<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
1, on
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Lantern-spring assembly for suspension of bicycles, motorcycles and vehicles in general.
The present invention relates to a lantern-spring assembly for bicycles, motorcycles and vehicles in general provided with elastic suspension of the type in which the spring of the suspension is housed on the upper part of the small movable fork of the fork. elastic.
The present invention relates to a fanal-spring assembly in which the suspension spring is housed in the housing of the lantern.
The invention has several advantages from the points of view of aesthetics, size and finally, technique. In fact the spring is completely hidden from view. However, particularly when a spring is used
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rubber (which, from a technical point of view, has remarkable advantages over springs of other types), since the spring normally has rather large dimensions and a shape which is not very aesthetic, the inclusion of the spring in the lantern not only eliminates considerable bulk but also remarkably improves the elegance of the suspension.
In addition, as will appear more clearly from the following description, with reference to the appended drawing, the lantern housing constitutes an excellent support for the spring; moreover, it can be used with a view to a very opportune precompression of the spring itself, thus making unnecessary the use of other mechanical elements expressly employed for this purpose.
Finally, the spring is completely fitted, because the housing of the lantern is completely closed and therefore the spring is protected from the infiltration of harmful substances, such as lubricating oil, dust, etc., and from atmospheric agents, in particularly light, the deleterious effect of which is well known.
Fig. 1 shows, partially in longitudinal vertical section, an exemplary embodiment according to the invention, applied to the elastic suspension, by rubber spring, of the front fork of a bicycle; fig. 2 shows a longitudinal vertical section along the plane 2-2 of FIG. 3, the lantern housing; fig. 3 shows this housing of the lantern in cross section, along the plane 3-3 of FIG. 2; fig. 4 shows a diametral section of the chalice support to be applied to the lower part of the housing; and finally fig. 5 shows in plan the support itself.
Referring particularly to fig. 1, we

designated by 1 the spring, which in the case of the example is in substance of the rubber type claimed in Belgian patent N 484 782 filed on 9/11/1948.
More exactly, this spring is constituted by two springs 1a and a of the aforesaid type, superimposed so as to work in series, each elementary spring being constituted by the elastic element 2, respectively 2 'in the form of a bell or cup and by the end metal frames and 4, respectively 3 'and 4', one of the two springs is reversed with respect to the other, and the facing frames 4 4 'are joined integrally together by means of a metal ring. The other frames 2 3 'are respectively connected to the ceiling of the housing 6 of the lantern 7 and to the upper end of the mobile fork 8:
to this end, the end 2 of the frame is threaded so as to be screwed into the corresponding thread of the end of the small mobile fork.
On the convex part of the elastic element of the springs the a act, during the deformation of the springs, the profiled plates 10 10 ', the profile of which can be varied in order to better adapt the deformability of the elastic suspension to the requirements of the 'employment.
The spring is completely fitted into the housing 6 of the lantern; this constitutes the main object of the present invention. By 11 is denoted the lamp holder of the lantern, by 12 the reflector holder, and by 13 the glass refractor, these parts of the lantern being of the type commonly used in flags of known normal construction.
By 14 is designated a rubber buffer, which serves as a bumper in the return stroke of the rubber spring; in the case of the figure this buffer is housed in the concave part of the plate 10 'and rests on the other side on the support 15 which, in turn, is screwed, thanks to the thread 16 of its bolt 17. on the upper end of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
support 18 for the small mobile fork, this support being rigidly fixed to the fixed fork of the vehicle (not shown in the drawings).
The support 15, more clearly illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, is at its upper part, fixed to the lower mouth 19 of the lantern by means of screws 20 introduced into the bores 21 of the support itself and 22 of said mouth 19.
The upper frame 2 of the spring is provided with a tail such as shown by 23 in FIG. 1, and the latter is forcibly engaged in the socket 24 integral with the housing 6 of the lantern. At the location of this socket 24, the ceiling of the lantern can be reinforced by a plate 25.
The spring 1 preferably has at rest a height which is greater than the distance between the ceiling of the lantern and the upper end 8 of the small mobile fork when the assembly is mounted as indicated in FIG. 1, so that in order to be fitted, the spring must be subjected to precompression. In fig. 1 precisely shows the spring mounted under a slight precompression. This precompression can be determined according to the requirements of the job, and is intended to prevent, as a result of the oscillations caused by the roughness of the road, the elastic member is stressed under tension during the return stroke. The precompression is maintained and ensured by the reciprocal position of the support 15 and of the housing 6 of the lantern, which is obtained by means of the screws 20, as mentioned above.
The assembly consisting of the support 15, the housing 6 of the lantern and the front parts thereof, forms a completely closed box which perfectly protects the entire spring.
Of course, the detailed description above, of a particular type of spring and the corresponding assembly according to a preferred embodiment of the subject of the invention is given only by way of non-limiting example. For example
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the spring may be of another type, either in rubber or in a different material; for example it could be a metallic coil spring.
Or instead of applying it to the elastic fork of a bicycle, the lantern-spring assembly can be applied to motorcycles, motor bicycles and in general to any vehicle provided with a fork.
In addition, the details of the arrangement of the spring in the lantern, or of the attachment of the assembly to the elastic fork, or some other part of the assembly, may also be varied, without departing from the scope of this present invention. invention.
