<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Valve operated pneumatic hammer."
The present invention relates to a valve actuated pneumatic hammer in which a large diameter plate valve is controlled, during the impact stroke, by the pressure drop and, during the stroke. return, by the compression produced by the piston, in combination with the pressure drop produced on the opposite face. In controls of this well-known type, the rear end of the cylinder is provided with a two-part control box having valve seats between which the plate valve is located. These constructions have the disadvantage resulting from the fact that the manufacture is expensive and that it results in a considerable lengthening of the hammer.
In addition, the conditions of in- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
version of such plate valves do not meet the requirements of practice and this is due, in the first place, to the fact that the passage sections, in particular for the percussion stroke, as well as the control surface acting during the compressive forces are relatively small, and this even in constructions in which the diameter per se of the plate valve is large, i.e. corresponds to the cylinder bore.
To say that the control surface which acts during the compression force is small is to say that the inversion force is weak, so that the control process only takes place with a low acceleration if l 'care is taken, by the position of the exhaust port, that there is already a high compression in the front compartment of the cylinder, when the pressure drops on the opposite surface of the plate valve, this which obviously leads to a decrease in the number of shots.
In accordance with the invention, the drawbacks of current plate valves are reduced by providing a valve plate having a diameter slightly greater than the bore of the cylinder between, on the one hand, the handle and, on the other hand, the face. rear of the cylinder or a shoulder thereof, such that the control surface which comes into action during the compression force has a diameter at least equal to the bore of the cylinder. In this case, the seats of the valve plate are provided directly on the cylinder and on the body of the handle, the separate seats being omitted.
In this way, the elongation required to date for the hammer is almost completely eliminated and a hammer is produced whose length corresponds practically to that of hammers controlled by a cylindrical slide. For the compression effect, there is a control surface corresponding at least to that of the striker piston, so that, already with a low compression, there is a control force having a value such that the plate s 'suddenly reverses, when the pressure drops that occurs

on the other side, when the exhaust port is unmasked.
This means simultaneously provides the advantage of damping the recoil, which generally makes the auxiliary valve plates subjected to the action of springs (or similar devices) superfluous, used to date to damp the recoil.
The construction according to the invention offers the advantage of making it possible to give the valve plate a stroke greater than that which has hitherto been possible, so that in combination with the large effective diameter of the plate - valve, larger passage sections are obtained for the compressed air and, consequently, an increase in efficiency.
Another improvement is achieved by connecting, via a transverse channel, a median air chamber (provided in the handle, behind the valve plate, and communicating alternately with the fresh air intake and with the atmosphere) to an annular groove coaxial with the bore of the cylinder, a groove into which open two or more return channels formed in the wall of the cylinder. The annular groove thus provided for supplying the return channels provides this advantage that there is no need to worry about the position in which the supply pipe is located, after screwing in the handle.
It is obvious that the valve seats can undergo special suitable surface treatment in order to avoid undue wear. It is also possible to provide separate interchangeable valve seats iei.
One embodiment is given by way of non-limiting example and shown in the accompanying drawing.
The fig.l is an axial section of the hammer.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, from the side of the handle, showing the arrangement of the channels.
Fig.3 is a plan view of the rear end of the hammer body.
The handle 3 is screwed, by threads 2, on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
hammer body 1. In the handle are the fresh air intake pipe 4 and the compressed air intake valve 5, which can be actuated by means of the pusher 6 by means of a trigger.
In the cylinder slides the firing pin 7 which, in the position shown in the drawing, is almost at the end of the percussion stroke and which consequently already unmasks the exhaust ports 8. The command is produced by the valve plate 9 whose diameter is slightly larger than the cylinder bore. One of the valve seats is formed by a shoulder 10 on the rear face of the cylinder while the other seat 11 is provided on the body of the handle.
In the position shown in the drawing, the compressed air arriving through channels 12 and 13 enters the rear compartment of the cylinder. The face of the valve plate turned towards the cylinder cavity is here subjected to the pressure prevailing in the cylinder. On the other face of the valve plate, only the outer annular surface 14 is subjected to the pressure of the compressed working fluid. When the exhaust port 8 is unmasked, the pressure drops in the rear compartment of the cylinder, whereby the pressure drop which manifests itself on the surface 14 brings the valve to the other position and thus cuts off the supply of gas. compressed air in the rear cylinder compartment.
The compressed air then enters, through channels 20, into an axial chamber or cavity 15 and from there, through the transverse channel 16, into the annular groove 17 of the body of the handle, into which the return channels open. 18, so that the front compartment 19 of the cylinder is supplied with compressed air and the piston is moved back. During this time, the rear cylinder compartment is purged of air through the exhaust ports 8 'and 8. After sealing the exhaust ports 8 through the rear edge of the piston, the air is compressed in the rear cylinder compartment and the chainring
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
valve 9 is subjected to the action of compression.
During the continuation of the retrograde movement of the piston, the front edge of the piston unmasks the exhaust port 8 'which establishes communication, through the channels 18 and the front compartment of the cylinder, between the cavity behind the plate. valve and atmosphere. This results in a pressure drop across the rear face of the valve plate 9, so that the aforementioned compression abruptly brings said valve plate to the position shown in fig.l.
The general means of the invention is applicable in particular to pneumatic hammers used in the exploitation of quarries, but it is also applicable to other pneumatic hammers.
