<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to combustion di s-positives and its aim is to obtain an effective mixing of the gases obtained by the combustion reactions which take place in these devices.
It relates, more particularly, but not exclusively, to devices of this type in which the combustion is maintained by a current of air, the speed and massive flow of which are such as the air, necessary for the maintenance of the combustion. , must be introduced in stages to avoid the flame going out.
This amounts to protecting the flame by a screen against the direct blast of the air current and to introducing the air following several successive stages in order to provide, in reality, a primary combustion zone and one or more combustion zones

In this regard, it should be noted that the invention is particularly applicable to cases where special problems arise when it is necessary to maintain the combustion by means of a current of air circulating at a speed. high and with a massive flow, as for example in a gas turbine and / or propulsion installations /, the expression "at high speed" signifying that the average speed in the combustion zone,
calculated as the ratio of the volume per unit time to the cross section of the path followed by the current, is substantially greater than the rate of propagation of the flame in the fuel-air mixture in question. For hydrocarbons burning in air, the flame propagation speed is considered to be of the order of 30 cm per second at atmospheric pressure.
The invention is, on the other hand, very particularly suitable for combustion apparatuses for gas turbines and / or reaction thrusters for which the speed of the air current, sharpening the general direction of flow in a gas turbine. combustion zone and calculated as above, can be as low as about 3m. and as high as 90m. and more per second, depending on the constitution of the device.
The object of the invention is, above all, to obtain an effective mixing of the combustion products by a uniform distribution of the temperature at the outlet of the combustion device.
To this end, the invention relates to a combustion device comprising several flame tubes which each delimit a region which forms, in substance, an autonomous combustion zone in that almost all of the air , necessary for combustion in this region, is introduced therein, each tube opening into a common mixing chamber.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The intention is that no combustion will occur in the mixing chamber ;, and, in the event that some amount of air is allowed to enter it, this will take place under controlled conditions, plus Especially for cooling reasons, this air participating in no way or very little in the main reactions of combustion.
According to a preferred embodiment, the flame tubes are made so that they are similar by arranging them in an annular series around a common axis, each chamber delimiting a region which forms, in substance, a autonomous combustion zone in that almost all of the air necessary for combustion is introduced into it, each tube opening into a common mixing chamber, coaxial with the series of flame tubes and which can also be annular.
The combustion device, which is the object of the invention, can advantageously be cooled by placing the air, which must be introduced into a combustion chamber, in a particular axial region in contact with the external face of the chamber, downstream of this region, and this air is then forced to flow upstream, in contact with the wall of the chamber, before being able to enter the chamber in the desired region.
The combustion device can, also or in addition, be cooled by any of the methods indicated in provisional patent no.376,561 filed August 7, 1948 under the same name and under the title: "Improvements in methods and devices for cooling - say conduits for gases at high temperature "and in which it is proposed to restrict the increase in the temperature of the wall of a conduit in which a very hot gas circulates by establishing between the current @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of hot gas and the internal face of the duct, over a long path in the direction of the flow of the current therein, a layer of colder air which is stable in the sense that it does not present, essentially,
no turbulence and that its mixing with the hot gases is completely or mainly due to diffusion or to the difference in velocities, rather than to the creation of an eddy or to the penetrating power of the air currents. According to one of these methods, cooling air is introduced into a duct through which hot combustion gases flow in the form of a stream which envelops the stream of hot gases while moving in the same direction and at a speed which is equal or comparable to that which exists in the outermost zone of the gas stream, the arrangement being such as an air envelope, which has just been introduced,
or kept between the hot gases and the wall of the duct on a significant downstream path (relative to the direction of flow in the duct) from the point where the air enters the duct.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example and in axial section, a combustion device established according to the invention.
