  " AGENT FLUORESCENT DE LA SERIE DU STILBENE "

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 EMI4.4
 On obtient par   l'analyse $,50   % S et 3,80 % N au lieu des proportions calculées de 8,60 % S et 3,76 % N.

   EXEMPLE 3.- On recommence l'opération de l'exem- ple 1, sauf qu'on remplace l'acide pipéronylique par 64 gr. d'acide 2,5-diméthoxybenzoique. Le produit obtenu, qui est
 EMI4.5
 l'acide . .' bis ( 2" 5 ".-diméthoxybenzamido ) stilbène2 2 i

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 disulfonique, est représenté par la formule suivante :
 EMI5.1
   EXEMPLE 4.-   On recommence l'opération de l'exem- ple 1, sauf qu'on remplace l'acide pipéronylique par 67 gr. d'acide   25-diéthoxybenzo'ique.

   EXEMPLE 5.- On recommence l'opération de ltexem- ple 1, sauf qu'on remplace l'acide pipéronylique par 86 gr.
 EMI5.2
 d'acide 2,1-dibutoxybenzoique.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 EMI6.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  "FLUORESCENT AGENT OF THE STILBENE SERIES"

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to novel stilbene derivatives which possess valuable fluorescent properties.

   Certain acylated aminostilbene sulfonic and carboxylic acids have been used relatively widely as optical brighteners, particularly cellulosics. These acylated stilbene sulfonic and carboxylic acids, incorporated in cellulosic materials such as paper, fabric, metal sheets, etc., have the property of making them fluorescent, that is to say they absorb ultra light. -violet and emit visible light. Some of these acylated stilbene derivatives fluoresce blue in color and therefore tend to neutralize any yellow tint of cellulosic materials and thereby make them appear whiter.

   Among the compounds which have been recommended as agents for making them shiny, mention may be made of certain products obtained by acylation of 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acids with benzoyl halides. These known fluorescent benzamidostilbene disulfonic acids have a blue or sometimes reddish-purple fluorescence.

     However, the Applicant has discovered a category of new stilbene derivatives whose fluorescence is white or greenish-white, when exposed to ultra-violet light and which thus exert a much more intense optical whitening action and the materials in question appear whiter or brighter.

   The new stilbene derivatives which have the property of emitting a fluorescence of white color or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 greenish-white, when exposed to ultraviolet light, are those which can be obtained by condensing a lower alkyl ether of a dioxybenzoyl halide with
 EMI3.1
 t-diaminostilbene-2'21-disulfonic acid or an analogous aminostilbene compound.

   These new 4,4'-bis-benzaminostilbene acids can be represented by the following general formula:
 EMI3.2
 wherein Z represents an acidic radical (i.e. -SO H or -COOH) and X and Y represent lower alkoxy groups (i.e. methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy and butoxy) or X and Y together can represent the group -ORO- in which R represents a methylene or ethylene group.

   The invention is readily understood from the following examples of novel stilbene compounds which are the subject of it and a process for their preparation.

   EXAMPLE 1. 70 grams (0.59 mol) of thionyl chloride (SOCL2) at 58 g are added to a flask. (0.35 mol) of piperonylic acid (3,4-methylene-dioxybenzoic acid). The mixture is stirred overnight at a temperature of 40 to 50 ° C. The reaction mass is heated for three hours at 65 ° C., then the excess thionyl chloride is distilled off at a temperature of. 95 C for about two hours.

   31.4 gr. (0085 mol) of 4,4'-dia-minostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid are dissolved in water by means of a quantity of sodium hydrate sufficient to neutralize the acid groups. sulfonic ... We add 60 gr. of sodium acetate and quickly add the prepared acid chloride

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 as was said at a temperature of 20 to 25 C. After stirring for half an hour to an hour, the precipitated product is filtered off and dried.

   After having recrystallized it twice from water, it is observed by analysis that it contains 8.90% S and 3.93% N, proportions which agree with the respective calculated proportions of 8.99% S and 3.93 N for the compound represented by the following formula and which is 4,4'-bis- (3 ", 4" - methylenedioxybenzamido) stilbene -2,2'-disulfonic acid.
 EMI4.1
 By replacing the piperonylic acid from the previous example with 3,4-ethylenedioxybenzoic acid, the acid is obtained.
 EMI4.2
 1r, 4'-bis (3 "r" -ethylenedioxybenzamido) stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic.

