 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 plés aux pièces de combinaison pour déplacer ces dernières et les amener à des positions correspondant à   laombinai-   son de la clé ou bien être séparés des pièces de combinai- son;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

1 ) d'assurer une introduction complète de la clé dans la serrure et le maintien de la clé dans cette posi- tion pendant le fonctionnement;
2 ) d'empêcher un retrait partiel accidentel de la clé hors de la serrure quand le barillet est dans la position neutre;
3 ) de pernettre de déterminer avec   précision   la position neutre et d'introduire et de retirer la clé dans cette posi- tion lorsque la combinaison doit être changée, l'enlèvement involontaire de la clé dans la position neutre étant empê- ché ;
4 )de ne permettre l'introduction et l'enlèvement de la clé que lorsque le barillet est dans une position prédé- terminée ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

La fig. 1 est une coupe verticale par l'axe de la serrure, celle-ci étant dans la position de fermeture;
La fig. 2 est une coupe par C-C de la fig. 4 montrant la serrure dans la position neutre;
La fig. 3 est une coupe par l'axe faite par un plan perpendiculaire au plan de coupe de la fig. 1;
La fig. 4 est une coupe transversale en regardant de l'arrière de la serrure, la coupe de la moitié de gauche étant faite à travers la tête mobile, tandis que la coupe de la moitié de droite est faite à travers le barillet et les poussoirs;
La fig. 5 est une coupe par A-A de la fig. 1;
La fig. 6 est une vue en élévation de face de la   eerru-   re, avec coupe partielle par les poussoirs;

La fig. 7 est une vue   schématique   de l'avant de la ser- rure montrant   comnent   est empêché l'enlèvement de la clé dans la position neutre;
La fig. 8 est une   @ue   semblable à   ce', le   de la fig. 7 montrant de quelle manière on peut enlever la clé après l'avoir fait tourner au delà de la position neutre ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 re montrant de quelle manière l'enlèvement de la clé réglable est possible dans la position neutre, tandis que la clé à pannetons fixes ne peut pas être retirée lorsqu'elle est dans cette position;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

The present invention relates to a cylinder lock with com @ inaisons which can be operated by means of a key consolidating either adjustable bits or permanently fixed bits.

   The type of cylinder lock to which the invention applies is the one comprising: a box; a barrel rotatable in said trunk; pushers movable axially in the barrel and which can be moved against the antagonistic action of the springs by means of the bits of a key which are inserted into the keyhole of the lock; finally, combination parts that can slide Lead into the trunk, the push-buttons being able to be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 folded to the combination pieces to move the latter and bring them to positions corresponding to the key combination or to be separated from the combination pieces;

   in such a lock, the pushers, after removal of the key, are moved by their springs and brought to positions in which the block of the combination members is held in the axial position to which said members have been brought by. protrusions or teeth which engage with and co-operate with protrusions or teeth carried by the barrel, so that relative rotation of the barrel with respect to the case is prevented, if such an attempt is made in using means other than the appropriate key.

   The invention is particularly, but not exclusively, applicable to a lock of the type described in French patent application / 1 515 * 521 filed by the applicant in which the push-buttons are U-shaped, their internal branches being able to slide in. an axial lock entry of the barrel, their external branches being able to slide in axial grooves threatened at the periphery of the barrel.

   Hitherto, in locks of the aforementioned type, the teeth: existing at the periphery of the barrel and on the combination members were V-shaped; in other words, they had sloping sides. This arrangement has the drawback that, if any radial play occurs, play due, for example, to unavoidable imprecision in manufacture, there results an axial play of corresponding value with the consequence that the combination members do not come. not meshed with the pushers or else they do not mesh with the teeth of the barrel.

   One of the objects of the present invention is to rule out

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 this drawback and to allow relatively easy adjustment between the teeth of the combination members and those of the barrel in the radial direction without influencing the axial position of the combination members.

