Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    REVENDICATIONS.

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

  PROCESS AND MACHINE FOR RELIEF PRINTING OF PLASTICS,
The increasingly widespread use of sheet plastics, and more particularly among the latter of synthetic or natural resins and rubber and especially vinyl resins, has prompted manufacturers to strive to give sheets the appearance of certain raw materials of natural origin which they are called upon to replace. Thus it has been proposed, in order to give these sheets the appearance of leather, to subject them to the pasty state, to a "graining" by passing between two cylinders, one of which is engraved. so as to reproduce the grain of the leather on the surface of the sheet.

   The engraving of these cylinders, which can only be carried out by very specialized artists, constitutes a long and very expensive operation, so there can be no question of generally using this process to give the plastic material the visual appearance of all the raw materials that are usually used in sheathing, carpet series, furniture, saddlery and others, such as fabrics of all kinds, leather, embossed paper, and the tactile sensation they provide.,
The object of the present invention is a process which makes it possible to obtain this result under conditions which are sufficiently economical to allow its industrialization.

   The method according to the invention consists in bringing the plastic material in the pasty state under suitable pressure and temperature into contact with one side of a fragment of the material which it is desired to obtain the appearance, this material being previously subjected to a primer. whose role is to make it more resistant and to prevent the adhesion of the plastic material and this material.

   According to a first embodiment of the invention, the previously prepared material to be reproduced, which itself plays the role of a matrix or cliché, is brought into contact directly with the plastic material. In this case, either ordinary textile fabrics or woven fabrics can be used.

   The preparation of these materials has a dual purpose. First of all, a textile fabric is generally too flexible by itself and too weak to be used as it is. The sizing therefore has the effect of strengthening this fabric, ie of giving it increased rigidity and of keeping the fabric in contact with the plastic material under the pressure which is applied to it; on the other hand, the plastic material runs the risk of adhering to the material the weft of which it is sought to reproduce and the primer aims to play a non-stick role between these two materials.

   As a finishing material, it is possible to use either conventional finishes, such as starch, or natural or artificial varnishes such as silicones or vinyl varnishes (vinyl alcohols) used alone or mixed with a metallic powder such as than aluminum, or proceed with the metallization of the weft lending material.

   According to a second embodiment of the invention, a prior printing of the material to be reproduced is carried out on a sheet of plastic material with a higher melting point than that of the plastic material on which it is intended to operate. final impression. In this case, the material with a high melting point previously impressed is secondary for all the other subsequent prints, which avoids damaging the material to be reproduced since it is only used once.

   In the latter case, it will be advantageous to interpose, between the secondary plastic matrix and the sheet to be printed, an anti-adhesive or lubricant means acting as the primer used in the first embodiment. This means can consist of a salt or a fatty acid or a metallizing layer.

   The secondary matrix can moreover be made of materials other than a plastic material with a higher melting point, for example rubber, thermoplastic material (film) or even metal.

   In either form, the process according to the invention is applicable to a sheet of plastics material, either during polymerization or after polymerization. In the latter case, the plastic film is softened either with a solvent or under the action of a suitable temperature. The plastic web and the die are then subjected to heat and pressure for a shorter time so that there is less risk of damage to the fabric and its finish.

   For the practical implementation of the process, the plastic material on which the printing is to be carried out can, on the other hand, be treated alone, or resting on a support usually formed by a strip of textile or paper.

   It will be noted that the process makes it possible to print the desired design on both sides of the plastic strip, simultaneously using two dies placed on either side.

   It is also possible either to pass the matrix and plastic strips between smooth plates, for example of glass, subjected to a suitable pressure, or preferably to guide them by rollers along a table or around it. a cylinder partially or entirely heated to a suitable temperature.

   The appended drawing represents schematically and only by way of example a machine for carrying out the invention in the case of a plastic material made integral with a textile support by softening and heating and treated between rollers. .

   In the drawing, there is shown at 1 the strip used as a support, unwinding from a reel 2, passing over two drums 3 and 4 finally wound up on a reel 5. The plastic material flowing from 'a reservoir 6 is deposited at 7 on the strip 1 on which it is leveled by a scraper 8 when it has reached the desired consistency obtained by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 a heating table 9 interposed between the drums 3 and 4. The drums 3 and 4 are driven by a rotational movement in the direction indicated by arrows 10 and 10 'so that the textile support strip 1 drives the plastic material to the above the heating table 9 in the direction of the arrow 10 ".

    @
The heating table 9 stops a little before the roller 4 so that when the textile strip supporting the plastic material arrives at this roller, this plastic material is polymerized. It is at this point that the imprint of the strip 11 forming a matrix of the cliché is applied. This strip 11 unwinds from a reel 12, then passes over a drum 13 which rests it on the drum 4, then on a second drum 14 before being wound up on the reel 15.

   It is therefore, when, supported by the textile strip 1 and starting to solidify., The plastic material passes between the drums 4 and 13, that it receives the imprint of the strip 11. It then winds up. with band 1 around drum 5
The device shown therefore makes it possible to obtain, on a plastic strip of any length (limited here only by the length of the support strip 1), a design which can vary throughout its length; it suffices for this purpose that the strip 11 itself has a variable pattern. It would also be possible to use a continuous printing tape, that is to say rolled up on four rollers 12, 13, 14 and 15, the pattern then repeating periodically on the plastic material.

   Of course, the example, which is intended only to illustrate one of the embodiments of the invention, is in no way limiting and it is perfectly understood that numerous variants can be made to it without departing from the scope. framework of the invention. '
Thanks to the method according to the invention, it is possible to produce sheets of plastic materials with or without a support presenting, both to the sight and to the touch, the appearance of the real material envisaged and in the case where this real material is fragile and expensive like satin or moire, this sheet is much more resistant to wear and can be cleaned almost instantly.

   The field of application of the invention is practically unlimited since, even in the case of a real fragile material, this material can be subjected to a single treatment involving only a small quantity of material. Thus the products according to the invention are capable of receiving a very large number of applications in the clothing, furniture, bodywork, packaging, tiling, coating, etc. industry.
