  GALET A   ROULEMENT   A BILLES.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  BALL BEARING ROLLER.

   The present invention relates to improvements to ball-bearing rollers, in particular to such rollers used to guide and tension the chain in gear changes, for bicycles or similar vehicles, of the so-called "derailleur" type.

   In the most common use ball bearing rollers, the bearing surfaces of the balls are formed on the one hand by a cup formed in the base of the wheel rim, and on the other hand by an annular groove of the hub, groove which.is limited laterally by chamfers with which the sleeve and the nut which constitute this hub are respectively provided. The position of the balls is adjusted by screwing the nut onto the bush.

   Pebbles of this kind have serious drawbacks. In fact, the hub being fixed, and the pressure of the chain always taking place at the same place, the chamfers of the hub are subjected to a wear appreciably greater than that of the cup, the raceway of which is constantly moving. As soon as the play created by the wear appears, it is possible to take it up by screwing the nut, but the worn parts are then rotated with respect to each other and this results in hard point operation very defective which increases wear and quickly leads to the decommissioning of parts.

   In addition, the parts which make up the hub must be subjected to a heat-hardening treatment, generally by case-hardening, a treatment which, while it improves the behavior of the chamfers, on the other hand causes the brittleness of the thread of the sleeve, which often crumbles under the pressure exerted by the screw or bolt which makes the hub integral with its support.

   On the other hand, if, in order to be able to bring the chain closer to the wheel, in racing derailleurs with a large number of speeds for example, a roller with an offset rim is used, the bearing is subjected to dissipative forces.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 metric, which also accentuates the causes of wear of its staves.,
The present invention relates to a ball-bearing roller of the type specified above, in which the raceways of the balls on the hub consist of rings attached respectively to the sleeve and the nut which constitute the hub.

   According to one embodiment of the invention, the rings, preferably provided with frustoconical lateral surfaces, bear on the one hand laterally on conical cheeks of the sleeve and the nut, and on the other hand. , by their bore on a central extension of the nut.

   A solid assembly of great precision is thus produced which enables the roller to withstand the axial and radial forces exerted on it without fatigue, for example by a derailleur chain.

   The use of insert bearing rings makes it easy to replace the raceways as soon as, due to long wear, the operation of the roller has become defective.

   This arrangement also ensures a significant reduction in the cost price and the weight of the roller. In fact, only the rings which can be easily manufactured, for example by cutting with the press in a strip of quality steel. chosen, require heat treatment, and the rest of the hub can be made of a lighter and softer metal which allows higher turning speeds.

   According to a particular feature of the invention, the lightening of the roller is further accentuated by making grooves, openings or holes of all shapes in the veil of its rim which, without affecting the solidity, can also help improve the presentation of the pebble.

   It is easily possible to confer on rollers of known types at least part of the advantages inherent in the invention by providing in the bush and the nut of their hub bearing surfaces intended for the fitting of attached bearing rings and by providing their rim. grooves or lightening openings.

   According to another feature of the invention, in order to reduce to a minimum the distance which separates the roller from the driving wheel, instead of shifting the rim from the roller, the thickness of the cheek of the part of the hub located on the wheel is reduced. side of this wheel and the thickness of the other part is increased by a corresponding amount, so that the bearing is always located in the central plane of the rim.

   It is also possible to improve the mounting of the roller on its support by fixing it to the latter by a bolt or the like, the head of which is placed on the side of the driving wheel, the locking nut then being easily accessible from the outside. .

   The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing being, of course, part of said invention. .

   Figure 1 is a large-scale plan of a known type of roller.

   Fig. 2 is a partial section through II-II of fig 1.

   FIG 3 is a plan of a roller produced according to the invention.

   Fig. 4 is a partial section through IV-IV of FIG. 3.

   Fig. 8 is a partial axial section of an offset roller mounted according to the invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The roller of known type shown on the pins 1 and 2, comprises a hub formed by a sleeve 1 provided with a thread on which is screwed a nut 2, and a rim 3 mounted on this hub by means of balls 4 which roll on the one hand in a cup 5practiced in the widened base 3a of the rim 3 and on raceways, formed by annular chamfers 6 and 7 respectively provided on the sleeve 1 and the nut 2. The bearing adjustment is carried out by relative screwing of the sleeve 1 and the nut 2.

   This roller, used, for example, as a sliding or chain tensioner in a "derailleur" gear change, is mounted on its support by means of a bolt or the like passing through the central bore lb of the socket, so that its hub is fixed. The pressure of the chain, always being exerted substantially in the same place, causes localized wear of the chamfers of the fixed hub, wear which, in the long run, causes play in the components. The continuously moving cup 5 is subjected to much less uniform wear.

   It is possible to take up this play by screwing the nut 2, but, in doing so, the worn surfaces are offset with respect to one another and an asymmetry is introduced into the bearing from which impacts result. which rapidly increase wear and quickly lead to the decommissioning of components.

   On the other hand, the need to harden the bearing surfaces 6 and 7, by heat treatment, case-hardening for example, obliges the sleeve 1 and the nut 2 to be subjected to this treatment and causes the fragility of the thread which splits. - only under the pressure exerted by the bolt securing the roller on its support.

   The roller which is the subject of the invention, an embodiment of which is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, is free from these drawbacks.

