  PROCEDE DE PREPARATION D'ENGRAIS COMPOSES A PARTIR DE MASSES FONDUES
DE NITRATE D'AMMONIUM ET DE
PHOSPHATES.-

 EMI1.1
 la marque i'81itrophoskat',

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  PROCESS FOR PREPARING COMPOSITE FERTILIZERS FROM MELTED MASSES
OF AMMONIUM NITRATE AND
PHOSPHATES.-
The treatment of ammonium nitrate for its transformation into compound fertilizers is intended to reduce the danger of explosion of pure ammonium nitrate by the mixture of non-explosive substances; in addition, the salt must be brought to a state convenient for its use as a fertilizer (granulated state), and finally a fertilizer composed of several nutrients for plants, in a favorable ratio of quantities, has practical advantages for the plant. 'Agriculture.

   Such a granulated compound fertilizer consists, for example, of the known ammonium and calcium nitrate consisting of ammonium nitrate and powdered limestone, or the fertilizer prepared from ammonium nitrate with soluble potassium salts and phosphates and known as
 EMI1.1
 the i'81itrophoskat 'brand,
It has been found that a compound fertilizer based on ammonium nitrate can be prepared also with secondary or tertiary, water-insoluble phosphate fertilizers. basic action, more easily accessible, by incorporating them in a melted, concentrated ammonium nitrate.

   The secondary or tertiary phosphates, with basic action, to be incorporated into the ammonium nitrate melt, according to the present process, may, if necessary, also contain excess alkali, as is the case for example for the known "calcined phosphate" obtained by red calcination from crude phosphorite with sodium carbonate and other additives. The excess alkali must not, however, exist in such large quantities, or in such a state that the ammonium nitrate melt is decomposed to a significant extent with the evolution of ammonia, as is the case with example when crushed Thomas slag is mixed.

   It is already known, it is true, to produce compound fertilizers

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 containing ammonium nitrate by mixing, finely ground crude phosphates, dicalcium phosphate or tricalcium phosphate with ammonium nitrate, which is in the solid state, and granulating, if necessary. Contrary to this procedure, according to the present process, one works with molten ammonium nitrate, so that a complete homogenization is obtained, with advantages for the safety of transport and use. in the ground.

   In addition to the particular simplicity of the present process compared to the known state of the art, undesirable reactions with loss of ammonia are also avoided in the preparation, as occurs, for example, to an extent. notable, in the case of the mixture of the calcined phosphate, which can be used in a very particularly advantageous manner according to the present invention, with solid ammonium nitrate, to a notably increased degree in the case of the use of water for the granulation.

     It is stated as known in the technical literature that hot or cold fertilizer salts, for example calcium phosphate can be mixed by stirring water-containing ammonium nitrate melts. But this in no way reveals the surprising effect that one can mix basic, water-insoluble, secondary or tertiary phosphates with a concentrated melt of ammonium nitrate.

   While in the known compositions or mixing tables, for example, ammonium nitrate and calcined phosphate are indicated as not being miscible, in the process according to the present invention it does not occur when using concentrated melts of ammonium nitrate, despite the extremes of temperature and concentration, no undesirable decomposition or other harmful actions, but even a favorable action of the two components.

   The molten mixture prepared according to the present invention can then, in the usual manner in melts of ammonium nitrate, be brought by projection and cooling in the form of small grains or be divided in another way.

   As a component of the mixture containing phosphoric acid, in addition to the calcined phosphate, for example, it is also possible to use secondary calcium phosphate (precipitate). This product also reacts in a non-detrimental manner with the ammonium nitrate melt and, after cooling, shows no decrease in the proportion of citrate soluble phosphoric acid.

   The mixture of finely pulverized crude phosphate with a concentrated melt of ammonium nitrate, according to the present invention, also gives advantages.

   The mixing ratio of the ammonium nitrate melt to the phosphate component can, to a large extent, be tailored to the particular needs of the land to which the fertilizer is to be supplied.

  For example, to obtain a nutrient ratio of nitrogen to phosphoric acid equal to 1: 1, from a calcined phosphate, containing 24.7% citrate soluble phosphoric acid, and d an ammonium nitrate melt, containing 33.6% nitrogen, or a mixture of 109 parts of calcined phosphate and 80 parts of ammonium nitrate melt.

   In addition to the water-insoluble phosphates mentioned, it is of course also possible to add other plant nutrients, for example potassium salts, as well as active elements in trace amounts.

   The granulated products, obtained in either way, are completely stable, exhibit only minimal ammonia odor, and do not undergo deleterious changes when stored in moderately humid air.

  EXAMPLE: 80 parts of ammonium nitrate, containing 96% NH'No and 4% water (33.6% nitrogen), are heated to melting, and, with stirring

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   constantly add 109 parts thereof of finely pulverized calcined phosphate, 24.7% phosphoric diacid soluble in citrate and 1.8% phosphoric diacid insoluble in citrate. After sufficient mixing, the melt is sprayed in small drops, which are made solid by their fall through a layer of cold air.

   The finished product contains 14.80% nitrogen and 14.25% citrate soluble phosphoric acid, as well as 1.0% citrate insoluble phosphoric diacid.