   To this end, in accordance with the invention, teeth with a square or rectangular profile are formed on the barrel and on the combination members, in other words teeth whose sides or flanks which come into engagement with one another are perpendicular to the axis of the barrel instead of being inclined on said axis as before; it follows that the radial clearance between the teeth, which can occur as a result of a slight imprecision in the manufacture, does not affect the precision in the axial direction, which precision is important for the reason discussed below.

   In cylinder locks of the aforementioned type, the cylinder is rotated back and forth by a predetermined angle and there is a neutral position through which the cylinder passes between its two extreme positions.

  In the case where there are six pushers distributed in grooves around the periphery of the barrel and six combination members which normally come into engagement with the barrel between the pushers, the barrel is rotated by 60 and the neutral position is reached when the barrel has turned through an angle of 30, when the combination members are coupled to the push rods.

   If the key is removed from the keyhole while the barrel is in this neutral position, the pushers will be moved by their springs towards one end of the barrel and they will drive the combination members with them; Consequently, the combination for which the lock had been set will be destroyed, since all the push-buttons and combination members will be at one end of the cylinder.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   On the other hand, if it is deliberately desired to change the combination, it is necessary to remove the key from the keyhole while the cylinder is exactly in the neutral position, after which it is set again. the key and insert it into the keyhole while the cylinder is still in the neutral position. It is also necessary that the key be fully inserted into the keyhole to change the combination because, when the cylinder is in the neutral position, it is perfectly free to turn and it can be turned even if the key is not completely inserted, if this were the case, the lock would be set to the wrong combination.

   Accordingly, other objects of the invention are as follows:
1) ensure that the key is completely inserted into the lock and that the key is maintained in this position during operation;
2) prevent accidental partial removal of the key from the lock when the cylinder is in the neutral position;
3) to enable the neutral position to be determined with precision and to insert and remove the key in this position when the combination is to be changed, unintentional removal of the key in the neutral position being prevented;
4) to allow the key to be inserted and removed only when the cylinder is in a predetermined position;

5) finally to prevent the partial rotation of the cylinder during the introduction or removal of the key in the neutral position.

   For this purpose, in accordance with another characteristic

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 of the invention, the key and the lock case are provided with means which cooperate with each other in such a way that they prevent the rotation of the cylinder under the action of the key as long as the latter has not been completely introduced and, preferably also, that they prevent the accidental introduction or withdrawal of the key if the cylinder is not in a predetermined position. The means in question, which cooperate with each other, normally prevent the introduction and removal of the key when the cylinder is in the neutral position, but they can be adjusted to allow the inten- tion and removal of the key. - key holders in the neutral position.

   In addition, a cylinder lock of the aforementioned type can be actuated with a key comprising either an erot or fixed bits, or movable bits. In some cases it may be convenient, or suitable, to give one person an adjustable key and to give other authorized persons keys with fixed pins.

  However, in such a case, the owner of a fixed (i.e. non-adjustable) key could move the lock to the neutral position and change the combination, for example using a different fixed key. Consequently, in accordance with another characteristic of the invention, means have been provided by which it is possible to introduce and withdraw an adjustable key in the neutral position, a key with fixed lugs not being able to be withdrawn if the cylinder is in. the neutral position; under these conditions, if the combination needs to be changed, the re; lable key can be used.

   When the barrel is in the neutral position, it can, as we said above, turn freely in one direction or the other and this rotation is caused by engaging any tool or instrument in the input @ @ In accordance with to another characteristic of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 The invention provides means by which the rotation of the barrel is prevented, when it is in the neutral position, if the appropriate key has not been inserted into the keyhole.

   To better understand the invention and to facilitate its implementation, there is shown in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only and without any limiting nature of the scope of the invention, a cylinder lock constructed in accordance with to said invention.

Fig. 10, finally, is a cross section of the two keys shown on fig 9.

   As seen in this drawing, the lock comprises a box 1 organized to be fixed in the desired position and a cylinder 2 which is mounted so as to be able to turn: in the box 1. For this purpose, the right end ( in fig. 1) of the barrel 2 engages in a circular opening of the box 1, while the left end engages in an exterior cylindrical cap 3 whose internal surface comprises two opposite flats which come from meshed with corresponding flats provided on the end of the barrel, such that the cap 3 and the barrel 2 rotate as a single piece. The cap 3 is held in place by a ring 4 which bears against a flange 5 provided on the internal end of the cap and which is fixed by screws 24 to the box 1.