   In fact, in this roller, the raceways intended for the balls 4 are formed by rings 8 and 9, preferably frustoconical, which bear laterally, respectively on cheeks 10 and 11 of the sleeve 1 and of the nut 2 The nut 2 is advantageously produced in the form of an internally threaded bush, comprising a cylindrical body 12 on which the rings 8 and 9 fit by their central bore 8a and 9a.

   A solid assembly of great precision is thus achieved thanks, on the one hand to the fitting of the rings 8 and 9 on the same part, namely the cylindrical body 12, and on the other hand to the fact that this extension of the nut 1 makes it possible to increase appreciably the number of threads engaged on the thread 1a, compared to what happens in the known rollers such as represented in FIGS. 1 and 2.

   This embodiment makes it possible to significantly lower the cost price, thanks to the ease of machining of the rolling rings which can be manufactured by cutting with the press a steel strip of the appropriate grade, rolled for example. in a crown which unwinds automatically as it passes in front of the cutting tool, preferably provided with multiple punches giving, for each press stroke, a corresponding number of high precision parts.

   In addition, the sleeve 1 and the nut 2, whose role is reduced to that of supporting the rings 8 and 9 can, also given the improvement in their assembly, be made of a low density metal which makes it possible to obtain both significant weight reduction and reduced machining time thanks to the high cutting speed permitted for bar turning. In addition, only the rings 8 and 9 need to be subjected to a hardening heat treatment, which decreases the number of calories necessary for the production of the roller and, therefore, the cost price.

   A full-size cycle derailleur roller assembly made in accordance with the invention weighs about five to ten grams less.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 than a similar roller of known type.

    @ The lightening of the roller can be further increased, without influencing the machining time, by working for example in the wall of the rim
3 a circular groove or groove 13 which practically reduces by more than half the thickness of the web of this rim in relation to the thickness of known rollers., This reduction in thickness can be seen by comparing the thicknesses a and a'des veils of the rims of the rollers shown in FIGS. 2 and 4. The thickness a '(figure 4) can be adopted for the walls of the bowl 5.

   However, it is advantageous to keep a thickness greater than the peripheral bead 3b, leaving it a sufficient truncated section to ensure its rigidity, while providing a good contact surface with the chain rollers and ensuring the normal maintenance of the roller between the links thereof. I. rim bead can be serrated, notched, or smooth.

   By using steel of suitable quality for the rim which can acquire the necessary strength by heat treatment, it is possible to make, with a press for example, in the bottom 13a of the groove 13, openings of any kind. , for example holes 14, numbers or letters constituting a mark, etc ... having an advertising character, and giving the roller a particular presentation advantageously distinguishing it from known rollers.

   It is thus possible for ordinary-size derailleur rollers to produce rims weighing about eight grams, while roller rims of known type weigh fifteen grams and more. This reduction in weight also has its repercussions on the heat treatment and contributes to lowering the cost price.

   According to an important feature of the invention, it is also possible to confer on a roller of the standard type as shown in Figures 1 and 2 some of the advantages inherent in the invention.

   To do this, it suffices to machine, in the sleeve 1 and the nut 2, seats 15 and 16 in which the sleeves 8 and 9 are placed, and, to lighten the rim, to make a groove 13 and holes or openings 14.

   Figures 5 and 6 show two embodiments of rollers thus modified. In FIG. 5, the annular rings 8 and 9 have parallel frustoconical lateral surfaces, while in FIG. 6 these rings have a substantially triangular section and perpendicular lateral and central bearing surfaces. It goes without saying that rings of the latter type could also be provided for the embodiment of the figures.
3 and 4.

   The rollers of Figures 5 and 6, although not having such a satisfactory assembly of the various members as the roller of Figures 3 and 4, are lighter and of longer operating life than the roller of the known primitive type.

   The embodiment of la.figure 7 relates to a roller with an offset rim provided with a hub according to the invention and fixed in a known manner on its support.

   The rim 17 of this roller, whose peripheral bead 17b is offset by the value ± with respect to the median plane X of the cup 5, is subjected on the part of the chain to oblique forces which introduce into the operation of the bearing, an asymmetry detrimental to the good performance of the components. This offset of the rim bead is due to the need to reduce, for derailleurs with a high number of gears, the minimum distance which separates the chain from the wheel.

   It is possible, according to the invention, to eliminate the offset of the rim relative to the cup 5, by reducing the thickness of the cheek of the sleeve 1 and by increasing that of the cheek of the nut 2 by a corresponding value. to ensure an offset towards the cycle wheel, bearings 10 and 11 and rings 8 and'9.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   This arrangement, shown in FIG. 8, makes it possible to eliminate the overhang exhibited by the rim of FIG. 7, while leaving the rolling track in the mean plane X of the roller.

   The applicant has noted :, that, in the usual derailleurs, the roller is fixed to its support 18 by means of a bolt 19, the nut 19a of which is placed on the side of the driving wheel, which makes difficult disassembly (fig. 7). In the embodiment shown in FIG. 8, the roller is made integral with the arm 20 and the internal support 18 by a bolt 21, the shouldered head 21a of which is fitted into the bore 18a of the support 18. The blocking s' carried out using a nut 22, easily accessible, in contact with the outer face of the arm 20o
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the roller which has just been described, in particular by substituting technical equivalents, without going beyond the scope of the invention.

   CLAIMS. A ball-bearing roller, more particularly intended to be used as a sliding gear or chain tensioner for a change of speed for cycles, of the so-called "derailleur" type characterized in that the ball rolling tracks on the hub are constituted by rings rapp ortées respectively on the sleeve and the nut which form this hub.
