected so as to respond to the air pressure at the top of the auxiliary tank and operative to open the valve when the pressure in the tank falls below a desired value, for example 100 pounds per square inch.

   The valve 98 is also actuated by a device 100 operating under the effect of the pressure which is mentioned above, so as to respond to the pressure in the conduit 90 between the valves 97 and 98, and operates in a controlled manner. namely opposite, / to close the valve 98 when the pressure in the conduit 90 falls below the desired pressure. By virtue of this valve, the loss of air pressure from the reservoir 88 is avoided in the event of failure of the air supply source.

   For the best understanding of the invention, its operation will be briefly described. It will be assumed that the handle

 Control 38 has been rotated to the automatic position, which causes the main valve 36 to assume a position whereby the hydraulic motor is under control of the governor and the electrical control system. It will further be assumed that the taps 13 have been set to provide the desired power to the oven and that no power is yet supplied, as the resistors 63 have been set correspondingly, that the rheostat 62 has been set to give the desired current value in the electric arc and that resistors 61 and'77 have been adjusted to provide the desired sensitivity of the control.

   Assuming that the engine 81 has been started and operates the pump 80 in such a way that pressurized fluid is discharged through the injection pipe 26, as there is no voltage on the oven and consequently no energization of the voltage coil 52, the spring 40 overcomes the action of the 42 and rotates the injection pipe 26 counterclockwise in the direction of clockwise / FIG. 1, so as to strike the orifice 27, which supplies fluid to the upper end of the cylinder 14 and forces the piston 15 downwards to lift the associated electrode 11. This condition obviously exists for each of the three electrodes.

   If then power is supplied to the primary of transformer T, the voltage coil 52 of the solenoid 49 is energized because the switch 64 is closed as the cable is taut and supporting the electrode and because the winding 54 is in connection across a branch of the secondary 8, as described above. The coil 70 of the current solenoid 51, however, remains de-energized because so far no arcing has been established. The coil 52 therefore attracts its core 48 with a force such that it overcomes the action of the spring 40 and causes the injection pipe 26 to pivot in the direction of clockwise.

   The fluid delivered by the injection pipe 26 frap-

 eg maintaining orifice 28, which supplies fluid to the lower end of cylinder 14 and causes piston 15 to rise with resulting lowering of associated electrode 11. Note that although fluid delivered by injection pipe 26 squarely hits port 28, the rate at which fluid is supplied to the lower end of cylinder 14 is controlled by metering valve 33, as valve 31 prevents the flow of fluid to the cylinder, which ensures that the electrode does not descend with such rapidity as to strike the molten mass with sufficient force to break the electrode.

   All the electrodes normally strike the bath at substantially the same time, with the result that the arcs are established from one electrode to the other via the melt. As soon as the arcs are established, current flows through the conductors 12 and therefore the current coil 70 is energized to attract its core 50 and add its force to that of the spring 40. As the electrodes are very close to the melt, the arc is short and therefore the current flow is high and the voltages at the arc terminals are low and the coil 70 is then energized with sufficient force to overcome, with the help of the spring 40 , the strength of the voltage coil 52.

   The injection pipe 26 is then pivoted in an anti-clockwise direction, which causes its jet to be sent to a greater extent on the orifice 27 than on the orifice 28. and results in a downward movement of the piston 15 and a lifting or withdrawal of the electrode 11. When the electrode is lifted, the arc naturally becomes longer, the voltage drop increases as the current flows. decreases, with corresponding effects on the voltage and current coil 52 and 70 respec-

 tively, and with this result that d3jT [L't.i'htëffëcie'ëuii point where the forces acting on the injection pipe 26 are balanced.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 / brées; the piston 15 then comes to rest and remains in this position as long as these conditions prevail.

   If for any reason the arc goes out, the current coil 70 is immediately deserted while the voltage coil 52 remains energized and is further strongly energized, which overcomes the action of the spring 40. and causes the regulator to perform an immediate lowering of the electrode until the arc is again reestablished and extended for a length producing the desired current flow. If the molten mass collapses so as to cut off the arc length, the current coil 70 will be strongly energized while the voltage coil 52 will be less strongly energized, resulting in the regulator forcing the voltage. electrode to lift.

   This happens quickly because the conduit 29 from port 27 to the intended upper end of cylinder 14 is / un-throttled, so the electrode will be removed before it can be damaged.

   If one of the electrodes, at the start of operation of the furnace, reaches the molten mass in such a way that it is sufficiently ahead of the other two electrodes so that an arc is not established or if, for a another reason, no arc is established when the electrode touches the molten mass, the system provided here stops the downward movement of the electrode which could cause the rupture of the electrode while at the same time maintaining time the electrode suspended on the melt to allow the arc to establish as soon as conditions are suitable. If, therefore, an electrode strikes the molten mass without an arc being established, a slack will appear in the cable 18 with the result that the switch 64 opens.

   This would de-energize the voltage coil 52 and return the regulator to the control of the spring 40, which would then rotate the injection pipe 26 to cause the movement of the piston 15 in a direction to lift the electrode. This movement of the piston 15

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 in a direction raising the electrode will energize the cable 18, which closes the switch 64 energizing the vol- tage coil 52 which will overcome the action of the spring 40 and cause the regulator to supply fluid to the cylinder 14 at a rate. way producing the will be suspended lowering of the electrode. It is therefore seen that the electrode / above the bath until the arc is established.

   If after establishing the arc, wire 18 becomes loose for any reason such as melt sag, switch 64 will open and voltage coil 52 will be de-energized, with a rapid and immediate movement of the piston 15 in a direction withdrawing the electrode.

