<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Stapling device usable in particular for closing cardboard packaging.
The present invention relates generally to stapling devices, and more particularly, although not exclusively, to devices which can be used in particular for closing cardboard packaging.
One of the aims of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this type allowing the assembly of several sheets of cardboard, paper or similar material using staples without having to exert an often undesirable pressure on it. a support consisting, for example, of any packaging. This pressure exerted on the repackaging itself is in fact a major drawback of most staplers in existence today.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stapling apparatus in which the force causing the penetration of the staples into the sheets to be assembled is independent of the operator actuating the apparatus, and is, on the contrary, determined by mechanical means. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Yet another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this type in which the sheets to be assembled are, during stapling, clamped against each other so as to obtain stapling without any play between. these leaves.
The invention is therefore embodied in a stapling device, usable in particular for closing cardboard packaging, comprising a sole provided with a crimping plate and a part pivotably mounted relative to this sole, and bearing a slide for receiving staples, members for feeding these staples into the position of use, a knife for controlling the penetration of the first clip into the sheets to be assembled and a control member for this knife, and characterized in that that a device is provided for automatically controlling the relative displacement of the end of the sole carrying the crimping plate and of the part carrying the knife in order to ensure the clamping of the sheets to be stapled,
the part of the apparatus carrying the control member being provided with a handle allowing the maintenance of this apparatus during its operation, and consequently the stapling of these sheets without exerting any harmful pressure on the packaging.
According to particular features of this apparatus, a telescopic member is interposed between the sole and the movable part relative to the latter, towards the end of the apparatus opposite the knife, in order to control the clamping of the sheets during the stapling, and an operating cable connects one of the elements of this telescopic member to the control member of the apparatus.
According to other features of the invention, the knife is associated with a spring working in compression and carries a spout normally engaged with a pawl actuated by the control member of the apparatus, this spring providing the knife with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
substantially constant kinetic energy for stapling when this nose escapes this pawl at a certain point in the stroke of the latter, at the time of the stapling command.
The following description, given with reference to the appended drawings given by way of non-limiting example, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of this device.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus shown comprises a sole 1 provided towards its thinnest end with a crimping plate 2 having on its upper face grooves 3 for guiding the staples, in the ha- ritual. This sole carries towards its rear part a bump 4 allowing, by means of pins 5, the relative angular displacement of the flanges 6 integral with a slideway 7 serving to receive the staple control 8. .
The latter is housed in the longitudinal cavity of the slide 7 and is subjected to the action of a pusher 9 itself biased by a helical spring 10 surrounding a rod 11, the rear end of which is integral with a button. knurled 12 fixed removably on the slide 7 by a bayonet fitting 13.
A telescopic member is interposed between the rear ends of the sole 1 and of the slide 7, this member comprising an external cylindrical element 14 provided with an ear forming a clamp 15 and an internal sleeve 16 associated with one another by a lug 17 and a helical slot 18, the upper face of this telescopic member being convex as shown at 19 to rest on the lower face of the slide
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
As shown in fig. 1, a body 20 extended towards the rear by a handle 21 is attached to the side walls of the slide 7. An axis 22 carrying a control lever 23 and a pulley 24 is journaled in bearings 25 of the body 20.
A cable 26 is fixed by one end on the pulley 24 and by its other end in the clamp 15, this cable being surrounded by a protective sheath 27 on the part adjacent to the handle 21. A return spring 28 is interposed between the one of the flanges 6 and the clamp 15 and surrounds the cable 26.
The control lever 23 is curved at the height of the axis 22 to form an arm 23 'which is normally in a substantially horizontal position. This arm 23 'is articulated at its end with a link 29 itself articulated with a lever 30 journalling on an axis 31. The assembly comprising the lever arm 23', the link 29 and the lever 30 forms the three sides of 'an articulated parallelogram and carries a tilting pawl 32 mounted at the point of articulation between the rod 29 and the lever 30.
The pawl 32 subjected to the action of a spiral spring (not shown) is normally engaged, as shown in FIG. 2, with a nose 33 integral with a knife 34 associated with a helical spring 35 working in compression and bearing upwards against a stop 36. An end transverse plate 37 limits the movement of the strip of staples during the Upward erasing of knife 34 as will be described below.
The operation of the device which has just been described is as follows:
To perform the stapling of cardboard sheets 38 to be assembled, the sole 1 of the device is introduced under these sheets, the length of this sole allowing, as will be noted, to proceed with the stapling at a relatively point.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
away from the point of introduction of this sole. The crimping plate 2 then comes to be placed under the part of the sheets 38 which will be crossed by the clip. The operator holds the device in his hand, the fingers having passed under the handle 21, and the thumb as well as the corresponding part of the palm resting on the control lever 25. It will be noted that, in this position, the operator will hold the device with his fingers during the maneuver, which will prevent any harmful pressure on the packaging.
When the operator presses on the control lever 23, the latter will pivot with the axis 22, driving the pulley 24 and consequently by exerting a traction on the cable 26. The latter will then act on the element. rotary 14 of the telescopic member, which will exert by the curved part 19 a pressure directed upwards on the underside of the slide 7, which will result in the clamping of the cardboard sheets 2 staple 38.
At the same time, the pivoting of the lever 23 will cause the movement of the tilting pawl 32 along an arc of a circle having the axis 31 as its center, and consequently the compression of the helical spring 35 and the lifting of the knife 34 by the action of this pawl 32 on the beak 33. The knife 34 will therefore move upwards and allow the movement of the staple strip 8 forwards under the action of the spring 10. The first staple of this strip will thus come to be placed under the knife 34 and rest against the end plate 37.
When the displacement following an arc of a circle of the pawl 32 will be sufficient, it will escape from the spout 33, and the knife will be thrown downwards We the action of the spring 35 compresses with a substantially constant kinetic force This knife will then detach a staple of the strip 8 and make it penetrate into the., sheets 38, the points of this staple being folded under these sheets in the usual manner.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
When the operator releases the lever 23, the spring 28 will return the cable 26 to its original position, causing the lever 23 to be returned upwards, and the pawl 32 will return to the position shown under the control of its spiral spring (no represented). The appliance will then be ready to operate again.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, it is possible to make modifications to the embodiment which has just been described.