   A rectangular slot is made in the cap, a slot through which protrudes a transmission bar 6 which rotates with the cap and the barrel and which is connected to a bolt or other member (not shown) to be controlled by the lock.

   In the barrel 2 are fitted a certain number (six in the example shown) of U-shaped pushers 7 which can move in the axial direction of the barrel. At the external end of the lock, the pushers engage with a continuous peripheral wall 8 of the barrel 'and their internal branches 9 are guided in holes 10 made in the barrel parallel to the axis thereof, while that 'their external branches 11 can

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 slide in grooves 12 spaced around the periphery of the barrel. At their internal end, beyond the wall 8, the holes 10 have slits leaving free passages for the displacement of the U-shaped push-button bridges 7.

   At its outer end, the barrel has a keyhole 13 from which six slots 14 extend to the axial holes 10. The outer branches 11 of the pushers 7 are provided at each end with a projecting tab 15 and are housed in the grooves 12, of corresponding shape, of a size such that only the tabs 15 project beyond the periphery of the barrel 2. The pushers 7 are urged towards the outer end of the barrel by springs 16 which carry, by one end, against the U-shaped pushers and, by the opposite end, against the cap 3, which is provided with studs 17 which protrude inside the springs. The length of the pushers is such that, when they move inwards as far as possible, their free ends come into engagement with the peripheral wall 8.

   Between the grooves 12, the periphery of the barrel 2 is provided with a series of teeth 18 extending axially; in the example shown, there are six series of teeth. These teeth can engage with similar teeth 19 provided on the combination pieces 20 or be put out of engagement with said teeth; the combination members 20 can be engaged between the tabs 15 of the pushers and be released therefrom. The combination members 20 are T-shaped and can slide in axially extending T-section grooves 21 formed in the lock case 1.

   Teeth 18 and 19 are of square cross section, which provides the advantage that any radial clearance existing between the teeth does not affect the accuracy in the axial direction, which accuracy.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 is important for the correct functioning of the lock.

   The pushers can be moved against the antagonistic action of their springs 16 by introducing into the keyhole 13 a key 22 provided, on each side, with projecting bits or pins 23 which penetrate into the slots 14 and which engage with the outer ends of the pushrods 7.

   The lock, as described heretofore, is of known construction, except that in previously known locks the teeth made on the barrel and on the combination pieces are V-shaped, which gives instead of the previously mentioned drawback, a drawback eliminated by the square teeth.

  In order to allow a better understanding of the other characteristics of the invention, the operation of the lock as it has been described heretofore will now be described.

   Assuming that the lock is in the locking position shown in fig. 1, position in which the pushers 7 are at the outer end of the barrel 2, the combination pieces having been moved and their teeth 19 being in engagement with the teeth 18 of the barrel, so that the barrel cannot rotate , with the tabs 15 of the pushers acting on the combination parts, a key 22 is introduced into the keyhole 13, the bit 23 of which have been set to the combination used to close the lock. As a result, each pusher 7 is moved by a distance corresponding to the movement of the combination part which cooperates with it.

   The key is then turned to turn the barrel through an angle of 60, thanks to which the combination pieces 7 are released from

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 one of the series of teeth 18 of the barrel, pass between the projecting tabs 15 of the pushers, then are released from the latter and engaged with the next series of teeth 18 of the barrel. During the rotation of the barrel, the transmission member 6 receives a rotational movement causing the operation of the lock.

   The key is then withdrawn from the keyhole, which causes the pushers to be returned by their springs towards the outer end of the barrel, the combination pieces being kept in their displaced position; It follows that the rotation of the barrel is again rendered impossible by the fact that the tabs 15 engage with the combination pieces, unless the rotation has been obtained by means of a key having its bits set to the correct combination and fully inserted into the keyhole.

