<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Les avantages de l'invention seront d'abord démontrés par les calculs ci-après, où : To ou Po est la température ou la pression de l'air extérieur;

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

"Jet engine"
The invention relates to a jet engine comprising, as is known per se, at least one compressor and more than one turbine, with provision, between the turbine and the compressor controlled by the latter, of at least one. combustion chamber, in which the air is burnt mixed with the air compressed by the compressor.
Known types of such jet engines include a compressor and a turbine controlling the same. The turbine absorbs, from the gases leaving the combustion chamber, only the energy required to control the compressor. The jet of gas which escapes from the jet engine is then rich in kinetic energy and thermal energy.
In addition, it has already been proposed to apply a second turbine,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
for example a second turbine wheel rotating freely around the shaft of the first turbine wheel. This second impeller absorbs an additional amount of energy from the gas flow, but here too the gas jet leaving the expansion nozzle is still very rich in energy. In the case considered, the second turbine is used to control a second compressor, which gives the air a certain preliminary pressure before it enters the main compressor. In this case, the two compressors are in series. In addition, the second turbine can control a propeller mounted in series.
The present invention relates to a gas engine of the type described and is based on the opinion that the power of such an engine can be increased to a considerable extent.
It is true that several ways have already been tried to achieve better power; however, this is only possible by acting on a limited number of factors.
The theoretical air efficiency can be improved if the ratio T1 is reduced, therefore by choosing, for the compressor,
T2 a lower air inlet temperature or a higher air outlet temperature.
Because T1 is smaller at high altitudes, the energy supplied by jet engines at these altitudes is higher than at low altitudes.
T2 cannot be increased infinitely by increasing the air compression. In practice, the increase in compression is subject to particular limits, since this increase requires more work and, for higher compression ratios, larger and larger compressors must be used. heavier, whose own energy is lower.
In practice, the compression ratio is then generally 4: 1.
Apart from the aforementioned (air) factor, the energy is still
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
influenced by losses through exhaust, radiation, cooling, friction and combustion. Energy can be increased only by limiting losses, exhaust.
A number of factors which reduce the energy of the jet engine cannot be influenced, for practical reasons.
Thus, for example, the energy of the compressor, the energy of the turbine and the energy at the mouths of the jet are given by the construction of these organs. and. in practice, the choice of these will aim to adopt those which provide the highest energy.
From there, it would be possible to further increase the temperature of the air before, that is to say upstream of the turbine. This also has the effect of increasing the air flow through the machine (mass flow). However, the temperature to which the turbine can be subjected cannot reach too high a value having regard to the properties of the material. In addition, if the temperature in the turbine is increased, the exhaust jet becomes even faster, which leads to a reduction in flight efficiency.
According to the invention, the additional turbines control one or more compressors producing one or more secondary gas jets, which influence the primary gas jet of the engine to such an extent that the speed of the jet produced by the additional turbine is at least equal or preferably greater than that of the primary gas jet which escapes at the same time.
As will emerge from what follows, this considerably improves the efficiency.
When the invention is applied to a jet engine for propelling airplanes, the second turbine controls e.g. a second compressor, or a certain number of additional turbines control additional compressors. In this case, they are not intercalated, in the normal circuit
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the engine, but in parallel with it.
The second compressor or additional compressors have or are added one or more auxiliary expansion nozzles. The second compressor should be built around the first so that the auxiliary expansion nozzle surrounds the main nozzle. The second compressor can just as easily be built into the first compressor. The expansion nozzles do not necessarily have to be separated by a bulkhead. In the latter case, the layers of air rub against each other.
The additional compressor (s) provide or themselves provide suitable propulsion, however provision is preferably made so that the jet leaving the main expansion nozzle is as much as possible energy-free.
Such coupling of compressors, which preferably rotate in opposite directions, offers the advantage that no external coupling occurs. This also applies to turbines, as is known per se.
Although it emerges from the foregoing that more than one additional turbine can be used, as well as more than one additional compressor, only one additional turbine and one additional compressor will be discussed below. additional compressor, for reasons of simplicity.
The advantages of the invention will first be demonstrated by the calculations below, where: To or Po is the temperature or the pressure of the outside air;

When calculating the energy of an ordinary reaction engine (Whittle), which therefore does not include the arrangements according to the present invention, it is obviously not necessary to take into account the auxiliary compressor, the auxiliary turbine and the auxiliary nozzle, which are not part of it.
We will assume: a flight speed of 250 m / sec. (900 Km / h.) = V A = mechanical equivalent of heat = 427 Kg.

When, according to the invention, an auxiliary compressor connected in parallel is applied in a separate circuit, the jet speeds, mass flow rate and efficiency can be calculated in a similar manner. In this case, it will first be assumed that no heat exchange is applied in the expansion nozzle, so that what was assumed in the first calculations also applies here.
It is now necessary to make calculations for both compressors. The following relation is valid for the first

With a normal jet engine, calculated as above, the flight efficiency, calculated in an identical manner is:
EMI11.3
In summary, it follows from these calculations that, all conditions being equal: A) the speed of the jet in the expansion nozzle in the case of a normal jet engine is 738 m / sec.
B) the speed of the jet in the main expansion nozzle in the case of an engine according to the invention, without exchange, ... thermal, is 407 m / sec.
C) the speed of the jet in the auxiliary expansion nozzle with an engine according to the invention, but without heat exchange, is 453 m / sec.
D) with heat exchange, the speed along B becomes 330 m / sec.

