Process and device for the preparation of coals and the like by flotation and sedimentation.
The invention relates to a method and a device for the preparation of coals and the like by flotation and sedimentation.
In a known device for the preparation of charcoal by flotation and sedimentation, use is made of a separating vessel in the form of a funnel in which the liquid in permanent circulation is brought to determined aistances under the surface of the bath, so that an ascending current occurs at the upper part of the apparatus and a descending current at the lower part. The raw coal is discharged from top to bottom in the separator tank and removed laterally by an endless scraper.
In another known device, the separating vessel is provided at the lower part with a bucket chain for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the removal of precipitated material and at the top of an inclined loading plane for raw coal, as well as a discharge for washed coal float. Part of the dense liquid is entrained with the washed charcoal and is separated from the latter by a sieve. This is connected to a return pipe by means of which the dense liquid is returned by a centrifugal pump to the separator vessel, below the surface of the bath, so as to produce an upflow therein.
A further part of the dense liquid is sucked from the bucket chain through a pipe connected to the centrifugal pump and is also returned through the return pipe to the separator vessel, which also has the effect of producing a downdraft in the latter. .
The first mentioned method suffers from the disadvantage that solids whose density is about as high as that of the separating liquid collects therein and becomes obstructed. In addition, in this preparation system, it is essential that the surface of the bath be relatively large so as to channel all the elements of the raw coal the time necessary for the clean elements to rise and the unsuitable elements to descend.
The Second Mentioned process suffers from the disadvantage that waste rock and medium products are removed by the bucket chain. This is subjected to the inaction of the dense liquid, which causes corrosion and heavy wear.
The drawbacks mentioned are avoided according to the invention, by a device effecting the separation by flotation and sedimentation of coal or other minerals, by means of a suspension of solids and water (liquid ) this suspension circulating continuously from bottom to top in the separating tank and the latter being provided laterally, under the surface

the pipe h2 by the effect of the short-circuited pipe m, the: .iL- precipitated material is discharged in a positive manner from bottom to top, even if its density is considerably higher than that of the suspension constituting the liquid aense. The transport is therefore exclusively hydrodynamic. This also makes it possible to act on the large face of the flat pieces, so as to prevent them from remaining at the bottom as would happen if they presented their small face to the current of the liquid.
In order to prevent clogging of the sieve ± in the separator tank due to the possible presence of particles from abrasion, the sieve is arranged so that it does not completely close the opening d. but leaves an intervening space y, so that the particles can be discharged from the limited compartment below the sieve r.
Part of the wear particles may float in the vertical tube ± which is filled with clean water and the particles of the filler which are liable to remain in suspension accumulate there. Rising material or floating scum can be expelled or removed by suitable devices.
Air bubbles which are brought into the separator tank by the dense liquid introduced in a, are expelled by a plate v in the air discharge pipe w. Instead of this device, a short sheet can also be placed below the sieve r, the pipe w being;. Then connected immediately below the sheet to the separator tank.
According to the invention, a suspension or an unstable dense liquid is employed, preferably consisting of water and magnetite, because the magnetite then precipitates itself in the vertical tube b where the dense liquid is found at the state of the relative pos, so that immediately after commissioning during the operation one obtains clear water in this
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tube. Conversely, the separation of the dense liquid in the tank b is prevented by the updraft, under conditions such as to obtain at least above the inclined screen r a dense liquid (, the uniform density.
