Description

"A method of obtaining a 'bubbling bed' of solid particles in a stream of a gaseous medium".
It is known that the reaction between gases and finely divided materials can be carried out while the particles of solid matter are held by the stream of
gas in continuous turbulence above a fixed grid, so that one obtains what is called a "boiling bed" (in English: boiling bed).
The advantages due to this "bubbling bed" are in particular to allow an increase in the concentration of the particles of sclid material or of dust in the gas stream, a good contact between the particles and the gas.
gas due to the vigorous turbulent currents, the evacuation of particles as in the form of a liquid, etc.
On the other hand, the use of a "bubbling bed" makes sense
reveals disadvantageous in that, if to perform
reactions at high temperatures, for example above 1000 [deg.] C, special care must be taken
the construction of the grid. This disadvantage arises, for example, when this system is applied to the gasification of fine-grained carbonaceous materials, such as coal fines, fine coke, etc., while it is
At the same time, the wear of the grid must be taken into account.
It has been found that the aforementioned disadvantages can be avoided in obtaining a "bubbling bed" of solid particles in a circulating gaseous medium by passing the gaseous medium with the solid particles through a layer of gas. filling body at
a speed of the gas, between these filling bodies, greater than the falling speed of the particles and, above the filling bodies, smaller than this falling speed of the solid particles.
In the process according to the invention, a "bubbling bed" of the particles forms above the filling bodies.

In the accompanying drawing, the process according to the invention

placed a layer of filler 3, across
<EMI ID = 3.1>
solid cells introduced at 4. A "bubbling bed" 2 forms above the filler body layer, while gas continues to flow at 5.
The process according to the invention can be applied to all kinds of reactions between gases and
solid bodies, in particular gas purification by solid bodies, as well as catalytic reactions
in the vapor phase, where a finely divided solid material is employed as a "fluid catalyst". For the reactions which are carried out at high temperature, the process according to the invention is advantageous, because the disadvantages of the methods employed hitherto, in particular construction difficulties and the wear of the screens employed are avoided and it is possible operate in a simple manner with refractory filling bodies. For the gasification of fine-grained fuels, a coke layer can be advantageously employed, which at the same time exerts a favorable influence on the course of the reaction.
In addition, the contact between solid particles and
be
the gaseous medium can / further increased by combining the process according to the invention with the process described in the Belgian patent application filed on December 29, 1948

ple, making the filler body layer large enough that the second method can also be carried out.