E) te u "" n n "C" 508 m / sec.
The mass flow rate is: In the case A 48.8 kg.
"" "B C 73.0" "" "D E 81.0"
The flight efficiency is: In the case of A 19% "" "B C. 28.4%" "" D E 31.5%.
It clearly follows from the above calculations that, when applying the present invention, the jet speed, as well as the
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
mass flow rate and efficiency can be changed considerably. p By adjusting the P4 / P ratio, that is to say the pressure stage PO after the turbines, the power of the turbine can be determined in advance. By adjusting P4, that is to say the pressure after the turbines, the temperature stage in the turbine is determined, while determining the value of the factor a, that is to say the quantity of air flowing through the second circuit. The value a (T7- T1) can be selected beforehand, ie the temperature rise in the second compressor.
Two cases have been considered above, namely, with and without heat exchange. It is known per se to absorb heat from the jet of the main expansion nozzle, for example using a pipe fan which, under the action of a turbine impeller, directs cold air along the expansion nozzle. This cold air is subjected to very little or no pressure. It has also been proposed to apply a heat exchange where the heat absorbed from the expansion nozzle serves to heat air which is then introduced into the circuit after the compressor.
This principle known per se can also be applied in an engine according to the invention, although it is advantageous to accelerate the gases in the auxiliary expansion nozzle by supplying heat from the main nozzle to the auxiliary nozzle.
A motor according to the invention has the advantage of being perfectly adjustable.
The jet in the auxiliary nozzle can be regulated by adjusting the compression in the second compressor in various ways.
In this case, a certain quantity of energy may remain in the main nozzle, which is advantageous during flights at certain altitudes. This allows the speed to be adjusted. As T4 depends on P4, and T7 on P7, and these two values determine the expansion of the jet in the main nozzle and the auxiliary nozzle, we can choose, for each flight speed, the most favorable speed
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
gas jet. Therefore, a jet engine according to the invention can be advantageously applied in slower airplanes.
It follows that when an airplane equipped with the engine according to the invention flies at high altitudes (T is reduced) the efficiency and the mass flow rate are considerably improved.
In the above calculations, the various losses that occur in practice have not been considered (for the sake of comparison, moreover). It has been assumed that, in practice, the engine according to the invention comprises members such as turbines and compressors, each of which has an own efficiency which is as high as possible.
For a more precise calculation, it should be taken into account that as the airplane reaches a higher altitude, the number K changes, while the specific heat is not the same in all cases.
It can be shown by calculations that a heat exchanger is advantageous when
EMI13.1
Instead of using a single additional turbine, several can be provided. For example, a second additional turbine can control a second additional compressor, which, if necessary, can operate as an advanced compressor upstream of the main nozzle compressor, as well as upstream of the auxiliary nozzle compressor. As indicated above, the use of a prior compressor is already known per se. In the present case, the latter can be fitted both before the compressor of the main nozzle and before the compressor of the auxiliary nozzle, taking into account the number a.
With a pre-compressor, the pressure rises, while the fuel inlet decreases, as T2 increases * In this case, the efficiency and mass flow increase in spurts. In the engine according to the invention, the increased power is @
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
partially captured by the so-called auxiliary turbine-compressor group and is transmitted, and converted into the product a (T7-T1).
If required, the auxiliary nozzle compressor can function partly as a pre-compressor for the main compressor.
In practice, the air intake to the compressor of the main nozzle will be made adjustable in order to modify the number a. When a separable mechanical connection is provided between the so-called auxiliary compressor and its control turbine, the auxiliary compressor can be disengaged and its operation interrupted, so that the main expansion nozzle operates alone. This connection can, for example, be executed in such a way that, when the auxiliary compressor is stuck, the control turbine wheel disengages.
If necessary, the engine can be provided with means such that, in the event of failure of the main compressor, the auxiliary compressor sends compressed air into the combustion chamber. In this case, the main nozzle operates alone, of course with reduced efficiency.
In the foregoing, it has been assumed that the compression and expansion exhibit an adiabatic shape. The efficiency can be improved by cooling the air before it enters the compressor and simultaneously increasing T2, that is to say the temperature of the air admitted into the combustion chamber. For example, T2 can be increased if the heat contained in the coolant is transmitted to the air passing through the main compressor.
Instead of driving one or more auxiliary compressors for a parallel circuit, the additional turbine can control another component, for example an overhead propeller. With the motor according to the invention, P5 / P can be chosen at will, for example
Po just somewhat greater than 1. In this case, the speed of the gas jet in the main nozzle is reduced.
If, instead of the auxiliary compressor, an overhead propeller is coupled to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
control thereof and that a prior compressor is applied if necessary before the main compressor, in the manner described above, the following case can be obtained: P5 being chosen can T4-T5 is large, it is that is, the auxiliary turbine can then capture the energy released by the greater drop in temperature and convert it into energy supplied to the propeller.
Due to the reduction in speed, there will be a decrease in propulsive force; however, thanks to the prior compressor, P3 can be given the most suitable value. In
In addition, the operation of the auxiliary compressor for the auxiliary nozzle can be combined with an overhead propeller, so that different variations are possible.
When an overhead propeller is used, a construction such that the propeller can be disengaged and the auxiliary compressors engaged is preferably chosen. It goes without saying that the use of the propeller will be superfluous, once a certain altitude and / or a certain speed has been reached.
The above considerations apply equally well to the case where the jet engine is used as a stationary engine. The auxiliary turbine then controls for example a dynamo or a flywheel. In this case, there is no propulsive force, so that the operation of the pre-compressor can be enhanced.
