SYSTEME n'ALIMENTATION A COURANT CONTINU.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

CONTINUOUS CURRENT POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM.
The present invention relates in general to electric current supply systems, and in particular relates to an electronic direct current supply.
Electronic power supply systems offer many advantages over rotary type power systems.
First, they are lighter and less bulky for the same power. Second, they are mechanically simple. Finally, their manufacture is very economical, because one can arrange to use tubes, transformers and other standard elements.
The invention is shown in one application form of direct current power from a three-phase alternating current source. These devices are commonly used in airplanes which are provided with three-phase current at 400 cycles under 208 volts. An airplane carries many devices, for example various types of servo motors for controlling the airplane, or for controlling shooting devices, requiring a DC power supply.
An electronic power supply of the type described below is ideally suited for such installations because of its small size, lightness and ease of maintenance.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a direct current power supply system of a simple construction, relatively light for its power and small in size.
It also aims to provide a DC power supply system in which the output voltage remains constant over a determined range of load and network voltage variations.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 schematically shows a direct current power supply system in accordance with the principles of the invention; and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Figure 2 graphically shows the operation of the power supply of Figure 1.
In figure 1, the three-phase alternating current supply which is to be transformed into direct current is connected to the three conductors L1, L2 and L3 which in turn supply the primary P connected in tri-angle of a three-phase transformer carrying the general reference T. The transformer T has a secondary winding connected in star and bearing the reference S.
Tubes T1, T2 and T3 ensure single-phase rectification of each phase of the three-phase device. These tubes are of the gas type, thyratron, and are controlled by means of grids G1, G2 and G3. The plate voltage of each of the tubes is supplied by the respective secondary windings S1, S and S3 of the transformer T. These windings are inserted into the supply circuits of the thyratron tubes, between the plate and the cathode, comprising an inductor L and a capacitor C1 in series in a part common to the three circuits, the circuit between the cathode circuit 10 and the earth forming the output circuit of the tubes. The grids of the respective tubes are controlled by means of separate secondary windings of the transformer T.
These windings bear the respective references A, B and C, and correspond respectively to phases 1, 2 and 3 of the set of secondary windings. The secondary winding A is connected to the terminals of the filament of the tube T2 supplied, as will be noticed, by the secondary winding S2 and the secondary winding A is also connected to the grid G2 by the grid resistor R .
The secondary winding B is connected to the terminals of the filament of the tube T3 and is connected to the grid G3 of this tube by means of the grid resistor R3, while the secondary winding C is connected to the terminals of the filament of the tube Tl and to the grid G1 of the same tube by means of a grid resistor R1. It can be seen that the grid circuits of the various tubes are controlled by voltages out of phase by 120 electrical degrees with respect to the plate voltages of the same tubes, and by suitably combining the instantaneous polarities of the windings which control the grid voltages with respect to. at the plate supply windings, it is possible to obtain a gate voltage which lags practically 60 on the plate voltage.
This arrangement is shown in FIG. 2 in which the plate voltage bears the reference PV and the corresponding gate control voltage the reference CV. This characteristic curve applies to each of the three tubes shown.
In order for the output voltage to remain relatively constant despite variations in the load current of the device, a derivative control voltage ER, which is a function of the variation in the output voltage of the power supply, is applied, such as an additional bias to the gates. respective tubes. This voltage is produced by a bias circuit to be described later and is applied between the grid and the cathode of the respective thyratron tubes.
The sensitivity of the power supply to the output voltage is ensured by means of a triode T4 connected in series with a resistor R5 and a voltage regulator tube VR between the conductor 10 and the earth. The voltage regulator tube VR is of a type which tends to maintain one at its terminals. constant voltage despite current variations within specified limits, and therefore provides a reference voltage for the device. The gate 11 of the triode T4 is controlled as a function of the output voltage. This is obtained by means of a potentiometer P7 inserted between the conductor 10 and the earth. The voltage drop across this potentiometer therefore varies with the output voltage which, in turn, rises and falls as the load current decreases or increases.
A tap of the potentiometer P7 is connected to the gate 11 by a resistor R4 and capacitors C5 and C6 are placed in shunt on the two parts of the potentiometer P7. The capacitors C5 and C6 form elements of an anti-runaway circuit applying
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
voltages to the gate driver as a function of the rate of change in the output voltage. Devices are provided to operate the voltage regulator tube VR between the current limits where its voltage remains practically constant, by means of a resistor R6 in parallel with the control resistor of the gate R5 and the grid. triode T4 and used to maintain a higher base current in VR.
