<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

MACHINE FOR BORING THE CONNECTING RODS OF ENGINES AND THE LIKE.
It is known that it is necessary, after a certain working time, for organs whose surface is animated by a mutual movement in contact with other surfaces to be produced and this happens, more particularly, for connecting rods, especially those of internal combustion engines, for which the two housings, reserved respectively for the crank knob and the small end, must be rectified.
In the latter case, two problems arise, that of the distance which separates the axes of two housings and which must remain constant, so that the useful length of the connecting rod remains invariable, and that of the par 1- lelism which must remain between these two axes.
The machine, which is the subject of the invention, makes it possible to obtain these two results with the greatest possible precision. It is suitable, however, for other similar machining operations for which the same effects and results must be achieved.
The invention consists, mainly, in making the machines of the type in question comprise a frame with a fixed turret carrying a mandrel which supports the tools necessary for the various operations, said frame comprising longitudinal guides along which can be removed. - placed a carriage which in turn carries a second carriage, the position of which can be adjusted transversely with respect to the frame, and in which are formed at least two angular cavities or notches, in which is housed and immobilized, by locking means, the journal or axis of the connecting rod or the like, the axis of said cavities being parallel to that of the mandrel, while the first carriage pores a turret provided with means suitable for supporting and maintaining, with a adjustable way, the big end during work.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, a machine established according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 shows, in perspective, the upper part of an awl established according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows, in perspective, part of the longitudinal carriage of the machine.
Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively in elevation (parts in section) and in plan, the tool chuck of the machine.
Fig. 5 shows, on a larger scale, a section along line V-V of FIG. 3.
Figs. 6 and 7 show, respectively in side view and in horizontal section along the line VII-VII of FIG. 6, the transverse carriage of the boring machine.
Figs. 8 and 9 show, on a larger scale and respectively in longitudinal section and in elevation (parts in section), the members of the longitudinal carriage, shown in fig 2.
The machine shown comprises, on a frame 1, a fixed turret 2 in which is housed a suitable mechanism for rotating a shaft 3, connected by a conical coupling 4 to a mandrel 5 which carries the cutting tools 6. : Each of these tools (see also fig. 5) is integral with or is celé on a hollow and cylindrical shank 7 housed in a transverse cylindrical bore of the mandrel 5, being prevented from turning by means of a screw of blocking 8. The adjustment of the tool, with a view to varying the distance between its cutting tip and the axis of rotation of the mandrel 5, is obtained by rotating a threaded member 9, retained axially by a collar 10 provided on the internal face of its housing in the mandrel 5, this member being screwed into a threaded part of the cylindrical shank 7.
For the example shown, use is made of tools 6, one of which is used for roughing and the other for finishing.
The frame 1 comprises longitudinal guides 11, parallel to the axis of the mandrel 5 and along which can be moved a longitudinal carriage 12, the position of which is adjusted relative to the fixed turret 2 in a manner analogous to that adopted for advancing the carriage by one revolution.
On the carriage 12 are established transverse guides 13 along which 'can be moved, for example by means of a toothed wheel 14 and a rack with the intervention of suitable locking means, another carriage 15, called carriage transverse, the location of which relative to the longitudinal carriage 12 is determined using a mark 16 established on the carriage 12 and which cooperates with a graduated scale provided on the transverse carriage 15. The latter carries a block or upright 17 in which are formed two notches or angular notches 18, in the form of a wedge, the lateral and plane faces of which are suitably erect and are perfectly parallel to the axis of the tool-holder mandrel 5.
Above the upright 17 is established a jaw 19 provided with a locking screw or other similar member for clamping the axis or the journal of the connecting rod against the side faces of one or the other of the rods. notches 18, as clearly visible.
The longitudinal carriage 12 carries a support turret (figs.
8 and 9) which comprises a vertical base 20 mounted in a movable manner on the carriage 12, for example by means of a sleeve 21 run along a slot 22 of the plate of the carriage 12, so that the sleeve can be moved along the slot 22. In the base is housed a cylindrical member 25 in which is engaged a threaded rod 23 actuated by a crank 24. In the member 25 is formed a transverse bore which serves as a housing for an equi- mobile page comprising a cylindrical spindle 26 whose horizontal axis is substantially parallel to the guides 13. The spindle 26 can rotate around this axis to allow its adjustment.
The spindle 26 is biased towards the carriage 15 by a spring 26 'and can be retracted, in the axial direction, by means of a rack 27 and a pinion controlled by a lever 28 The spindle 26 carries, at its end, which is on the side of the block or upright 17, a cylindrical cross member 29 whose ends support two arms 30, in the form of a square, which can be moved at a reduced angle around
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the axis of the cross member for adjustment.
We see in fig. 6 that the connecting rod 31 is placed so that the journal 32 is in one of the notches 18 of the block or upright 17, being tight against the oblique faces thereof and held in place by the locking of the jaw 19. The location of the carriage 15 is adjusted so that the distance between the axis of the journal and that of the tool-holder mandrel 5 corresponds to the value desired for the center-to-center distance of the connecting rod, this distance possibly being. determined with the aid of the reference 16. The position of the angled arms 30 which act as a support for the other end of the connecting rod during operation is then adjusted.
The arrangement described, - above allows the greatest possibility of adapting the location of the two brackets, by the intervention of the cylindrical member 25, the spindle 26 and the cross member 29, given that these brackets must rest on parts of the connecting rod which are not rectified. The effect of the spring 26 'makes it possible to exert a constant and adjustable force on the head of the connecting rod.
The connecting rod being thus blocked, the longitudinal carriage 12 is moved towards the fixed turret to obtain the two passes with the tools 6, the locations of which have been adjusted beforehand with the aid of the threaded members 9. so as to obtain the desired diameter for the bore.
In the case of particularly large connecting rods which are too bulky to be able to be engaged in one or the other of the sizes 18 of the block or upright 17, or in the case of the diameter of the journal or of the axis 32 is too large for the largest of these notches, the connecting rod can be established laterally with respect to this upright, its journal being blocked or suitably immobilized with respect to the notches 18.
In this case, the base 20 is moved laterally on a slot 33 (fig. 2), made in the carriage 12 next to the slot 22 which normally serves for fixing the base 20.
As goes without saying and as it follows, moreover, already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application or to those of the embodiments of its various parts, ayanb more especially been indicated; on the contrary, it embraces some. all the variants.
