 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

    "METAL SEAL OF MINES".

   The present invention relates to a metal mining prop with a device making it possible to obtain a great tightening in the lock.

   We are witnessing the evolution of the metal prop from minnows to the tendency to give it a quality of the wooden prop, namely the ability to take heavy loads immediately.

  We are aiming for greater efficiency of the prop for better roof behavior.

   It is a well-known fact that the inner shaft is the weak point of all metal props. Up to now, we have not succeeded in giving the profile a shape which enables it to oppose to the considerable forces which stress it - load of the ground and clamping forces in the lock - a resistance such as the prop. does not undergo flexions.

   Often, the clamping forces of the lock deform the walls of the hollow profiles by bending stress so that they escape the clamping. The invention has for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 object to eliminate these disadvantages. For this purpose, according to the invention, profile shapes are proposed which transmit the clamping forces only by compression, to a large extent avoiding bending stress. In addition, the proposed profiles allow an advantageous distribution of the material; large moments of inertia are produced with little material, so that the prop in place remains below the buckling length.

   By avoiding the buckling stress in this way, only the compressive stress has to be taken into account, and this results in the double advantage of reduced weight and efficient use of material.

   Moreover, in all the embodiments, the friction surfaces are angled surfaces, this angle always being less than 180 but greater than 90. By this arrangement, one achieves the particular kind of friction, that of a wedge in a groove, which, as is known, allows a strong tightening for a weak pressure without, however, reaching the wedging. This angled arrangement also ensures good centering in the outer barrel, thereby eliminating the serious drawback of the oblique disposition of the interior barrel with respect to the outer barrel.

   The ability to take heavy loads directly - a quality of the wooden prop - can be conferred on the metal prop - thanks to the use of a special device which accompanies the inner barrel over a short distance. start of its sliding movement and causes the desired tightening in the lock. Two types of such devices have so far been developed. Both use for the drive a coupling with the inner barrel governed by the laws of friction.

   The proposed profiles lend themselves particularly advantageously to fulfilling this role, because the friction of a wedge in a groove favors the frictional resistance and it is moreover easy to give the friction surfaces large-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   different colors; small surfaces oppose, as we know, for the same pressure, a higher frictional resistance than large surfaces. It is also easy to apply to the various friction surfaces materials which do not have the same friction coefficients, such as soft iron, sintered iron, anti-friction alloys, etc.

   If one rolls in the profiles of the projections by a process analogous to the production of checkered sheets, a forced mechanical coupling is easily achieved between the inner barrel and the clamping device, which ensures absolute drive with the inner barrel. The coupling must, however, then be automatically removed after reaching the desired lock tightening and strut load take-up rate. For this purpose, special devices have been developed of the type employing a driven thin wedge and that consisting of a wedge mounted on a rocker. The invention is applied with equal success to both types of devices.

   Figures 1 to 9 show exemplary embodiments of the invention.

   Figure 1 shows in elevation a metal mine stanchion with a sectional view of the lock which has a driven thin wedge device. The inner barrel 1 is clamped in the lock 3 - which is on the outer barrel 2 - by a wedging device 4,5, 6 and 7. The particular clamping device 4 (driven thin wedge) is frictionally coupled with 1 and advances with 1 by a distance "H" in the cuniform pocket in the lock, which achieves the tight tightening of the lock and the strong load taking of the strut desired.

  When it has slid the distance H, 4 lands on the lock or the wedging device, and only the inner barrel 1 still exerts an action in the subsequent sliding. If the inner barrel has a constant section, the charge does not continue to increase; if, however, an increase of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the load socket, the inner barrel must be wedge-shaped.

   Numerals 5 represent low carbon, manganese and silicium mild steel friction linings. The bearing surface 9 of the clamping and / tightening wedge 7 in the lock is arcuate and the bearing surface 8, between 4 and 6, is also arcuate. These two arcs in the two planes guarantee the good span of all the surfaces in contact, so that pressure at the edge and poor support is avoided.

   Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1. It is clear that the thin wall of the hollow profile is not stressed by bending. The loaded areas "L" must not extend over the entire width of the webs of the profiles, the thin walls thus remaining protected from clamping forces in the lock. It appears, moreover, that the friction surfaces coupling 4 and 1 can be small and that the sliding surface 8, between 4 and 6, is a multiple of these friction surfaces; as a result, the friction between 1 and 4 is greater than between 4 and 6, because the pressure per unit area is greater between 1 and 4 than between 4 and 6; 1 can be made of rolled U-shaped profiles and welded to the webs to form the hollow profile.

   The inner barrel 1 can also be turned by 90 in the lock.

   Figure 3 simply shows another form of profile for the inner barrel; it is also a U-shaped rolled profile whose corners have been specially shaped to meet. the compressive stress of the clamping forces. The thin walls of the hollow profile are not stressed by clamping forces.

   The tightening is particularly advantageous here because it is exerted substantially over the entire periphery of the profile. 11 shows compression pieces one or both of which may be of the driven thin wedge type; corners 12 are in contact with the clamping and loosening corner 7 which, on the other hand, finds its support on the intermediate piece

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   13. 7 has, at 9, the arched shape and 13 has at 8, which also guarantees a good reach of all the bearing surfaces. In this case / 1 can be of constant section or wedge-shaped. The space in the angle- ,, 'may also be arched.

   Figure 4 shows that the same arrangements can also be applied to the single rolled double T profile 14. However, this profile has only a reduced buckling length and can therefore only be used for short props. .

   Figure 5 shows a hollow profile made up of two double-T rolled profiles. If the compression piece 17 is divided into three parts - as shown in dotted lines - the tensile forces in the M chords of the profile decrease to a corresponding extent. The wedge set 17 may be partially or totally of the driven thin wedge type. The profile shank 16 can also be of constant section or of wedge shape.

   Figure 6 shows a wedge arrangement on rocker serving as a special device for tensioning the lock.

  The rocker 18 takes the horizontal position when the compression piece or wedge 19 travels the distance "H" with 1; obtains, in this way, a strong tightening in the lock. 20 is a bearing of 18 and may be the tightening and loosening wedge if 18 is not wedge-shaped. Usually 18 is wedge shaped and is the tightening and loosening wedge.

   Figures 7 and 8 show an embodiment for 1, with grooves rolled into the barrel, 21 are the projections, the recesses form a socket for U-shaped stirrups, 22, serving as a support for the lifting devices 23 - such as threaded rods, wedges, eccentrics, etc ... used to give a forced extension to the prop against the roof, during its installation. The toothing 21 can also serve as a coupling device between 1 and 4 or 19 (FIG. 6). It can, for example, be used as support for an ankle engaged under the action of a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 spring automatically ceasing to act at the end of the stroke. The wedge 23 may also consist of two wedges of different angles, one of wide angle to be actuated to cut the stanchion to length and one of a small angle to be actuated to obtain the desired roof clamping.

   FIG. 9 shows a device for shifting the stanchion, making it possible to remove the latter while being sheltered in the remaining span; this device is a cable operated hammer, which can be operated at any distance. The hammer 24 is actuated by the cable 25. The outer barrel is advantageously provided with a device 26 intended to receive and support the hammer 24 to be strongly tightened on the / 27 /, by means of a wedge or other device of Tightening.