The device, as shown, is particularly suitable for a power plant with a gas turbine and comprises several flame tubes 1, distributed symmetrically along a circumference around a common axis, and a tubular mixing chamber 3, co - Axial to the aforementioned assembly and in which all the tubes deliver their combustion gases. Each tube 1 is supplied with fuel by an injector 4 and with air, necessary for complete combustion, in a primary zone 5 and in subsequent combustion zones provided in this tube. The mixing chamber
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
3 receives the gases -only through the outlets 6 of the flame tubes 1. Being used for a gas turbine, the chamber 3 delivers into a diffuser (not shown) which opens into the inlet of the turbine.
The diameter of the chamber 3 is approximately equal to that of the tubular series of the flame tubes 1 and its length is normally on the order of that of these tubes.
The mixing chamber is surrounded by a coaxial envelope 7 with an air inlet 8, near its downstream end (relative to the direction of flow in the chamber 3, through which air is admitted for s 'flow along the arrows upstream (with respect to the same direction) through the annular space 9 existing between the chamber 3 and the casing 7. Each flame tube 1 comprises an annular screen 10 and the air is conducted in the annular space 11 formed between the screen 10 and the tube 2 towards the upstream end of the tube and in this region the air flow is reversed by 180, as indicated by the arrows, to then flow in the reverse direction (with respect to the direction of flow in mixing chamber 3 and flame tube 1) through the upstream end of each tube 1.
Each screen 10 is surrounded by an envelope 12 by which an annular air duct, closed and insulated, is formed around the screen.
10.
When applying the cooling method indicated in the aforementioned prior patent, each flame tube 1 has a cap 13 surrounding the primary combustion zone 5, into which fuel is injected by a burner to initiate combustion.
The tube 1 has a larger diameter than the cap 13 in order to form an annular air inlet around it 14 The dimensions of the members being those indicated in this prior patent so that during operation the speed of l 'air cooler through inlet 14
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and that of the hot gases leaving the primary combustion zone 5 corresponding sufficiently so that they can flow, in the form of separate streams, a substantial distance downstream in the tube 1 so that over this distance it can flow. there is a relatively cool air envelope along the wall of this tube.
The cap 5 is the usual stabilizing screen used in such cases and has suitable air inlets 15 to support the primary combustion. The correspondence between the flow rates of hot gas and the cooling air can be obtained easily for a given operating condition by suitably proportioning the cap 5 and the downstream part of the tube 1. The correspondence of the air flows does not remain. however, only for a wide range of operating conditions and will therefore be based on those which occurred at the maximum operating temperature due to the disappearance of the cooling air layer at lower temperatures; is acceptable in most cases.
The cap or screen 5 has the shape of a bell, the opening 13a of which faces downstream and it comprises, upstream, a tubular spoon 16 of frustoconical or similar shape and whose dimensions are such, with respect to the tube 1 and to the upstream orifice 16a, that the desired relationship is obtained between the flow rates through and around the spoon 16.
The mixing chamber 3 may be tubular or annular and may include suitable baffles or tubes 17 to mechanically cause turbulence.
In some cases, however, the internal turbulence, resulting from the expansion of gas streams exiting from tube 1 into chamber 3, is in itself sufficient to produce the desired mixture.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
One realizes that the use of determined air currents is to be avoided because these would destroy the desired uniformity of the temperature which one wants to obtain by the intervention of the chamber 3. This does not exclude not, however, admitting a certain quantity of air into chamber 3 in a controlled manner to cool the wall or other parts of this chamber.
For example, a little air, which flows upstream, through the annular space 9, can enter the chamber 3 by passing directly through side openings 18, formed in the wall of the chamber for forcing. - sea a relatively cold peripheral coating therein. It is also possible to pass a current of air, following a continuous path and downstream, through an annular envelope, established around the chamber 3 and, if desired, also around some or all of the tubes of flame 1 and part or all of this air can be admitted into chamber 3 through side inlets formed in its wall to form the desired coating of cold air.
CLAIMS, ---------------- 1.- A combustion device comprising several flame tubes which each delimit a region which forms, in substance, an autonomous combustion zone in this respect. that almost all of the air necessary for combustion in this region is introduced into it, each tube opening into a common mixing chamber.