   It will be noted that, during the rotation of the barrel by an angle of 60 in one direction or the other, there is a neutral position, at the moment when the barrel has turned by an angle of 30, in which the combination pieces are released from the teeth of the barrel and are engaged between the tabs 15 of the pushers. However, if the key were inadvertently inserted or if one removed inadvertently when the cylinder is in this position, the pushers would be displaced by their springs towards one end of the cylinder and would carry with them the combination parts with this result that the combination on which the lock had been set would be destroyed.

   In addition, to change the combination, the key must be completely withdrawn when the barrel occupies exactly the neutral position and the combination pieces 20 are placed between the tabs 15 of the pushers, their teeth 19 being released from the teeth 16 of the barrel. After the key has been set to the desired combination, it must be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 push fully into the keyhole while the cylinder is still in the neutral position because, in this position, the cylinder can be rotated even if the key is not fully inserted and, if this was done, the lock would be set to the wrong combination.

   The lock is therefore provided with the following devices making it possible to obtain the results indicated above.

   To this end, the barrel 2 comprises, in the vicinity of its external end, a peripheral groove or groove 30 in which the internal edges of four sector plates 31, 32, 33 and 34 engage. The sector plates 31 and 33 are pierced with holes, 35 and 36 respectively, in which lugs 37 and 38 projecting from the internal face of the box 1 engage, said lugs thus fixing these two parts in their position.

   The sector pieces 32 and 34 extend to the vicinity of the peripheral parts of the cylinder, between the sectors 31 and 33, but not entirely around said parts, and are normally held resiliently, by devices described above. afterwards, in the position shown in figures 5 and 9, a position in which a radial edge of the sector 32 engages the adjacent radial edge of the sector 31, the opposite radial edge being spaced, with a clearance 39, from the adjacent radial edge of sector 33, u: radial edge of sector 34 engaging the adjacent radial edge of sector 33 and the opposing radial edge being separated, with clearance 40, from the adjacent radial edge of sector 31.

   The diameter of the circle formed by the internal peripheral edges of the sectors is somewhat less than the length of the keyhole and the width of the key and, to allow the key to be inserted in this keyhole, we has provided on the inner edges of sectors 31 and 33 slots 41 and 42, respectively, so that at this point the keyhole is open over its entire length.

   Key 22 behaves

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 te side tents 43 arranged in such a way that, after the key has been completely inserted into the keyhole, until its shoulder 67 bears against the face of the lock and it is rotated then, the slots engage on the inner edges of the sector pieces, which means that the key must be fully inserted before it can be turned to turn the cylinder.

   The side slots of the key 22 are not visible in figs. 1 and 2, but they are similar to the slots 43 of the keys 52 and 53 shown in FIG. 9.

  As a result, it is impossible to remove the key when it is rotated to the neutral position, i.e. when it is rotated by anle of 30 and it is in alignment. radial edges in contact with sectors 31, 32 and 33, 34, because the sectors are engaged in the slots of the key.

   The sectors 32 and 34 may, however, be anenés from the position illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 9 in the position illustrated in FIG. 4 in which the games 39 and 40 are closed, while games 44 located in the neutral position have been opened. For this purpose, the box 1 has been provided with a head 46 which can rotate by a limited amount on the outer end of the box 1. The head 46 is in the form of a ring with two internal projections 60 diametrically opposed and arranged. between axial recesses @ led in the outer periphery of the box 1.

  The peripheral width of the protrusions 60 is less than that of the recesses 61, so that the head 46 can receive a new rotation of limited amplitude. Each of the protrusions 60 has an axially extending slot terminating at its outer end in a radially disposed groove and one of the legs of an or-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 L-shaped gane 47 is fitted in the slot, its other branch, both fitted in the radial groove and extending through a slot 49, in the trunk 1. The protruding inner ends of the parts 47 respectively engage in recesses of the outer periphery of the sectors
32 and 34. On the outer end of the box 1, in the vicinity of the head or ring 46, is also fitted a ring
62.