   EXAMPLE 2 The operation is carried out again as in Example 1, except that the piperonylic acid is replaced by 64 g. of resorcylic acid dimethyl ether. The compound thus obtained

 held, which is 1 + ,. 1-.bis (2rr. "¯dimethoxybenzamido) stilbene-22'¯disulfonic is represented by the following formula:
 EMI4.4
 By analysis, $ 50% S and 3.80% N are obtained instead of the calculated proportions of 8.60% S and 3.76% N.

   EXAMPLE 3 The operation of Example 1 is repeated, except that the piperonylic acid is replaced by 64 gr. 2,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid. The product obtained, which is

 disulfonic, is represented by the following formula:
 EMI5.1
   EXAMPLE 4 The operation of Example 1 is repeated, except that the piperonylic acid is replaced by 67 gr. 25-diethoxybenzoic acid.

   EXAMPLE 5 The operation of Example 1 is repeated, except that the piperonylic acid is replaced by 86 gr.
 EMI5.2
 2,1-dibutoxybenzoic acid.

   It is therefore evident that the new fluorescent compounds according to the invention can be obtained by replacing the methyl ethers of the preceding examples by the ethyl, propyl and butyl ethers of the dioxybenzoyl halides employed in these examples, as well as by the methyl ethers. methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl ethers of other dioxybenzoyl halides such as lower alkyl ethers of gamma-resorcylic acid (3,5-dioxybenzoic acid), protoca-

 tech (3t.-dioxybenzoic acid) and 2,3-dioxybenzoic acid and condensing them with 4,4'-diamino- acid
 EMI5.4
 stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic to obtain the corresponding benz-midostiloenee 2,2'-disulfonic acids.

   As an example of the alkyl ethers of the dioxybenzoyl halides which can be used, in addition to those indicated in the preceding examples, to obtain the new acids substituted accordingly, 4,4'-benzamidostilbene-2,2'-di - sulfonates, mention may be made of 3,5-dimethoxybenzoyl, 2,3-dimethoxybenzoyl, 3,4-dimethoxybenzoyl, 3,5-diethoxybenzoyl, 3,4-diethoxybenzoyl, 3,4-diethoxybenzoyl,
 EMI5.5
 2,3'-methylene-dioxybenzoyl, etc.

   Although in the preceding examples, the stilbene compound to be acylated is the acid 4,4'-diami-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 EMI6.1
 nostilbene2i2-disulfonic acid, since this compound can be obtained commercially, it should be understood that if desired one can choose other 4,4'-diaminostilbene sulfonic acids such as acid 4, 4'-
 EMI6.2
 diaminostilbene-3,31-disulfonic acid and 4,4-diaminostilbene-2,21,66-tetrasulfonic acid. Likewise, the corresponding 4,4'-diaminostiblene carboxylic acids, such as 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid and 4, may be employed if desired. 4'-diaminostilbene-3,3'-dicarboxylic.

   Compounds prepared from carboxylic acids are somewhat less soluble in water than those prepared from disulfonic acid. However, since these shining agents are employed in relatively small proportions, their water-solubility property is often unimportant.

  It should also be understood that in addition to the acidic substituents, the stilbene radical may contain simple substituents such as the lower alkyl (i.e. methyl and ethyl) or lower alkoxy (i.e. ie methoxy and ethoxy), without exerting a detrimental influence on the properties of the fluorescent agents which they allow to obtain and these simple substituted stilbene compounds should be regarded as being the equivalents of the compounds of stilbene specially listed above.

   It is found that the new ethers of 4,4'-bis- (dioxybenzamido) stilbene disulfonic acids described above have advantageous fluorescent properties and emit a white or greenish-white fluorescence which makes them susceptible to numerous applications. plications as agents for making materials shiny and in particular textiles or the like treated by them.

   For example, it can be used to imprint

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 to make materials that are white in color, or printed, to make them brighter and they could be added to soaps or other detergents to make the cleaned material brighter, They can also be incorporated into the paper in the refining pile or as a treatment later to make the paper whiter and to use them advantageously in discharge printing, especially on rayon, as well as with plastics and other like applications.
