 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  "Foot measuring device".

   This invention relates to an improved foot measuring apparatus primarily intended for use by retailers of mass produced footwear sold in all sizes and "fit".

   The main object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus of the kind specified above, which can be used

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 quick and easy to determine the fundamental measurements of the foot, which will be sufficient for the retailer to decide on the shoe size and fit required for the shoe, i.e. the total length of the foot and the circumferential dimension or the circumference of the foot. foot at its widest part, and also, as desired, the measurement of the heel to the metatarsal eminence of the foot. Foot length is generally expressed by a number well known to the public as the "size" of the shoe, and this "size" can be directly indicated on a scale mounted on the apparatus.

   The term "fit" is generally used to denote the desired width of the shoe, and, to ensure correct fit of the shoe, a range of widths, four different widths for example, is generally provided for each "size".

  The effective width of the foot is determined by devices of the same model as that specified above, by measuring the circumference of the foot at its widest part, namely: a line inclined with respect to the longitudinal plane in which the the foot, this inclined line being able to be regarded as passing by the metatarsal articulations of the big toe and the small toe.

   A practical embodiment of a foot measure constructed in accordance with the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGS. 1 and 2 are respectively front and rear perspective views of the foot measuring device or foot measure.

   Fig. 3 is a plan view of the complete apparatus.

   Fig. 4 is an elevation in longitudinal section, along the line IV-IV of FIG. 3, and fig. 5 is a cross section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 3, drawn on a larger scale.

   When using the foot measure shown in Figures 1 to 5, the foot of the person being tried on is supported longitudinally

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 on a flat bar 1, mounted longitudinally in the manner of a bridge on a base 2, having the shape of an elongated frame, so as to embrace the opening 3 of the frame, the relative widths of the bar 1 and the The opening 3 of the frame being designed so as to leave slits 4 on the opposite longitudinal sides of the bar 1. At one end of the bar 1 there is a fixed stop plate 5, which comes in. contact and supports the rear of the heel, while a second stop 6 is mounted in order to be able to perform a sliding movement on the upper face of the bar 1.

  The stopper 6 is arranged to be slid along the bar 1, until it comes into contact with the longest toe and is retained on the bar 1, using a cross piece 7, which passes under the bar 1, and is engaged by its longitudinal arm in a groove 8, formed in the underside of the bar 1. The cross piece 7 is fixed by its transverse arm, using screws 9, to tabs 10, which protrude from stop 6 on the opposite longitudinal sides of bar 1. The toe stop 6 is wedge-shaped in longitudinal section and the thin edge of the wedge is intended to directly indicate the shoe size. the shoe necessary for the length of the foot measured between stops 5 and 6, on a graduated plate 11, placed in a shallow recess 12, made in the upper face of the support bar 1 for the foot.

   The numbers indicating the size of the shoe are given in the first column of the graduated plate 11, and, the four remaining columns give, opposite each number indicating the size, a series of numbers corresponding to those of the ribbon. measuring the width of the foot, as will be discussed later. The marks corresponding to those at the head of the columns on the graduated plate 11, can be transferred to the inclined front face of the wedge-shaped stop 6 for the toe, in order to facilitate the reading of the plate 11, when the stop 6 for toe is moved on this one
Between the fixed stop 5 for the heel and the adjustable sliding stop 6 for the toe, there is provided a block 13, comprising a pair

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 side flanges 14, and a lowered central part 15.

   The block 13 is slidably supported by its lateral edges 14, along the marginal portions of the base 2, which flank the slots 4. The bottom of the central part of the block 13, is arranged under the bar 1, and the thickness side flanges 14 of block 13, is such that their upper faces do not protrude on the upper face of the bar 1, on which the foot is supported. The cheeks or side walls 16 of the lowered central part 15 of the block 13 are chamfered as indicated, so that the block 13 is free to pivot under the bar 1, so that a measuring tape 17 can be placed in the diagonal or the inclined position. appropriate, in order to surround the foot at its widest part, that is, on the line passing through the metatarsal joints of the big and small toes.

  The tape 17 is threaded into the slots 4 above the bottom of the central part 15 of the block 13, and extends outward and upwards, on the opposite sides of the bar 1, by aligned recesses 18 , which open on the cheeks or side walls 16. One end of the tape 17 is provided with a loop 19, in which the other end of the tape can be threaded, in order to lightly attach the foot to the bar. 1. The outer face of the tape 17 carries a series of numbers, and the number on the free end of the tape 17 which appears in the opening of the loop 19, is looked up in one of the four columns, opposite the number of the size, indicated by the thin front edge of the toe stop 6 in the first column of the graduated plate 11.

   The reference at the head of the colon, where the number of the tape you are looking for is located, indicates the necessary "fit". If, for example, the toe stop 6 indicates that a shoe size "8" is required for the measured foot, then the tape 17 indicates the number "28", which should be found in the third column of the graduated plate 11, on the same line as the number of the size "8" indicated, the reference letter, for example "A", at the head of this third column, denotes the "fit" required for the shoe. Plate 11 is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 fitted removably in the recess 12 provided on the bar 1, thus being able to be interchangeable with other similar plates giving the sizes and the fit of standard shoes for men, women and children.

   The side edges 14 of the block 13 are provided with chamfered edges 20 which are intended, when the block 13 is inclined to one side or the other, depending on whether it is the right foot or the left foot which is measured, to indicate a mark on either of the similar side scales 21, mounted in shallow recesses 22, provided in the upper face of the base 2. This mark gives an indication of the measurement from heel to heel. metatarsal eminence of the foot and is also taken into account when choosing the standard fit that meets the customer's needs.