   This ring comprises, at diametrically opposed points, protrusions 63 directed inwardly, the protrusions of which the radial width is substantially equal to that of the axial recesses 61, thanks to which the ring 62 cannot be completely relative to the box 1. The head 46 and the ring 62 are held in place by a split ring 64 which engages in a peripheral groove of the case 1. The head 46 has two arcuate recesses 65 in each of which is disposed a spring 48. One of the ends of each spring bears against one of the ends of the recess and the opposite end bears against an ear 63 which protrudes on the ring 62 in the recess.

   When the head 46 is rotated relative to the ring 62, the secteus 3 and 34 are brought from the position shown in FIGS. 5 and 9 to that shown in fig. 4 in which the clearances 39 and 40 are closed, while the clearances 44, which are exactly in the neutral position, are open, so that the neutral position is determined with precision and that one can remove the key when it is in this position if you want to change the combination of the lock.

   Usually, to close and open the lock, the key has to turn through an angle of 60 and then be returned to its original position so that it can be pulled out of the keyhole. However in some cases, for example if the cylinder lock is combined with a bolt lock

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 dormant, it may be necessary to remove the key when it is in the position at 60 to which it has been rotated and, for this purpose, the two movable sections 32 and 34 have, respectively, additional slots 50 and 51 which allow the key to be removed when it is turned through an angle of 60, as indicated in fig. 8.

   The lock can be operated with a key
22, the bit 23 of which can either be fixed or be adjustable. In some cases it may be a good idea to give one person an adjustable key and to give other authorized persons keys with fixed bit bits. However, in such a case, the owner of a fixed key could move the lock to the neutral position and change the combination, for example by using a different fixed key.

   To prevent disturbance of the lock in this way, the key 52 with fixed bit 54 is given a width greater than that of the key 53 with resettable bit 55, the two keys having slots 43 in which the keys engage. sectors 31, 32, 33 and 34 but the slots of the fixed key are deeper than those of the adjustable key, as seen in fig. 9. Each of the sectors 31, 32 has a notched portion 56 and 57, respectively, in its internal periphery, the depth of the notch being such that the diametrical distance AB (fig. 9) is equal to the width. CD of the key Adjustable and less than the width EF of the fixed key which is substantially equal to the diametrical distance MN between the internal edges of the slots 41,42 of sectors 31 and 33.

   The peripheral width G-H of the notched parts is substantially equal to half the width X-L of the slots 41,42, that is to say half of the thick-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 sister of one or the other of the keys. Under these conditions, when the sectors 32, 34 are moved by the distance 0-P (fig.

   9) equal to half the thickness of one or the other of the keys, the adjustable key 53, if it has been inserted, can be withdrawn, but the fixed key, if it has been inserted in the entrance -'e lock, cannot be removed because its slots 43 are still partially in engagement with the peripheral edges of the notched portions 56 and 57, since the diametrical distance between these edges is less than the width of the fixed key and that the width of the forged opening is only half the thickness of said key, as is clear from the examination of FIG. 7.

   To prevent the cylinder from turning when it is in the neutral position if the suitable key has not been fully inserted into the keyhole, 15 tabs have been provided on the outer ends. of the inner arms of the pushers the slots in which the pins 37 engage when the key is completely withdrawn and the pushers are moved by their springs towards the outer end of the cylinder, the lock being in the neutral position, which that the rotation of the barrel is prevented.

   In order to turn the cylinder, it is then necessary to engage the key in the keyhole, thanks to which the push-pieces are released and released from the protrusions, which allows the cylinder to turn. in the keyhole, the key must be set to the desired combination which can, if desired, be the zero combination in which all the bits of the key are pulled out to the maximum. In this case, when the key is inserted, the pushers are only moved by a sufficient amount so that they are released from the projections of the trunk.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

   In any case, if there are six pushers and six combination members, one can use a million different combinations and not 999,999 different combinations.

   Have. if it can be understood, the distance at which the key must be inserted into the keyhole is determined with precision thanks to the sectors which engage in the slots of the key; Consequently, any axial play between the teeth of the barrel and those of the combination members must be avoided. This result is obtained, as explained above, by giving the teeth a square or rectangular profile.
