<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SHEET MATERIAL
The present invention relates to the manufacture of sheet material requiring the application of heat and pressure for its production and to an improved method and apparatus for the continuous production of a product. from a pulverized material, such as sawdust, or loose fibrous material, bonded with a plastic binder.
In British Patent No. 595,423 an apparatus for the production of sheet material from pulverized material and a plastic binder has been described, this apparatus comprising a pair of upper and lower endless conveyors disposed opposite. from each other and serving to apply pressure to the material to be treated, these conveyors being interconnected so as to form an endless chain of caterpillar-like pads, between which pads the heated material is subjected to a pressure as it is moved through the pressing zone.
Experience has shown that maintaining a uniform pressure over the entire length of the material undergoing treatment involves the use of considerable energy, which gives rise to increased wear and friction of the moving parts of the material. machine.
Even if only moderate pressure on the order of 200 to 300 English pounds per square inch is employed, conditions are created which do not contribute to smooth or smooth operation of the apparatus.
It has now been found that these drawbacks can be avoided by applying a high initial pressure to the material, prior to the application to this material of a sustained pressure in the pressing zone.
The present invention therefore relates to a process for the production of sheet materials from a pulverized material, such as sawdust, or from a loose fibrous material mixed with a plastic binder. , in which method the material is subjected, after heating, to a sustained pressure and to a heating - between two upper and lower conveyors, arranged opposite each other and serving to apply a pressure
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to the material in question, this process being characterized in that, prior to the application of the sustained pressure, the heated material is subjected to a high initial pressure or to high initial pressures, to such an extent that a sustained pressure relatively small is only necessary to maintain a uniform thickness of the material being processed,
which reduces the energy required to carry out the process and prevents the apparatus for carrying out this process from undue wear and friction.
The invention further relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method specified above.
In addition to making it possible to reduce the energy necessary for carrying out the process and to prevent the apparatus used for this purpose from undue wear and friction, the present invention makes it possible to considerably accelerate the production of material in. leaf.
According to one embodiment of the invention, after having calibrated the material to be molded until it has the desired thickness and after having heated it, a high initial pressure is momentarily applied to it (for approximately 5 seconds) applied by means of a roller or rollers, prior to the treatment of this material in the pressing zone. By exerting this high initial pressure, through the lubricated bearing of a roller, friction is greatly reduced during the subsequent sustained pressing stage.
The molding material exerts a greatly reduced pressure recovering part of its thickness, when the initial pressure ceases to be applied, so that a relatively low pressure, on the order of 1 to 60 English pounds per inch. square, is sufficient to maintain the degree of consolidation at the required value, during the treatment of sustained pressing in the pressing zone.
The difference between the pressure initially employed and that required to subsequently maintain the compression is more marked when the material is heated, either previously or by conduction from the hot pads, as shown by the data in the following table:

The increase or recovery of thickness, when the high initial pressure is released to a lower value, can, from these data, be controlled by a low sustained pressure,
such that the thickness recovery is low enough to achieve a panel of the desired uniform thickness.
During the period of application of the low sustained pressure, it is evident that the hardening or setting of the resinous binder is complete and therefore, when the panel finally leaves the pressing zone, only 'negligible recovery or increase in thickness.
It is obvious that the strong initial pressures mentioned above are only illustrative and that these strong initial pressures
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
can be on the order of 300 English pounds per square inch or more.
While it may be desirable for other reasons to consolidate the unheated layer of molding material under a roller or other device, before passing it to the pressing zone, a high pressure is, according to a particularity. of the invention, applied in the first part of the pressing zone, either by a heated roller or by a heated pad supported by a rolling device, and when the material has itself been sufficiently preheated by a heating treatment at high frequency.
The exact degree of compression and subsequent recovery is influenced by: a) the type of wood waste and its particle size; b) the moisture content of the material; c) the magnitude of the initial pressure and of the subsequent pressure; d) the duration of application of the initial high pressure and the subsequent low pressure; e) the temperature of the molding material before and after contact with the heated pad or roller, by which the high initial pressure is applied; f) the initial thickness of the layer of molding material.
According to a variant of the process, the momentary application of a high pressure is repeated in one or more stages, so that the desired degree of compacting is reached, before the application of the sustained low pressure and while the resinous binder is still in the uncured state.
The invention is particularly applicable to molding compositions consisting mainly of wood waste (shavings, shavings and sawdust) with a minor proportion (2 to 20% by weight) of resinous binder.
