On

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   Fig. 1 est une vue complète.

  Method and apparatus for printing textile fabrics.

   The present invention relates to a process for printing textile fabrics of all fibers and of all kinds, which constitutes a considerable improvement over the commercial and industrial processes used hitherto, in that it allows the reproduction of miniatures, prints. colorful images taken directly from nature, technicolor photograms, wood engravings and art reproductions of fresco or oil paintings.

     The invention enables these exquisite designs to be reproduced on fabrics using the latest photomechanical reproduction processes, such as color photography, direct photography, three or four color photoengraving, photolitho-

 graphics, etching on copper, zinc or steel for intaglio printing, using as mechanical printing means a lithographic, letterpress printing machine of the direct or offset type, or a printing machine hollow.

   According to the invention, the design is applied to a support consisting of a sheet of paper or of another suitable material, by one of the usual letterpress, lithographic or intaglio printing processes.

   Before receiving the design, the paper is subjected to a special treatment, which will be described below and which is of essential importance. The colors used must meet special conditions, which will be specified below, to allow the colored design to be removed from the support in order to transfer it to the fabric. When the fabric has received the colored material, it is subjected to a spraying, developing, fixing or finishing treatment, as the case may be.

   To be able to serve as a base sheet for the tracing design, the paper should be made from a soft, half-size resinous pulp weighing 60-70 gr / m2 and aged on suitable easels, then coated on only one side of an unsolvable glue, which is prepared known follows:
The following substances are boiled in the proportions indicated:
600 gr wheat starch
400 gr water
20 gr formaldehyde
5 gr acetic acid which force a thick paste which can be easily applied to the paper using a standard sizing machine.

   The paper is dried and then receives another coating of a fat which is prepared by boiling the

1 kg of linseed oil is boiled at 300 and mixed with 1 kg 500 of a good quality turpentine (burgundy); the mixture is allowed to stand for 24 hours, then stirred to completely dissolve the contents until a viscous liquid is obtained. 10 g of borax are added which are dissolved in it, then 1/4 liter of distilled water is added to enulsify. The liquid, which becomes whitish, will be called n 1.

   Then, a mixture of the following substances is boiled in a kettle in the proportions indicated: 200 g of rosin, 20 g of zinc stearate, 10 g of paraffin. The substances dissolve under the action of heat. After stopping the heating, 50 g of turpentine are added. This mixture, which solidifies without hardening on cooling, will be called n 2.

   Three parts of n 2 and two parts of n 1 are mixed and dissolved and placed in a closed container, the contents of which will be called n 3.

   The following substances are mixed together: 500 g of potato starch dextrin and 400 g of water, which are heated without boiling them. The cooled mixture is a mixture of 20 g of glycerin and 5 g of acetic acid. This thickener will be called n 4.

   Part of the thickener No. 4 is taken and stirred by incorporating therein a quantity of coloring dobby, sufficient to obtain the desired shade, then the mixture is heated again without boiling it. We thus obtain a basic product which will be called n 5. We then prepare a printing ink from:
4 parts of n 3
2 parts of n 5.

   To obtain perfect homogeneity, the mixture is processed in a kneader and then in a refiner. We

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 thus obtains an excellent printing ink which can be used to apply the design to the base sheet of paper.

   For intaglio printing, it is preferable to use mineral dyes which are subjected to the same treatment and mixed with 20% of a conglomerate consisting of 20 g of zinc stearate, 10 g of paraffin and 5 g of uastic with molten and diluted rubber, and from 5 to 10 gr of refined petroleum.

   The paper is then printed using mechanical means known in this technique. Once you have obtained a polychrome print on the paper, the design can be transferred from the paper to the fabric at any time.

   The sheets of paper are reported and assembled, and are secured to a strong paper strip by mechanically mouldering them together with the strip along one of their edges, said strip carrying the designs into their positions. relative values along the desired distance.

   The tape bearing the designs is wound so as to form a coil.

   The decal on the fabric is carried out using a calender having three superimposed rollers; the diameter of the central roller is smaller than that of the other two, moreover, the central roller is provided with electric or other heating means.

   The other two rolls are lined with paper wool and are wider than the central roll with the bare metal surface.

   Before reaching the grille, the fabric goes through a humidification mechanism. For this purpose, the calender can be equipped with a device comprising two superimposed rollers covered with a soft or absorbent fabric. The lower roll

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 quenching in a basin from which it receives moisture intended to be transmitted to the fabric passing between the two rollers at the speed required to absorb the moisture.

   The moistened fabric is automatically transferred to the upper calender roll which leads it between the middle and lower calender rolls together with the web carrying the base paper sheets, which has been prepared beforehand on a table. The center roll is heated, wedged as discussed above, to heat the fabric as it is pressed by the calender.

   The tape carrying the base paper sheets and the fabric coming out of the calender are wound up separately. The fabric fully absorbs the color transferred from the paper, and the spent tape can be used for other operations, note when it is in a washable dobby, such as rubber, cellulose etc., instead of paper.

   The printed fabric is subjected to other treatments, such as steaming on the Mather-Platt machine, fixing and washing in hot water, and final treatment in an autoclave using solvent vapors, such as trielin, benzene or other equivalent materials for the elimination of fatty substances, then it is finished.

   The drawing shows schematically the apparatus for printing fabrics according to the invention.

   Fig. 1 is a complete view.

   Fig. 2 is a detail view showing how the base sheets of paper are attached to the tape.

   1 designates a roll on which the strip 2 of strong paper is wound. The strip 2 carries the printed sheets 3 which are attached to it one behind the other in the direction of movement by a stapling at 4, cora :: e shown in FIG. 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   5 denotes the roll receiving the fabric intended to be printed by transfer printing.

   6 denotes the central roll of the calender, which is placed between an upper roll 8 and a lower roll 7.

  The roller 6., the diameter of which is smaller than that of the other two rollers, is entirely made of metal and is appropriately heated. The other two rolls 7 and 3 are lined with paper wool. The fabric 9 intended to be printed first passes through a humidifier apparatus preferably comprising two superimposed rollers 10 and 11 lined with a soft or permeable fabric, the lower roll 11 soaking in a basin 12 supplying the humidifying water. The moistened fabric 9 passes over the upper roll 8 of the calender by which it is led between the central and lower rolls 6 and 7 respectively.

   As a result, the strip 2 of strong paper carrying the base sheets 3 unwinds from the roll 1 and passes between the rolls 6 and 7 so that the designs 3 are facing the fabric.

   Under the action of the heat from the roller 6 and the pressure between the rollers 6 and 7, the printing is traced from the sheets 3 to the fabric 9.

   The web 2 and the printed fabric 9 are wound on the rollers 13 and 14 respectively.

   The fabric feed speed can be 2 to 3 meters per minute. The temperature of the central roller 6 is about 1200 and the pressure between the rollers 6 and 7 varies, depending on the articles to be printed, within wide limits and can reach a value of up to a few tons.

   The fabric printed in any fibers (silk, cotton, artificial silk, ordinary fibers etc.) is placed in a closed container or a vaporizing chamber, in which it is subjected during the creameries for 15 minutes to a jet @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 of saturated steam at a pressure of about one and a half atmospheres. During this time, the physico-mechanical properties of the coloring materials will produce the development of the printed subject by enhancing the vividness of the colors.

   Then any fabric other than pure silk is treated for about 35 to 40 minutes with a jet of dry steam at a pressure of about 2 atmospheres.

   At this point, the print is permanently fixed, and the fabric coming out of the chamber has a soft, full feel.
