SEPARATEUR MAGNETIQUE A TAMBOUR.
<EMI ID=2.1>

2). Chacun de
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>

<EMI ID=11.1>

MAGNETIC DRUM SEPARATOR.
The present invention relates to a magnetic separator of the
drum type. These separators feature a non-magnetic rotating shell and a semi-circular fixed interior magnetic system. In known separators of this kind, the magnetic system which is carried by a
axis made of magnetic material has a number of poles, the pole pieces of which have teeth arranged in such a way that the teeth of two consecutive pieces interlock with each other, leaving between
they have a determined gap.
Such a separator has a certain number of drawbacks:
It has zones of maximum attraction corresponding to each pole piece, zones between which there are zones of lesser attraction corresponding to the toothing, this attraction being able to be sufficiently reduced to become ineffective.
If the distance between the pole pieces is not well dimensioned, there may even exist, at a certain distance from the envelope, zones of zero attraction.
The flux-emitting polar surface is always very large compared to the section of the core, which leads to incorrect use of ampere-turns.
The arrangement of the pole pieces prevents rational cooling of the windings.
The magnetic flux emitted by the two ends of the shaft of magnetic material can create disturbances.
The object of the present invention is to create a magnetic separator with a rotating envelope of the aforementioned genre making it possible to overcome the drawbacks indicated above.
To this end, the separator according to the invention is characterized by the following main points which may exist separately or in combination:
a) The magnetic system is arranged in such a way that, on the surface of the envelope, the lines of constant attraction are parallel to the generatrices of the envelope. b) The magnetic flux is produced by at least one magnetic circuit comprising a certain number of salient poles carried by a common central part of magnetic material and arranged radially, two consecutive poles in the direction of the circumference of the envelope being of opposite polarities .
c) Several identical magnetic circuits each comprising a certain number of salient poles of alternating polarities, carried by a common central part, are axially juxtaposed in such a way that the poles of the same polarity of the different circuits are aligned. d) The aligned poles of the same polarity of several magnetic circuits - <EMI ID = 1.1>
magnetic tiere.
e) The axis carrying the magnetic circuit (s) is made of non-magnetic material. f) The different magnetic circuits juxtaposed in the axial direction are magnetically isolated from each other.
g) Ventilation fins are provided on the flanges carrying the rotating casing, fixed screens being provided to direct the air circulated by the fins onto the pole coils.
h) The magnetic system is distributed over the entire periphery of the system and rotates in a direction opposite to the rotation of the envelope
i) A scraping member cooperates with the envelope.
j) The scraping member is rotary.
k) The scraping member is made of magnetic material.
The invention further comprises other characteristics which emerge both from the description which follows and from the appended drawing in which:
fig. 1 is a cross section of a separator according to the invention,
fig. 2 is a longitudinal section,
fig. 3 is an enlarged and schematic cross section of the aforesaid device,
fig. 4 is a very schematic view of a variant with a rotary magnetic system.
In the separator according to Figures 1 to 3, the products to be sorted magnetically are brought through a corridor or other 1 on the casing 2 of the separator. This rotating part has raised side edges 2a and

the 4 so as to allow the -rotation of the whole.
The magnetic system is carried by a pin 5 which, when not in use, for example for handling, is mounted loose in the

as we will see below.
The magnetic system consists of several individual magnetic circuits, each of which comprises a central piece of magnetic material.

on the shaft 5 by screws 11 or by any other suitable means, such as a key or the like.

