<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to powder boxes"
The present invention relates to cans for containing powdered materials, such as certain forms of insecticides. Certain forms of powder boxes are known by the name of "powders" or powder sprayers and the invention relates to a powder device of the type comprising ejection openings provided at one end of the box and a socket surrounding the sides. of the box, so as to be able to slide, thereon, the aforesaid bush having a closed end and being arranged to it in such a way that, when one is subjected to a reciprocating displacement axially with respect to the box, 'air is expelled through a valve associated with the end
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the box,
opposite to that provided with the ejection openings, so that the powder is ejected from the box through said ejection openings. Such a box will be designated herein by the expression "knotter of the type described".
In powderers of the type described hitherto used, the valve provided at the end of the box, opposite to that where the ejection openings are formed, generally comprises a valve element capable of being moved away from an opening. performed in the end of the box, thanks to the air expelled through the valve by the aforementioned sleeve.
The valve element is closed by a spring. Due to the nature of the valves employed in the known forms (the powders, it has been found necessary to isolate the valve elements from the powder contained in the powder, so that the powder is not normally in contact. with none of the valve elements This isolation is necessary in order to prevent plugging of the valves and hence malfunction of the powder sprayer.
The present invention relates to a powder device of the type described, the valve of which is of a construction such that the powder contained in the powder device can be in direct contact with said valve, the arrangement of the powder device being such that it only infiltrates. little or no powder between the elements of the valve and that the powder, which has infiltrated therein, does not affect the correct functioning of the powder device.
In a powder device thus designed, it is possible to use

According to the invention, a powder of the type described is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
characterized in that one end of the box carries a cover fixed to the sides of said box, this cover being provided with one or more air intake openings, a diaphragm being stretched across the intake openings air and being designed to allow the passage of air, while tending to prevent the passage of powder.
The diaphragm may be formed by a disc made of fine textile fabric, the marginal edges of which are glued to the inner surface of the cover, at a location between the inner periphery of the cover and the opening or openings for air intake provided. in said cover.
The diaphragm can also be constituted by a disc of impermeable material, perforated at places not located opposite the air intake opening (s) made in the cover, so as to provide passages for the air.
To allow a clear understanding of the invention, some embodiments will now be described, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic sectional view of a powder device according to the invention ; Figure 2 is a section taken on line II-II of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section similar to that of Figure 2, but showing a modification made to the arrangement shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a section through the valve end of an alternative powder box, and Figure 5 is a section taken along the line V-V in Figure 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In Figures 1 and 2, the powder device comprises a cylindrical body 1, at the outer end of which is attached a cover 2. This cover 2 is provided with openings 3, through which the powder 4 can be ejected, thanks to the displacement alternative of a socket 5, closed with a cover 6, the socket 5 being arranged to be able to slide freely on the body 1 of the powder powder.
The value of the powder is constituted by a cover in the form of a dish 7 made of tinplate or other suitable material, the cover 7 having a central air inlet opening 8 and being attached to the sides of the body 1, for example by being stamped there.
A diaphragm 9 is stretched across the opening 8 and is held in place by being firmly clamped between the cover 7 and the sides of the body 1 of the box. The diaphragm may be a disc of flexible normally impermeable material, such as paper or metallic foil, or of a material such as that sold under the trademark "Cellophane". The diaphragm can also be formed by a disc of fine textile fabric, in which case it is not necessary to perforate it, given that it is already so naturally.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the impermeable diaphragm 9 is perforated in several places 10, each of the perforations 10 being so arranged that when the disc is placed in the body of the box it is not in place. sight of the air intake opening 8 provided in the cover 7, so that the air cannot pass directly through the opening 8 and the perforated diaphragm 9, but is forced to follow a tortuous path .
The perforation of the diaphragm 9 is preferably carried out with the aid of a sharp instrument, which is pushed through the constituent material of the diaphragm in such a way that
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
openings are made there, the material, which is simply pushed out of its original plane, is not removed from the diaphragm, but remains attached to it by forming tongues 11, as shown schematically in FIG. 1.
When assembling the diaphragm, 9 with the cover 7 and the body of the box, the tabs 11 are arranged so as to be directed towards the ejection end of the box, so that when the box is filled with powder, this rests against the interior surface of the diaphragm and the tabs tend to return to the plane of the diaphragm, under the weight of the powder. Consequently, the powder will have little tendency to pass through the diaphragm and to come to be placed between the diaphragm and the cover, through which the diaphragm is stretched.
When the tabs 11 are arranged in the manner described above and the sleeve 5 is subjected to an axial reciprocating displacement, air is forced into the box and lifts the tabs 11 as it passes through the case. disc 9. As soon as the reciprocating movement of the sleeve 5 ceases, the tabs return to the plane of the diaphragm, under the weight of the powder.
It is clear that one can, if desired, perform the perforation of the diaphragm using small punches having the effect of completely separating certain parts of it, but it is obvious that, although this type of valve functions ne in the same way as that described above and does not become clogged by the powder coming between the diaphragm and its retaining cover, the form of valve with sharp perforations is not as advantageous as one in which the tabs are formed by drilling, as described above.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
but illustrates a cover 7, in which several openings 8 have been threatened, the perforations 10 being arranged so as not to be opposite the openings 8.
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate a modified form of valve, preferably consisting of a disc 12 of fine textile fabric, stretched across the air intake opening (s) 8, only one opening 8 being shown. , in Figures 4 and 5. The marginal parts of the disc 12 are glued to the inner face of the cover 7 using adhesive 13, the adhesive being anchored so that the diaphragm is attached to the cover 7, between the or the air intake openings 8 and the inner peripheral edge 14 of the cover.
If desired, the diaphragm 12 may consist of a disc of flexible normally impermeable material, as described above, this diaphragm then being provided with perforations such as those described above with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3.
It follows from the above that, in all cases, the diaphragm is stretched across the air intake.
If desired, a second perforated diaphragm (not shown), similar to that described above with reference to Figures 1 to 3, can be disposed above the first mentioned diaphragm. This second diaphragm is assembled to the box, together with the first mentioned diaphragm, so that the two diaphragms are stretched across the cover and are held in place, being clamped between the cover and the sides of the box. the box.
When provision is made for two diaphragms arranged one above the other, the perforations made therein are not facing each other. The addition of a second diaphragm, as described above, further reduces the tendency of the valve to clog due to small
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
quantities of powder passing through the perforations of the diaphragm.
It will be appreciated that if the above-mentioned bush 5 fits well around the can body 1, there is a considerable suction effect on the can valve when the bush is moved outward. higher than this, this suction being able to be sufficient to suck a little powder, through the diaphragm, into the box. To avoid or reduce this tendency, a valve may be provided at the closed end of the socket 5, this valve being constituted by a perforated cover 7 and by a perforated diaphragm designed as described above with reference to Figures 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawings.