   If a power failure occurs, it would obviously be desirable to remove the electrodes. This result is obtained, although the motor 81 does not actuate the pump 80, because of the reserve of fluid maintained under pressure. A power failure would obviously result in the de-energization of the voltage coil 52 and also of the current 7) which would re-establish the control of the injection pipe 26 by the spring 40 exclusively, which would then rotate the injection pipe. in a direction causing the electrode to lift. Although the pump 80 does not deliver fluid, a sufficient quantity of fluid to lift the electrode will be delivered by the auxiliary reservoir 88.

   The power failure will de-energize the solenoid valves 93 and 95, which closes the air supply port 91 and closes the valve 95 to prevent the backflow of fluid from the auxiliary tank, through the pump. A transition of the supply of fluid to the injection pipe, from the pump to the auxiliary tank therefore takes place immediately and without interrupting the flow of the jet.

   It is obviously only necessary that the reservoir contains sufficient fluid to deliver the piston 15 associated with each of the three electrodes, on

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 that its entire lifting stroke of the electrode, seen / the weight of an electrode is counterbalanced and that when it is lifted it remains in the lifted position without ensuring a constant supply of pressurized fluid at the end upper cylinder 14.

  If even the air supply to the auxiliary tank is missing, the air already in the tank and under pressure will be. enclosed by the closing of the valve 98, which is actuated by a pressure responsive device operating under the effect of the reigning 90, provided pressure in the duct / to the air supply / between the valves 97 and 98. This pressurized air trapped in the top of the tank is sufficient to produce a lift of the electrodes.

   In the modified form of the invention shown in FIG. 2, measures have been taken so that the system responds only to the current flowing in the arc, unlike the system / current and voltage which has been described above, but at the same time the characteristic that an electrode is forced to hover above the melt until the arc is established. This is accomplished in the modified form by a change in the voltage responsive medium, the remainder of the system being retained as described above. Consequently, when the systems are similar, the parts or elements shown in FIG. 2 have been designated by the same reference figures, with a prime index.

   It will suffice to say that the modified form of the invention comprises an electric arc furnace 51 comprising an electrode 11 'supplied with electrical energy from a transformer T' whose secondary S 'has its winding. - ment connected in delta, with each junction or angle connected by a conductor 12 'to one of the electrodes 11'. Each electrode is moved towards or away from the molten mass by a hydraulic motor comprising a cylinder 14 'and a piston 15', the latter piston 15 'acting to raise or lower the electrode by the in-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 via an 18 'cable. The arrival of the fluid to the cylinder 14 'takes place under the control of a regulator 25' of the injection pipe type.

   This regulator includes, among other things, a compression spring 40 'acting to rotate an injection tube 26' in a direction causing the electrode to withdraw from the melt. For controlling the regulator, a means providing a torque is provided, comprising a beam 43 'with a solenoid 51' associated therewith and operates at the actuator terminals under the effect of the flowing current. arc of the electrode, to help the compression spring 40 ', as described above.

   A solenoid 105 is intended to act in opposition to the spring 40 'and comprises a coil 106 and a core 107. The core is connected to the beam 43', at the end opposite the solenoid 51 ', by means of' a tension spring 108 and the movement of the core under the influence of the coil 106 when energized is limited by a stop 109, so that the stress produced by the solenoid is fixed and independent of the amount of excitation of coil 106. Coil 106 is intended to be energized under normal conditions when a voltage is applied to the electrode, although this excitation is dependent on the proper positioning of the electrode. electrode 11 '.

   To this end, the coil 106 is connected across a phase of the secondary winding S 'of the transformer T', by means of conductors 110 and 111. In the conductor III a switch 64 'has been incorporated. associated with the cable 18 'so as to be closed when the cable is stretched and to open upon release of the appearance of a / in the cable, which occurs when the electrode rests on the molten mass.

   The operation of this modified form of the invention is generally similar to that described for the pre-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 19>

 fair and it will therefore be assumed that it is easily understood. It will suffice to say that during the application of electric energy to the transformer T 'the coil 106 is energized, attracts the core 107 downwards to the limit of its movement, determined by the stop 109, this which energizes the spring 108 the action and thus imposes a stress on the regulator surmounting /, 'of the spring 40', with the result that the regulator effects a lowering of the electrode by the hydraulic motor.

   If, when the electrode comes into contact with the molten mass an arc is established, the current coil of the solenoid 51 'is energized and, as indicated, it adds to the action of the spring that of the 40'. so as to overcome / spring 108 and to pivot the injection pipe 26 'to produce a lift of the electrode. As the electrode is lifted and the arc is extended, the current flowing in the arc is obviously reduced and with the reduction in the current the force of the solenoid 51 'is reduced to such an extent that the jet delivered by the injection pipe 26 'strikes in equal measure the orifices 27' and 28 'to stop the hydraulic motor and at the same time the electrode associated therewith.

   If while lowering towards the molten mass, the electrode strikes the molten mass without establishing an arc and allows the cable 18 'to go loose, the switch 64' is open, and breaks the circuit to the coil 106, which allows the spring 40 'to control the injection pipe 26' and to rotate it in a direction causing the lifting of the electrode. As soon as the hydraulic motor begins to lift the electrode, the cable 18 'obviously becomes tensioned again, which closes the switch and allows the coil 106 of the voltage solenoid 105 to energize again. This again causes the electrode to be lowered so that the electrode is kept in suspension above the bath.

   If the voltage applied to the elec-

 Trodes fail for one reason or the other, or if the cable 18 'becomes loose, for example when the melt collapses, the solenoid 105 would be immediately de-energized and cause the electrode to lift.