The composition may comprise a mixture of soft sawdust and a cresol-formaldehyde resin in the first condensation stage to a fine powder in an amount of 10 parts by weight of resin per 100 parts by weight of sawdust. Instead of solid resins, liquid resinous syrups can be used. The moisture (or solvent) content of the mixture should not exceed 10%, if the temperature required for curing or setting of the binder exceeds 100 C. Preferably, the moisture content should be between 5 and 8% in weight-. The conditions are chosen so that the final density (relative to water) of the product is between 0.5 and 1.4 and, preferably, between 0.7 and 1.0, when the main constituent of this product is wood waste.
The apparatus for carrying out the method may be similar to that described in the aforementioned British patent and comprising one or more rolling members mounted above the lower conveyor, with a view to exerting the initial high pressure or pressures on the supports. stationary or bed, on which the rolling member slides in the low pressure zone. Electric heaters can be inserted into the chain components.
According to a variant of the apparatus, the material can be supported by a flexible, mobile and endless steel band, an upper band, similar to the band mentioned in the first place and cooperating with the latter constituting the pressure zone. sustained. The preheated material passes between these bands, which receive a strong initial pressure from heated rollers arranged opposite one another.
Beyond the rollers used to apply the high initial pressure, heated supports have been provided for the upper and lower belts, which can be placed at a desired distance from each other, so
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to ensure the desired thickness of the sheet material. Instead of fixed adjustable heated supports, a number of small heated and adjustable rollers can be provided.
In the accompanying drawings: - Figure 1 shows schematically an elevational view of an apparatus similar to that described in British Patent No. 595,423, but modified so as to allow the application, according to the invention, of the strong initial pressure at the mixture of pulverized material and plastic binder; - Figure 2 is a schematic elevational view of a modified form of apparatus, in which endless steel bands are employed, instead of conveyors in the form of an endless chain with skids, and - Figure 3 is an elevational view of a modified form of the arrangement shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 1 a denotes a hopper from which the mixture of pulverized material and plastic binder is fed to the lower conveyor b, consisting of a number of pads, as described in British Patent No. 595,423. If desired, the mixture may be supported by a layer of paper, held onto the finished sheet material, and fed onto the conveyor b from a roll d The mixture whether or not placed on a paper backing is preheated, for example, by means of high-frequency heating devices e, prior to its passage under the roller, which serves for the application of the high initial pressure and can be heated internally by the passage of a heating liquid or vapor.
It goes without saying that the roller f can also be heated with gas or electricity. The height of the roller F is adjustable, so that the strong initial pressure can be applied, as required, to the material placed on the conveyor b, which is supported by a seat g. An endless belt i is interposed between the roller f and the material being processed, a similar belt being provided on the conveyor belt b.
When the initial strong pressure has been applied, the compressed and partially cured sheet product passes into the sustained pressure zone, where such pressure is applied by means of an upper conveyor h, made of pads like the lower conveyor, but operating. between the side plates ¯ of the lower conveyor b.
The apparatus shown schematically in Figure-2 comprises upper and lower endless conveyor belts i and j made of steel or other heat-resistant material, onto which the mixture of pulverized material and plastic binder is fed, members -lateral k being provided on each side of the lower conveyor so as to prevent the material under treatment from spreading beyond the edges of the conveyor.
The strong initial pressure is applied to the material by means of heated rollers !!! and 1 placed opposite each other, the material having previously been subjected to heating using the heating devices e After passing between the rolls m and 1, the material passes between heated supports adjustable n, constituting the sustained pressure zone.
In FIG. 3, instead of the heated and adjustable supports n, one employs, in the sustained pressure zone, a certain number of adjacent rollers o, heated, adjustable and placed opposite one another.
As in the aforementioned patent, care can be taken to coat the sheet material on one or both sides with paper or a similar coating layer.
It goes without saying that the initial strong pressure can be applied in one or more stages, so that the desired degree of compactness of the material is achieved before the application of the sustained pressure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It is also evident that the process according to the present invention is not limited to the use of a single roll or of several rolls as the means for applying the high initial pressure. It is also possible to apply this strong initial pressure in the device, by means of which the application of a continuous pressure is made, for example, by adjusting the throttle between the advancing end of the members. carriers, arranged opposite one another or by providing, at the location of this constriction, means suitable for ensuring the application of a strong initial pressure, the carrier members forming, by cooperating the one with the other, the area of application of less sustained pressure.