The voltage ER, as has been said, is applied between the gates and the cathodes of the respective thyratron tubes T1, T2 and T3 in order to negatively polarize the gates. As shown in Figure 2, this voltage constitutes the axis of the AC gate control voltage CV. The characteristic curve of each of the triodes is represented by the curve in dotted lines GC. This curves under the PV plate voltage axis and is located between the PV plate voltage axis and the ER bias voltage. The grid control voltage GV, by its axis, lags about 60 on the PV plate voltage. The point F where the control voltage CV intersects the GC characteristic curve of the respective thyratron tubes, denotes the ignition point of the tube.
Note that for the particular ER gate bias shown in Figure 2, the actual ignition point lags on the plate voltage curve by an amount between 60 and 90, and the exact ignition point is determined. by the value of the grill bias voltage ER. Once the thyratron tubes are turned on by the gate drive voltage, they continue to conduct until the plate voltage drops to zero. This condition is represented by the hatched portion under the PV plate voltage curve, the area of which represents the electrical energy delivered by any of the tubes for the condition indicated.
The thyratron gate control voltage ER is made up of two components, one being the voltage across resistor R5 which negatively polarizes the thyratron gates and the other being the voltage across resistor Rg which polarizes them. grids of thyratrons positively. For the moment, the voltage across the resistor Rg can be considered as a simple battery voltage. For the condition shown in Figure 2, the voltage across resistor R5 is the greater of these two opposing voltages. Therefore, the resulting voltage ER negatively polarizes the gates of the thyratrons.
The introduction of a bias voltage such as that across resistor Rg is interesting because it necessarily increases the level of the current in the series circuit comprising resistor R5 and triode T4. In doing so, the tube T4 works in the rectilinear part of its curve between the limits determined by the maximum and minimum values of ER necessary to ensure good regulation of the output voltage to the conductor 10.
The resistor R8 is inserted into the plate circuit of a tube T5 supplied by means of a secondary winding D forming part of the group of secondaries of the transformer T comprising the windings Si and A. It will be noted that this winding can be mounted on n ' any of the transformer cores. The voltage across resistor R8 can be considered constant except for variations from the alternating current source. As the current flowing in the circuit which contains R5 must be high enough to produce across it the required voltage drop, the relative values of the voltages across R5 and R8 and the circuit constants of the elements associated with this command of polarization are chosen so as to produce the necessary current.
The capacitors C3 shunted on resistor Rg and C2 shunted on resistor R5, filter the AC component of the thyratron gate circuits so that the frequency of the AC component is minimized in the thyratron gate circuits.
With the device described above, a decrease in the load current in the output circuit of the power supply causes an increase in the voltage across the output circuit. This increase in voltage causes an increase in the voltage at grid II of tube T4. It follows that the tube T4 is traversed by a higher current giving a chu-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
te higher voltage across the gate control resistor R5. As the negative terminal of resistor R5 is connected by resistor R8 to the gate of each of the tubes T1 T2 and T3, a higher negative bias voltage ER is applied to the gates of the thyratrons.
Looking at FIG. 2, it can be seen that this results in a descent of the axis of the gate control voltage CV. The CV curve will therefore intersect the GC characteristic curve of thyratron tubes at a later point in the cycle shown, which decreases the energy delivered by the power supply and drops the output voltage to a value very close to strong of that determined by regulation. If there is an increase in load current, the resulting decrease in output voltage causes the gate voltage of triode T4 to decrease. Decreasing the current in R5 tends to reduce the negative bias voltage ER.
FIG. 2 shows that there follows a rise in the gate control curve CV which intersects the characteristic curve GC at a point preceding point F in the figure. This increases the energy delivered by the power supply until the output voltage reaches the desired voltage.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described, it will be appreciated that numerous modifications of detail can be made therein without departing from the spirit and without departing from the scope of the invention.
In addition, it will be appreciated that the present invention can be applied to the single-plate rectification of single-phase AC circuits in which case a single thyratron tube is sufficient. In such an application the plate voltage can be supplied by means of a secondary winding of a single phase transformer, the gate voltage being applied by means of a second secondary winding of the same transformer via a device. Conventional phaser which will establish the correct phase relation between the PV plate voltage and the CV gate control voltage.