that two consecutive poles in the peripheral direction have opposite polarities. In this way, each magnetic circuit carried by a central part 6 comprises a certain number of elementary circuits constituted by two adjacent poles and the part of the central part 6 associated with them.
A certain number of magnetic circuits of the kind which has just been described are juxtaposed in the axial direction (see fig. 2). Each of
<EMI ID = 6.1>
find aligned. The aligned poles of the same polarity are interconnected by strips 9a, 9b, etc ..., made of magnetic material, which are fixed to the poles by screws 10.
If necessary, for example in the case of fixing the central parts 6, 6 ', etc ... by keys, it is possible to provide spacers 12 between the individual central parts. According to one characteristic of the invention, these spacers are made of non-magnetic material
to prevent any interaction between the juxtaposed magnetic circuits.
Some lines of force passing from one pole to another have been shown schematically at 13. It should be noted that, thanks to the chosen arrangement, the lines of constant attraction on the envelope 2 are generators thereof. On the other hand, by progressing along the envelope 2 in the direction of the circumference, one crosses successively zones of opposite polarity, the attraction being variable within a zone of the same polarity, but .. without ever encountering a region of zero attraction.
The non-magnetic products fall naturally and can be picked up on lane 14 or the like, while the magnetic material retained by the attraction falls back to the rear towards 15.
As has already been said, the axis 5 carrying the pole masses can: be fixed or oscillate freely in its supports; the latter arrangement allows the pole masses to occupy during transport, for example, the lowest position. At the time of use, pole masses are brought into the position considered to be the most favorable and immobilized in this position by means of screws 5a.
The above splitter works as follows:
The products to be sorted are brought through the passage 1 on the casing 2 which rotates in the direction of the arrow 16. The magnetic particles are attracted by the magnetic system towards the inside of the casing 2 so as to remain pressed against the latter, while the magnetic particles roll freely on the surface of the envelope and are ejected by the discharge passage 14. It should be noted that, during the rotation of 1-'envelope 2, the magnetic particles pressed against the latter pass successively in front of poles of opposite polarity. In addition, the intensity of the attraction varies during the passage from one pole to another, without however becoming zero.
An intense stirring of the magnetic particles retained on the envelope is thus obtained, which prevents non-magnetic particles coated with magnetic particles from remaining retained therewith on the envelope, so that this constant stirring of the particles on the envelope is obtained. envelope ensures perfect separation.
<EMI ID = 7.1>
can provide gills 17 in the flanges 3 and equip them with fins
18 so as to cause air circulation through the internal part of the casing 2. The part of the section of the casing, which is not occupied by the magnetic system, is masked by screens 19 so that the cooling air is forced to lick the coils.
Fig. 4 shows another variant in which the magnetic system is also rotary. In this case, this magnetic system *, comprising <EMI ID = 8.1>

<EMI ID = 10.1>
In such an arrangement, we are obliged to positively remove
of the envelope 2 the magnetic particles retained thereon. In the example shown, and according to one characteristic of the invention, a
cylinder 22 of magnetic material, this cylinder comprising points, ridges
sharp or other contact with the surface of the casing 2, and turn
<EMI ID = 11.1>
The tips of cylinder 22 are induced when passing in front of each
pole piece in the opposite direction, causing the formation of a divergent field
facilitating elimination. On the other hand, the continual change of the magnetization of the tips 23 prevents the establishment of remanence effects.
The separator according to the invention has many advantages:
the particular configuration of its magnetic field thanks to which
lines of constant attraction are generators of the envelope, the polarity of these lines of constant attraction changing periodically without becoming zero, ensures a perfect separation. Magnetic independence
juxtaposed individual magnetic circuits, which is provided by the axis
in non-magnetic material, guarantees the desired configuration of the field by eliminating all unwanted leaks. In addition, the chosen configuration
ensures optimum use of ampere-turns. The particular construction of the magnetic circuits allows a very efficient ventilation of the coils.
The embodiment comprising a rotating magnetic system is also remarkable in that the eliminating cylinder ensures particularly intense mixing of the particles retained on the casing, which makes it possible to obtain
<EMI ID = 12.1>
Of course, the embodiments described above and shown in the drawings are given only by way of simple non-limiting examples and it is possible to modify in any suitable way, the shape,
the nature, arrangement and assembly of their elements without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus, the number of poles may be different from that
represented. In addition, in the case of an envelope of small width, it is possible
renounce the axial juxtaposition of several magnetic circuits.
