 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  APPARATUS FOR THE HEAT TREATMENT OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF UREA AND AMMONIUM CARBAMATE WITH A VIEW TO DISSOCIATING THE LATTER.

   When making urea from ammonium carbamate, an aqueous solution is obtained which contains carbamate not converted to urea. To remove the carbamate from this solution, it is dissolved according to the reaction:
 EMI1.1
 by heating the solution to a temperature of about 90 C.

   When doing so, care must be taken that the urea is not at any point brought to a temperature higher than 120 C in order to avoid the formation of Muret according to the equation:
 EMI1.2
 the removal of the carbamate from the aqueous urea solution is generally carried out by means of a steam coil immersed in a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 solution or by lowering the solution on a steam coil provided with two sides of walls so as to form a channel, but it turned out that in the first case, the release of CO2 and NH3 is thwarted by the pressure of the bath whose height is necessarily quite substantial and the solution is not uniformly heated, while in the second case,

   the duration of travel of the solution on the coil is too short if the length of the coil and consequently the height of the apparatus are moderate or if the apparatus becomes excessive in size if sufficient travel time is ensured.

   On the other hand, the apparatus which is the subject of the present patent application and shown in the accompanying sketch is compact and ensures uniform heating of the solution as well as easy release of NH3 and CO2.

   It consists of a series of trays (1) on which the aqueous solution of urea and carbamate is circulated. The plates (1) have double bottoms (2) and (3) between which steam is injected. Since the heat transfer coefficient from the bottom (2) to the solution is about 100 times higher than the heat transfer coefficient from the bottom (3) to the gas, almost all of the heat given up by the vapor is usefully used.

   The funds (2) are provided with concentric walls (4) constituting channels (5) in which the solution circulates. - In this way, complete use of the entire heating surface is ensured, as well as a duration of presence of the solution uniform and sufficient to dissociate all of the arbamate and release the CO2 and NH3.

   In the channels (5), dams are installed which are suitable for causing the solution to swirl, ensuring good contact between the heating surfaces and easy release of CO2 and NH3.

  According to the attached sketch, some dams (6) force the solution to flow from the top, while others (7) force it to flow from the bottom.

   The aqueous solution of urea and carbamate is introduced into the apparatus through the tube (8) and descends from one plate to another at the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 by means of the overflow (9), while the gases resulting from the dissociation of the carbamate accompanied by water vapor are discharged from each tray by means of the tubes (10) and finally by the pipe (11).

   Steam is injected through the pipes (12), while the condensate is discharged through the pipes (13).
